Dab editing

Hi! I don't think i've noticed your edits before, and before opening discussion w/ you of TO, i wanted to inform myself a bit about your Dab-editing experience, which already clearly includes some good work. I think you missed some substantial Dab and MoSDab considerations at Kundalini, so i'm going work on at least that one before leaving you a longer note -- and want to avoid any possibility you'd think "That SOB is out taking revenge for TO without even facing me!" If you'd like to communicate before i get around to msging you again, i won't feel interrupted, and i'll be monitoring yr talk page so that you can respond to me below in this same talk section in order to keep both ends of it together. Thanks,
--Jerzyt 00:25, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

Thanks Jerzy! I had never looked at the MoSDab page before, rather I'd just intuited Dab formats with a few years of practice. Your reformatting of the TOC to the right was a good example outlined in this part MoSDab, which also highlighted the Aurora page as an example for long-list organizing. The disambiguation dos and don'ts page is also a handy guide. I think I handled most of TO correctly. I'll go back and look at it again.
Please feel free to have at Kundalini (disambiguation). It's oddly remained untouched considering that some of the pages that it links to have been a bit contentious. Morganfitzp (talk) 00:48, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

You also said, on my talk:

==Re-Dabbing Kundalini==

Hi Jerzy. I see that you're currently working on the various Kundalini pages. Some background on the term and its uses:

  • Kundalini energy is a yogic principle connected to the chakras and the central nadi (energy channel). It's a yogic theory of unlocking energy from the base of the spine and sending it upward toward the crown of the head and beyond. It is central to both physical and philosophical aspects of many forms of yoga.
  • Kundalini Yoga is a modern school of yoga that highlights the notion of kundalini energy. Hence the article previously titled "Kundalini" referred to kundalini energy.
  • It makes sense for the Dab page to just be the straight "Kundalini" and rename the energy page "Kundalini energy". Kundalini Yoga can remain where it is because it apecifies a partical style of yoga (cf: Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, Anusara Yoga, etc.) Morganfitzp (talk) 01:52, 12 September 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, i wasn't watching your talk page closely enuf.
  1. I screwed it up and am trying to track down where the energy-article content went. Not to worry, i either overwrote or deleted it, and i can fix either.
  2. If you convince me i'm wrong about a primary-topic i'll put it back.
Back to you quick as i can.
--Jerzyt 02:01, 12 September 2013 (UTC)
There is no wrong, these things are all subjective. Full disclosure: I am a yoga teacher. Morganfitzp (talk) 02:05, 12 September 2013 (UTC)
! I had decided, about half an hour ago, to say this to you:
They say everything can be replaced,
They say every distance is not near.
--Jerzyt 02:14, 12 September 2013 (UTC)
Due attention to IAR notwithstanding, the guideline seems aimed at minimizing the total fuss experienced by the mass of individual users who actually type "Kundalini" in the wiki-search window, and lacking a means of measuring that, we've prescribed a test: google to find the number of pages on the Web that mention "kundalini" and the number that mention it in a context that implies whatever sense you are claiming is the primary sense. I hadn't intended to make such a test, but it can be a quick enuf one for the level of effort that i'm willing to devote to the matter:
"About 7,860,000 results" for <<kundalini>>,
"About 4,480,000 results" for <<kundalini yoga>>, and
"About 2,590,000 results" for <<"kundalini yoga">>.
Total mentioning "kundalini" 7.8M,
mentioning both but not the phrase 1.9M,
mentioning "kundalini" but not "yoga" 3.4M,
mentioning the phrase 2.6M.
For me the interesting group is the 1.9, showing (unsurprisingly) discussion of both concepts, yet (for me more surprising) on each of those pages, no need to use the phrase even once. Others more dedicated than i might come with a more enlightening analysis, but i don't think either of our former expectations is adequately supported, which is reason IMO for me to admit error and for the "equal Dab'n" default case to be applied, as i think you just said would suit you too.
--Jerzyt 06:01, 12 September 2013 (UTC)
Is seems quite clear to me that your Google search has confirmed that "Kundalini" is the primary topic. The creation of a disambiguation page is being challenged and it should be reverted (I would do it myself but need administrator privileges). Please respect the opinions of 3 editors (including myself) on the talk page. There are some valid and clear arguments in favour of "Kundalini" as the primary topic. Firstly though, as I have been saying - the creation of the disambiguation page needs to be undone by Jerzy as a matter of urgency as per the bold revert discuss guideline. Change it back to how it was and then let's discuss it. Freelion (talk) 11:48, 20 October 2013 (UTC)
M, i'm not sure i've followed everything you've had to say about the Kundalini dispute, but i've stopped responding to FL abt it, and i don't expect to pay attention to any further discussion on it. I find you an exemplar as a WP colleague, & hope you won't be inconvenienced by that change; if you should be so, i would welcome discussion with you about how i might be helpful to you in that regard, and i look forward to working with you as occasion arises in the the future. Thanks.
--Jerzyt 01:32, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks Jerzy. Take it easy. Morganfitzp (talk) 02:44, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

To

OK, i think i know better who i'm talking to.
You may have noticed that i added To in the course of a more general cleanup of TO; in an excess of thoro-ness i searched something like

to infinitive

against the chance that there was a relevant article, and was surprised to find that the infinitive and the preposition happened to be discussed together (i.e., in the same article, tho as two only superficially related subtopics) at grammatical particle, and decided that it wouldn't hurt to have an entry for any user who hoped against hope for an article on any of the English words spelled t-o. You recast it (calling them one word, despite preposition and article being different parts of speech, but never mind), and promoted the entry to an approximation of WP:primary topic which requires that to (disambiguation) be the page for the disambiguation, and that to redirect to grammatical particle. I'm pretty sure the G-test would show most uses of "to" are as one or the other of the two particles, but WP:NAD and it sure feels like the guidelines falling into madness.
I'd like to stop feeling sorry i ever thot of the possibility of entries (or an entry, as it turned out) for those two particles, and to have at least your lack of active interest if i delete the entry for the particles and restore equal disambiguation.
(That would also at least postpone, BTW, the need for you to absorb WP:DabRL -- actually not so much the guideline as the design considerations that underlie it. The "zero-order approximation" is "a Dab is different in almost every way from an article".)
I trust you'll understand that any stridency in my tone reflects, if anything, annoyance with myself rather than with you; i'm certainly giving it too much power.
--Jerzyt 20:23, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

Hey Jerzy. Don't lose to [sic] much sleep over it. Main thing is when someone searches for "to", that search should make all of the relevant meanings of that little word or acronym available. First and foremost, to as a grammatical particle, clearly as a preposition ("I've been to the mountaintop."—MLK) and as an auxiliary to infinitive verbs ("To be, or not to be."—Shakespeare). Two ways to go here:
  • If said search goes to a Dab page, then these grammatical particles are at the top and all other relevant uses appear below, as was the case last I looked.
  • If the search redirects someone to grammatical particle, then that search should also yield, "To redirects here. For other uses, see TO (disambiguation)."

Given the complexity of this simple little word, I think the first option works fine, gets users to what they're looking for in a manner that's succinct and easy to decipher. Morganfitzp (talk) 01:03, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

Question

I see you list yourself as a yoga instructor on your user page. What kind of yoga do you teach? Gatoclass (talk) 11:58, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

I teach hatha yoga. Morganfitzp (talk) 02:55, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
So you have no involvement with kundalini yoga at all? Do you have any connection to Yogi Bhajan and his teachings? Gatoclass (talk) 06:49, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
Ah, I see where you're headed with your question. My study and expertise of yoga is wide. With regards to kundalini, I've studied the energy principle via many teachers in the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, Anusara Yoga, Forrest Yoga and yes, the Kundalini Yoga schools. While I bring some of Kundalini Yoga's kriyas into my own teaching and practice, I am not a Kundalini Yoga teacher. I have no relationship to Yogi Bhajan or 3HO other than knowing some other yoga teachers who happen to teach Kundalini Yoga, just as I know and have studied with people trained in Sivananda Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Integral Yoga, Kripalu Yoga, etc. My role as a Wikipedian is to keep it NPOV and contribute to articles in which I have expertise, including music, performance studies, film, games, and yoga. Morganfitzp (talk) 15:48, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
Okay, thank you for that comprehensive response - I just wanted some reassurance that the person I am dealing with has a truly independent POV before taking the kundalini yoga discussion further. I'd like to think you could answer some questions I have regarding this topic area - certainly it could use some input from knowledgeable and independent contributors. I have no time to elaborate ATM however, so hopefully we can continue this discussion tomorrow. Gatoclass (talk) 17:05, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. There have been a lot of editing wars on the kundalini articles, seemingly between adherents to and opponents of said practice(s). I'm neither. Morganfitzp (talk) 02:27, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Cumbia

Greetings! Please don't add unreferenced material, or material that has failed to verify back to the article. I checked the source one by one, and even tagged them before the removal. The sources did not even mention by word what was written to the article. Cheers! Jayaguru-Shishya (talk) 19:32, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

Hi Jayaguru-Shishya. I was pretty thorough about checking my references after your deletions. Hernandez's chapter on Cumbia has a lot, as does the radio piece produced by Alt Latino, and the scholarly work on etymology was very much pared down from source material. Cumbia is a vast musical genre spanning two centuries and two continents (four continents if you trace its roots back to Africa and follow its branches over to Europe). I hope that you'll do more to help reflect that in the article by expanding it, not just policing it. Thanks! Morganfitzp (talk) 20:26, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

Per the discussion at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Albums/Archive_46#Piero_Scaruffi_-_Final_Verdict_on_using_him_as_a_source_in_reviews there's a very clear consensus here that Scaruffi is not to be used as a source in music/album articles in any capacity. So please, do not add his opinions anymore. It is a wp:self published source. Since this is a long running dispute, any contributor warned by the situation and who doesn't respect it, would encounter sanctions and could be blocked from editing. Thanks. You've been informed because you used this source here. Woovee (talk) 13:45, 1 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi Woovee. I do hope that you are assuming good faith in that I was unaware of the discussions around Mr. Scaruffi and his ill repute. Thank you for removing the invalid source material that, in my naïveté, I used to reference biographical information. The recent edits I'd made to the page in question were rollbacks to edits made by the subject of the page in violation of Wikipedia:Autobiography. As an editor, I am not in the habit of confronting others who violate such policies with warnings of potential sanctions and blocks to editing. Perhaps you'd like to drop that editor a note yourself. Deletion discussion about Panoply Media

Hello, Morganfitzp,

I wanted to let you know that there's a discussion about whether Panoply Media should be deleted. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Panoply Media .

If you're new to the process, articles for deletion is a group discussion (not a vote!) that usually lasts seven days. If you need it, there is a guide on how to contribute. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

Thanks,

Chris Troutman (talk) 06:33, 5 February 2017 (UTC)

Thanks Chris Troutman. I created the page as a redirect to Slate. Other editors went ahead and turned it into a poorly sourced stub. Rather than delete it, we could just re-redirect it back to Slate until someone has the gumption to do the harder work of making a proper article. Morganfitzp (talk) 18:08, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
Obviously the above message I left is the pro forma notification that Twinkle creates when I send something to AfD. Very seldom do I not send these notifications even though I realize your work isn't what the article currently represents. I am a New Page Patroller which is how I found this article and very often I do revert back to the redirect. I didn't in this case because I suspect my edit would simply be reverted and AfD is the best way to form a community consensus. To that end, you would do well to understand that NPP is triage; I am not in the habit of improving every sad article I find. Your belief that I should evinces a sort of inclusionism with which I do not agree. I am curious to know why you created a redirect in the first case. I've noticed this editing behavior before from other Wikipedians and I don't understand the motivation to do so. Making articles seems more intuitive. Chris Troutman (talk) 18:21, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
Hey Chris Troutman. I wasn't implying that you should improve the article, just that anyone wants the article to stick around could invest in it. Clearly some editors thought it worthy of being more than just a redirect page, and they started that work but not to a satisfactory level. It could be beefed up, or folded into the Slate article, and I found some refs that could help someone else make that call. As for me, I think I'll give it a rest and let a few other editors weigh in. Thanks! Morganfitzp (talk) 18:09, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
