New to wikipedia (as contributor)

Hi SarahStierch. Thank you for taking the time to look at the recent article I created about the CCToMM. I was surprised to see the article was recently marked for deletion. As a new contributor to Wikipedia, I would like some more guidance on how to improve the article so it is not tagged as a) lacking references and b) not meeting "Wikipedia's general notability guidelines".

In the meantime, I was able to spare a bit of time to add a section on history and one more reference.

Please note that I used this article as template which seems to adhere more closely to Wikipedia standards (at least judging by the lack of warning messages at the top).

P.S.: Once this page is 'approved', I have plans to create the French language version.

Cheers, Jcarrete (talkcontribs) 06:56, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Page Reviewing

Hi Sarah, I saw you marked University of Mohaghegh Ardabili as reviewed. Is this because I didn't do it properly? I was under the impression that I had already reviewed it.--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 20:30, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi there. It came up unreviewed in my queue via Special:NewPagesFeed. I did have to add some templates to it - it wasn't tagged as missing references. So, perhaps it just got lost in the shuffle for you :) SarahStierch (talk) 20:35, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
Hmm interesting I noticed it because it said it hadn't been reviewed since 2006 using the page curation tool, and that popped up on the article saying I had reviewed it ... this could be a bug do you know who developed it? --Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 20:38, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
You can maybe stop by Kaldari's talk page, he was involved in the project to create it at WMF. There's also Bugzilla :) SarahStierch (talk) 20:40, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Dear Sarah. First, I would like to wish you an happy new year .

Please may I request your help for the following articles I have proposed. There are some things I don't understand :

Many many thanks in advance for your help. Please do not hesitate to improve the articles directly. Best Regards. 2A01:E34:EEFA:F070:A84F:B323:7BFA:F713 (talk) 14:18, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

Miss Jin Rong

Hi Sarah, Thanks for your assistance in reviewing my article. I would like to further understand why you declined the article? Specifically, the article in question is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Jin_Rong_(Miss_Earth_China_2012)

You cited that the reason for declining the article is that it is from an unreliable source. The webpage I cited is the official Miss Earth website, therefore I consider it to be definitive to demonstrate the veracity of what I said. Is there any additional information that's required? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stevesports (talkcontribs) 23:01, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

Newbie help from teahouse and list making

Sarah, I saw that you were interested in lists and would like your opinion on lists and using wiki sortables for lists.

A user has started demanding an article layout (for a list) be changed according to his desire against the vote of everyone else who has reverted the changes. It is really odd. I am a new user and have no idea how to handle the situation. And is this type of thing a regular occurrence? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:List_of_people_who_have_been_called_a_polymath

I am also updating the page of Patrick M. Byrne which has extremely confusing Talk page requirements.Bhalluka (talk) 19:10, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

Dear Sarah,

WRT article about Elliot Ward Cheney, Jr.

WRT article about Elliot Ward Cheney, Jr.

We don't understand the objection "not adequately supported by reliable sources"

All of the information in this article has been obtained directly from Professor Cheney, his wife, and his children as well as people who have worked with him for years. Dr. Cheney kept a detailed bio-data file with his various actives, article, travel, etc which has been put online.

Is there something about the style your are objecting to?

Please be specific with regard to exactly what you want changed.

Professor Cheney has recently been named as a Fellow of the AMS among his many other awards and honors.

I have finished updating and improving the page for Elliott Ward Cheney, Jr.

Please take a look at it.

It seems a shame that someone who is late in their life and has a life-time of accomplishments can't have a Wikipedia page and has to wait until he is not living! Oh well, we'll keep this at the ready since it probably won't be that long ....

Hi Sarah,

I represent the artist John Van Alstine, who is the subject of a wikipedia article that you submitted. However, there are several mistakes in the articles. I have attempted to correct these mistakes by editing the article, but you reverted back to the original version. Can you tell me how we can correct this article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tkane401 (talkcontribs) 21:49, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi there. The best thing to do is to leave comments on the talk page of the article, and back up your preferred changes with reliable sources. This is because there is a pretty obvious conflict of interest, which can cause some issues when editing. Sadly, it's a pain in the butt..and Wikipedia won't change policy anytime soon :( But, leaving your suggestions on the talk page is the best option and we'll update it as we can! Thanks a lot. Hey! I just wanted to say thanks for pointing out that Snuggle wasn't updating after my demo. I went to go look into it and one of our analytics databases stopped updating along with enwiki on Jan. 8th! It's sad, but I probably wouldn't have noticed that for a long time and the longer it hasn't been updating, the longer it will take to catch up. You've saved us a lot of time. :) Once I get ops to give it a kick, Snuggle should be up-to-date again. --EpochFail(talk|work) 18:49, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

Smithsonian, eh?

I have been working on an article that you may be able to help with. John Weaver (artist) worked there years ago. Does anyone have info, images, etc to help expand his article?--Canoe1967 (talk) 23:51, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi Canoe. I haven't worked at the Smithsonian as Wikipedian in Residence in a year, meaning certain resources are no longer accessible to me. Anything you could possibly find about him might be able to possibly be found via their SIRIS website. Sorry I can't provide more assistance! SarahStierch (talk) 00:17, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
Ooops! Didn't see the past tense. I seem to remember asking you the same question before when we crossed paths. As an employee they may not have online public access records on him. He was alive when I created the article and has passed since. I do hope he saw it first. It seems any material before the internet is hard to find online. Most sites only provide their material from that point in online archives. Older books will go out of easy access eventually and thus lose more recorded history. I talked to a museum curator recently that said many older archives are in dire need of cataloguing, let alone digitizing. I wish I had time to volunteer to help.--Canoe1967 (talk) 00:31, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

Your opinions would be appreciated

Hello Sarah,

I am a relatively new editor here, and this is my first attempt at starting a writing an essay WikiProject (I started with the former, but somehow wavered away to the latter). You can find it here - User:TheOriginalSoni/Rolling Ball. What my intention is to create a friendly group of like minded but dedicated editors who can help each other around in the various projects and ask each other to jump into discussions and stuff.

Please do look into it when you get the time, and if tell me you think something needs to be changed. Do leave your two cents worth on the talk page and tell me what you think about it. As I am not too sure how to proceed with it, it would also be good if you could point me to the best course of action that I should be taking.

Thanks and cheers, TheOriginalSoni (talk) 23:09, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

Hey Sarah! I just ran across this article via Reddit. Nice work. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help with the inevitable mass upload of images into Commons. I'm not much of a programmer, but I don't mind doing tedious repetitive tasks. Cheers. Braincricket (talk) 21:47, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

Maitre'd Calendar

Hey Sarah-- hope the new year has treated you well so far. Gtwfan52 (talk · contribs) asked me about the maitre'd calendar, and wondered if it might be able to display the current month first rather than all the previous months since we started. I also thought it might be possible to just archive the past months on a subpage-- is this doable? I, Jethrobot drop me a line (note: not a bot!) 02:05, 18 January 2013 (UTC)

I suppose! I built that calendar to the best of my ability and I'm sure there is room for improvement. BE bold! :) SarahStierch (talk) 02:06, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
OK. I'm not too familiar with automatic archiving, but for now, I can do a copy-and-paste job. I, Jethrobot drop me a line (note: not a bot!) 02:09, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm not sure how automatic archiving for a calendar works, if it's any different than normal archiving (i.e. mizabot). I figured it out by copy and pasting, as many things on wiki. I build that calendar based on someone else's code :) SarahStierch (talk) 02:10, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
Did some reading on User:MiszaBot II, and came across a template that you can use to prevent a bot from archiving until a certain date. I've implemented those for the future months. Also, hopefully, within the next day or so, previous months should go into an archive at the top. Otherwise...there is the copy and pasting. :) I, Jethrobot drop me a line (note: not a bot!) 02:24, 18 January 2013 (UTC)

"Affluent"

Re. [[1]] - this guy has been adding this, plus the phrase "grew up wealthy", again and again and again - for months - on various BLPs. See Category:Wikipedia sockpuppets of Wikitime Continuum - there are dozens of unmarked ones I just blocked, but now I'm starting to tag them. Just FYI - Alison 02:01, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

Gah. Yeah, I didn't know that guy had such a track record. Er..a wealthy and affluent record, I should say ;) Thanks Allison! SarahStierch (talk) 02:02, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, I've not gone through the contribs of all the socks yet (wayyy to busy IRL) but it looks like a big can o' worms right now. They have some strange POV re. African-American people and are depopulating the associated categories everywhere I look. Or something. It's strange! Anyways, ongoing .... - Alison 02:06, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

I have a question

about the Smithsonian and the SIRIS database and copyright. Is it true that any picture on SIRIS is copyright free and can be used here? And if so, how is this possible? Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 15:19, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

Yup. If it's public domain, and it's taken by a Smithsonian federal employee that is, or a contractor, then yes, it can be. It most likely falls under "no known copyright" depending on the age. SarahStierch (talk) 18:23, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
So some of the pictures on SIRIS I took as an SOS volunteer. can I use a print from the negatives - which I still have - or do I have to download from SIRIS? Can I use pictures that I took, sent to them, but they used other ones on-line? Sorry to get so complicated, but I don't know where else to ask. Carptrash (talk) 18:34, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
I guess you can. I really don't know all of the details. Someone who might be a good person to double check with would be User:Sarasays. She works at the Archives of American Art and has a pretty good knowledge about these things. If she can't help, she can probably put you in touch with someone who can. While I like to think I know "how the Smithsonian works" regarding these things, I'm always nervous. SarahStierch (talk) 18:38, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip, I'm off to Sarasays after lunch and a trip to Taos. Carptrash (talk) 18:53, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

Sarah, I need help

I might have put this in the wrong place the first time, so I'm trying again.

Hi Sarah. You've been helpful to me in the past, so I figure I'd come to you. I need help with two things:

1) I'm trying to upload a picture (File:Lawrance A. Bohm from Bohm Law Group website.jpg). I sent an email to the permissions email showing that I had permission from the copyright holder to upload the picture, but nothing happened. See below.

2) Also, see message from Jim below. He stated "The third is that the WP:EN article-to-be (Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Lawrance A. Bohm) reads like a sales brochure for Mr. Bohm's services. I am uncomfortable with Commons supporting what looks like a publicist's work. Bradley J. Mancuso, who is our requester here and the sole author of the article at WP:EN, works for Mr. Bohm."

I have tried really hard to follow the instructions for creating a new page. I've provided a bunch of sources to demonstrate the notoriety of the subject and I've worked to keep the page neutral. I've followed formats of similar pages. This page is no different than these pages:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Lanier

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloria_Allred

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juan_Dominguez_%28lawyer%29

I could list several more.

Can you please help me? What do I need to do?

Here are past messages regarding this page/image:

Regarding the below file/image, I was given this response: File:Lawrance A. Bohm from Bohm Law Group website.jpg

I have been given full permission to use this picture. The owner of this picture is Lawrance A. Bohm. He personally took the picture, posted it on another website, and owns the copyright. Mr. Bohm has given me full permission to use this picture. Bjm99c (talk) 01:23, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Not done. OTRS permission from the copyright holder is needed before the file can be restored. INeverCry 03:07, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Please see below message from the copyright holder of this image giving permission to use this file/image.

Yes to both questions.

Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose I have three problems with this.

The first is that this appears to be a professional, posed, portrait. It looks to me very unlikely that the subject took it himself as claimed above. It is far more likely that the copyright is owned by the photographer.

The second is that the permission above is very casual. There is absolutely no indication that Mr. Bohm understands that he is licensing the use of his image for use anywhere, including commercial use and derivative works. Although it doesn't say so, I think what appears above amounts to a Wikipedia only license.

The third is that the WP:EN article-to-be (Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Lawrance A. Bohm) reads like a sales brochure for Mr. Bohm's services. I am uncomfortable with Commons supporting what looks like a publicist's work. Bradley J. Mancuso, who is our requester here and the sole author of the article at WP:EN, works for Mr. Bohm.

Therefore, as INC says above, we need both a license from the actual photographer, using the procedure at Commons:OTRS and some consideration of whether this violates COM:ADVERT. . Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 22:31, 8 January 2013 (UTC) Bjm99c (talk) 20:39, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

Music For All Seasons Help

Hi Sarah, I have been working on a wikipedia page for Music For All Seasons, a non-profit music therapy organization in New Jersey. I am new to Wikipedia and after trying multiple times to create a page, I have been denied. And I am looking for some help. Re: "Li Sao" illustrations

Hi SarahStierch: First I'd like to thank you for your fine work. Just this morning, I was thinking how wonderful to find some illustrations for the "Li Sao" and related articles. How wonderful to see someone else had been working in this area and was ahead of me! I wouldn't bother you about this, but I guess as WDL Wikipedian in residence, you should know that the Illustrated Li Sao actually appears to be the Chu Ci anthology (despite the title printed on the book cover), of which "Li Sao" is one of many sections. I'll try to work on this, at least in English Wikipedia and Commons. It might take a while, since if it keeps on raining like this we'll probably loose PG&E here, plus Wikipedia is apparently headed into read-only mode for a few days, plus I still have to finish reading through the material, plus.... Anyway, thank you again. Dcattell (talk) 22:01, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi there. So you believe the documentation on the WDL website is incorrect? I'm currently wading through the content from their website that has been uploaded to Commons. This is a pretty big deal if this isn't what they're saying it, since it's part of the Library of Congress and we'll have to inform LOC staff. Thanks! SarahStierch (talk) 22:51, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
Also, how can we prove that it's not the Li Sao? I just need to make sure I have all the necessary information before I present this to WDL/LOC. Thanks! SarahStierch (talk) 23:04, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
For a student of the Classical Chinese language (not the most popular language, since it's a "dead language", like Latin), it's clear that there is some inaccuracy in the description at WDL (not sure about LOC yet). It's more like a bit of a confusion or mix up, than a really huge error, though it seems to be worth addressing. Basically, the 1645 book is a Qing dynasty edition of a poetry anthology of which the known editions have usually been published under the title of the Chuci (meaning collected materials in or of the style of the ancient Chinese state named Chu), which has had many editions. The most famous (and signature) poem is "Li Sao", by Qu Yuan. The edition at WDL happened to be re-titled with the main title "Illustrated Li Sao". It probably has a subtitle somewhere that says "And Other Poems by Qu Yuan", or something like that. So, it's true that the images are all from a book called "Illustrated Li Sao"; however, not all of the images involved are of the poem "Li Sao", just the ones in the "Li Sao" section. There are other sections where different poems are illustrated, for example the one you posted at Li Sao is from "Lord of the East", as the caption on the picture indicates (東君), although in older forms of the Chinese characters (the modern simplified version is even more different). Anyway, the poem "Lord of the East" is not the poem "Li Sao", even though it's in a book titled Illustrated Li Sao (and other poems). Thus, that one image is an illustration of the poem "Lord of the East", from the book Illustrated Li Sao but it wasn't an illustration of the poem "Li Sao"! Hence the confusion! That's it, basically, thought it gets a bit more complicated. Let me see what I can do in the next couple of days, and I'll look a bit more into it and do what I can to help come up with a detailed explanation/proof. I should be able to get some help from some academically-oriented editors that are into Classical Chinese, maybe user:Keahapana, if Keahapana's not too disgruntled about the CI stuff. Dcattell (talk) 00:30, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
Yes I'll gladly try to help. First, I'm confused about your Dong jun 東君 "Lord of the East" (Hawkes p. 112) reference. Are we talking about the caption on Fichier:Li sao illustré 2 1.png? From my limited familiarity with seal graphs, this caption reads: Sanlü dafu 三閭大夫 "Lord of the Three Wards" (a title referring to Qu Yuan, see "Yufu" Hawkes p. 207), buzhu卜居 "divining where to live", and apparently kangshou 糠手 "chaff hand" (which I can't find, perhaps a means of divination?, maybe not 糠?). Compare Emperor Yōmei's daughter Nukade hime 糠手 in this ja interwiki 糠手姫皇女. Also, check out these Scenes Illustrating Melodies from the Chu Ci. Keahapana (talk) 03:52, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

iRobust deleted?

I spent some time starting a article on a serious scientific society. Did you happen to take a look at the website of the society before deleting the article? The article that I started was just a stub. But it is likely that members of the society would be happy to expand the article.

iRobust is a highly significant society as evidenced by the prestige of the members of its Board as listed in the article. It has already had tremendous impact with its first Symposium Inconsistency Robustness 2011. The Program Committee of its forthcoming symposium Inconsistency Robustness 2014 includes the international leading experts.Untalker (talk) 16:16, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi there. I'm really sorry I had to delete your article. After extensive research I determined that iRobust was a non-significant organization at this time. Perhaps it's WP:TOOSOON for the organization to have it's own article. See, all Wikipedia articles have to meet a "notability" guideline. We even have guidelines for organizations, which you can find here: WP:ORG. Once the organization has recognized in numerous reliable sources, it should be able to be included in Wikipedia, but right now, it appears it does not. Sorry :( SarahStierch (talk) 18:59, 26 January 2013 (UTC)yar

Message from Kswcarey

Hi Sarah, on Dec 23, you reviewed and rejected a page I created on Openwave Messaging. I was going to go in and edit the page to resubmit, but it appears you also deleted the page, and I don't have an up to date copy of the page because I didn't know you would do that. How can I get that back?

Also, I wouldn't mind your help editing the page. I used quite a few citations, but was still rejected for not citing sources properly. How can that be?

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kswcarey (talkcontribs) 22:01, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi, you restored File:Brookspiano.jpg nearly five months ago and tagged the file with {{OTRS pending}}, which has yet to be resolved. Any follow up on this? — ξxplicit 01:07, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for the thank you :) It's one of those often "thankless" tasks, so I appreciate it! SarahStierch (talk) 19:07, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
That's funny, because it's probably one of the most useful tasks. In addition to reducing spam, it helps kids bypass the "do not cite Wikipedia" problem. I see we have similar interests - admin, history, photography, travel. I live in the U.P. and plan to upgrade my camera in the next couple of months (Canon t4i). If here's anything I can shoot for you, give me a shout. Rklawton (talk) 19:42, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Date formats

Hi Sarah, thanks for your addition of World Digital Library links! However, please try to remember to use the correct date format in accessdates per the relevant section of the Manual of Style. For US topics except those related to the modern US military (like Dust Bowl (where I noticed this issue), the month should come first; for topics relatd to the UK and other Commonwealth countries besides Canada, the day comes first; for all other countries including Canada, follow the prevailing date format if there is one, or just use whichever one you like to start off with. Graham87 01:25, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

I'd rather just use one or the other than have to "remember" each time. What would you prefer? SarahStierch (talk) 01:33, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
Oh, and when I cite a source, I use the cite tool that's in the toolbox in the edit window. It puts the date first automatically. SarahStierch (talk) 01:34, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
It depends which topics you mostly edit; if they're mostly related to America, then use the month/day format; if not, then use day/month. From a quick peek at your most recent contributions, it seems that your WDL contribs are about topics from all over the world, so maybe stick to what you're doing and let those who care about such things fix those problems when they find them. Ah, I've been pretty busy. I must have forgotten about it. Thanks Crisco! SarahStierch (talk) 12:05, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
  • Ditto from me Sarah. It's quite an achievement to have a biography on Wikipedia so early in your career. Nice picture too.
And while I'm here, I've noticed you've again started a drive for ideas about how we should expand coverage of women in history this year. We had a fair amount of success with women in architecture last year - and coverage has been growing ever since. To turn to photography, about a hundred women are listed here and there are as many more on [Category:Women photographers]. I would suggest we start out by developing the list on a country-by-country basis (as for the List of female architects), adding short comments on each one. Then we could also write an article on "Women in photography" similar to that on Women in architecture. If you think it's a good idea, you could perhaps try to encourage participation from all the fine ladies involved in Wikipedia:WikiProject Women's History. You would probably gain more respect from them than I would. Last year I was told in no uncertain terms that anyone born after 1950 had not yet qualified to be covered by the project. So I had to go back and delete the project line from the talk page of quite a few articles I had started! But on reflection, I don't see why Sarah Stierch should not be included in WikiProject Women's History - you are, after all, pioneering an evolving cause.--Ipigott (talk) 12:13, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
Hi Ipigott. I am pretty busy these days with three jobs, so I don't have a lot of time to do much for WikiWomen's History Month like last year. I do think it's a good idea regarding the women in photography article, and encouraging coverage about women photographers - absolutely. I'd also consider adding it to the "to do" list for WWHM, which you can find a link someplace on that page too. Remember, there are also men involved in Women's History project - and it doesn't matter who delivers the request, everyone is respected as long as they don't disrespect the project and the people involved (like any project). Anyway, I'm pretty swamped with work related stuff (including work related for WDL which does bring me on Wikipedia), so I encourage you t be bold and spread the word, and share it via the mailing lists and WWHM page, for sure. Thank you for all you do. (and the women's history thing is up to the community..not me to decide...of course!) SarahStierch (talk) 13:36, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

Just adding to the congrats. You get around! I even saw you mentioned on Skepchick not long ago. Take care, AstroCog (talk) 13:15, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

  • Wow. I've never known anyone personally who actually had their own picture on the main page. Congrats! Now I have a goal to aim for. First thing, I need to do something worth getting an article about me. It's a toss-up, either win a Nobel Prize or go on a multi-state crime spree. I'm torn, really. Anyhoo, good one! --Jayron32 14:58, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

Wow, Main Page appearance and all! Congrats! :) If only we were all lucky enough to have our own Wikipedia article. --Another Believer (Talk) 15:35, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

Sarah, congrats. This is really nice; you certainly deserve it. Along with many, I appreciate the work that you do for women's causes. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:59, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

Teahouse Birthday

Hi Sarah! I know you're moving on to big and exciting new projects, but as the Founding Dreamer of the Teahouse project, I'd love to have a brief reflection from you to share in a celebratory 1-year anniversary blog post.

  • What excited you most about seeing the project come together?
  • What do you hope for the future of the Teahouse?

I don't even have to say it, but thank you for the amazing work you started, because it's obvious that you created something awesome and I hope and believe it will be an enduring part of Wikipedia. Cheers! Ocaasi t | c 00:50, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
