FA nomination for Icelandic Phallological Museum
As the reviewer a few months ago of the GA nomination of Icelandic Phallological Museum, I thought you might be interested to know that I've nominated it for featured article status. The nomination is at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Icelandic Phallological Museum/archive1. You're very welcome to comment, if you have any views on the matter. Can you do the write-up on this one? Same reason as usual. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:13, 31 May 2012 (UTC)
- Although, keeping in mind that we considered me having an interview a while back, I could probably leave the entire write-up alone if you think this is a good week for that. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:16, 31 May 2012 (UTC)
- ok, will do. As for interview, how about for the issue after this? MathewTownsend (talk) 17:54, 31 May 2012 (UTC)
- Sure. Alright, I'll do some work on this issue. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:03, 31 May 2012 (UTC)
- It's just that there isn't time to come up with questions, do the interview (your answers) and edit it for the upcoming issue. Don't you think? (Plus I'm still struggling with figuring out how to not feel bad when editing here. Even Featured content is starting to become "watched" - no mistakes. Not peaceful anymore.) MathewTownsend (talk) 00:08, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
- If you need a break, no need to worry. I think you may like content creation even if it doesn't get a plus or a star; I've done a bit of work on that, like at Babi Island (Aceh). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:23, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

- K, do you want me to do the rest of the blurbs? Don't want to risk an edit conflict. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:05, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
- I can do the rest, now that I've dipped my toe in. Is the blurb on Ruma Maida ok? MathewTownsend (talk) 13:17, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
- Looks good to me. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:22, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
Hello! I saw this article about my city. It was full of wrong information, violating copyright laws by directly copying data from websites and providing information that was not useful. So, I have written it from scratch providing as much relevant information as I can along with citations. Now, the article is complete according to me and I have nominated it for good article and I want you to review it. Please let me know if there is anything missing or anything relevant or anything not following Wikipedia standards so that I can correct it. And if everything is correct, then please review it and approve its nomination. Thanks. Vishal14K Vishal14K 18:44, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
- Hi, I looked at the article and at first glance it looks very interesting and well done. However, I'm not an expert on India or articles on cites, so I'll go through the article but I can't make any promises. Looks like you did a good job thought! Article Feedback Tool, Version 5
Hey all :)
Just a quick update on what we've been working on:
- The centralised feedback page is now live! Feel free to use it and all other feedback pages; there's no prohibition on playing around, dealing with the comments or letting others know about it, although the full release comes much later. Let me know if you find any bugs; we know it's a bit odd in Monobook, but that should be fixed in our deployment this week.
- On Thursday, 7th June we'll be holding an office hours session at 20:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office. We'll be discussing all the latest developments, as well as what's coming up next; hope to see you all there!
- Those of you who hand-coded feedback; I believe I contacted you all about t-shirts. If I didn't, drop me a line and I'll get it sorted out :).

Making the Wikipedia Education Program Meeting better
Thanks for expressing interest in the Wikipedia Education Program Metrics and Activities Meeting. I'm investigating ways to make the meeting more effective, and I'd love to get feedback from you as to what we could do to improve the meeting. Please weigh in on the discussion there! -- LiAnna Davis (WMF) (talk)
moin Mathew, i addressed some of your points here. one side note on the diff-link i provided on education: i sent you an email as i was looking into education at the time, because i was (vaguely) aware that you also took the time to look at this program. in fact most likely went through far greater length than i did then. the mail could have been sent the same day, april 26, actually. please consider to check your mail box regarding it :), all best --Jan eissfeldt (talk) 14:08, 10 June 2012 (UTC)
- thanks, Mathew. that is indeed as unusual as it is unfortunate; happened only twice over the years, as far as i know, that mails from or towards me got lost in wikipedia's very own email system. however, if you like, we can still look into the topic; july is some way down the track, so there is still time to deal with it properly, all best --Jan eissfeldt (talk) 17:52, 10 June 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry, I did find your email. Let me study it and figure out what you are saying. I'm not sure what you are asking. MathewTownsend (talk) 18:06, 10 June 2012 (UTC)
- okay, i re-wrote it from re-collection (i can't restore it inside wikipedia's system (or at least i don't know how)) just minutes ago. so there might be some differences but i'm glade it finally surfaced. so lets look into this issue complex together :), all best --Jan eissfeldt (talk) 18:19, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

The Tea Leaf - Issue Four
Hi! Welcome to the fourth issue of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter for the Teahouse!
- Teahouse pilot wraps up after 13 weeks After being piloted on English Wikipedia starting in February, the Teahouse wrapped up its pilot period on May 27, 2012. We expect this is just the beginning for the Teahouse and hope the project will continue to grow in the months to come!
Thank you and congratulations to all of the community members who participated - and continue to participate!
- What you've all been waiting for: Teahouse Pilot Report is released! We look forward to your feedback on the methodology and outcomes of this pilot project.
- ....and if a pilot report wasn't enough, the Teahouse Pilot Metrics Report is out too! Dive into the numbers and survey results to learn about the impact the Teahouse has made on English Wikipedia.
- Teahouse shows positive impact on new editor retention and engagement
- 409 new editors participated during the entire pilot period, with about 40 new editors participating in the Teahouse per week.
- Two weeks after participating, 33% of Teahouse guests are still active on Wikipedia, as opposed to 11% of a similar control group.
- New editors who participated in the Teahouse edit 10x the number of articles, make 7x more global edits, and 2x as much of their content survives on Wikipedia compared to the control group.
- Women participate in the Teahouse 28% of Teahouse participants were women, up from 9% of editors on Wikipedia in general, good news for this project which aimed to have impact on the gender gap too - but still lots to be done here!
- New opportunities await for the Teahouse in phase two as the Teahouse team and Wikipedia community examine ways to improve, scale, and sustain the project. Opportunities for future work include:
- Automating or semi-automating systems such as invites, metrics and archiving
- Experimenting with more ways for new editors to discover the Teahouse
- Building out the social and peer-to-peer aspects further, including exploring ways to make answering questions easier, creating more ways for new editors to help each other and for all participants to acknowledge each other's efforts
- Growing volunteer capacity, continuing to transfer Teahouse administration tasks to volunteers whenever possible, and looking for new ways to make maintenance and participation easier for everyone.
- Want to know how you can lend a hand at the Teahouse? Become a host! Learn more about what makes the Teahouse different than other help spaces on Wikipedia and see how you can help new editors by visiting here.
- Say hello to the new guests at the Teahouse. Take the time to welcome and get to know the latest guests at the Teahouse. Drop off some wikilove to these editors today, as being welcomed by experienced editors is really encouraging to new Wikipedians.

AFT5 release coming up - help us design a banner!
Hey all :). First-off, thanks to everyone for all their help so far; we're coming up to a much wider deployment :). Starting at the end of this month, and scaling up until 3 July, AFT5 will begin appearing on 10 percent of articles. For this release we plan on sending out a CentralNotice that every editor will see - and for this, we need your help :). We've got plans, we know how long it's going to run for, where it's going to run...but not what it says. If you've got ideas for banners, give this page a read and submit your suggestion! GA?
Hey Mathew,
There's a request for a (relatively) short notice GA review at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Disability#GAN_1962_Commonwealth_Paraplegic_Games, and you poped into my head as someone as someone who can pull a good, thorough GA review out of the bag for that sort of thing. If your busy then no problem - I'll take a look at it this weekend, I just thought I'd check if you where availible first - normally I try not to review other disability articles because I feel a little close to them, Cheers Fayedizard (talk) 18:21, 20 June 2012 (UTC)
- Hey, I'm sorry to let you down. But it's a long article on a topics I know nothing about, on some sports I've never heard of, and I don't have access to any of the sources. And I've never dealt with an article with so many big tables etc. So I wouldn't be an editor that could provide an adequate GA review, I'm afraid. But thanks for thinking about me! Best wishes, MathewTownsend (talk)
- Thank you so much for that hour you spent editting today - much much appreciated :) I suspect that's going to make my life much easier - thank you so much! Fayedizard (talk) 15:13, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

Horsefield
Thanks for considering the John Horsefield for GAN. I look forward to your comments. - Sitush (talk) 23:33, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- Hi, thanks for the comments and in particular the opening remark. My mother has promised some of his daffodils for my birthday later this year. There is only one place in Britain that appears to sell them and, living in Whitefield as I do, it will be nice to "bring them home". The only snag is, I am not remotely green-fingered & there could well be a case of narcissus murder before next spring!
Is it ok if I intersperse my replies to your comments or would you prefer then en bloc at the end of the review section? - Sitush (talk) 19:54, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
- Interspersing is fine (as long as its clear whose saying what)! MathewTownsend (talk) 19:57, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
- I've addressed those issues that I can, and raised a few queries of my own. I hope that you do not consider me to be argumentative - it is certainly not intended in that way. Thanks again. - Sitush (talk) 21:24, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
- No. I was just about to pass the article when I got the orange message banner. I don't think any of the issues are worth arguing about or preventing a GA. Perhaps the blockquote issue bothers me the most, but probably there's no fixed rule, so ..... I'll drop it. This man and these botanists are wonderful to read about. MathewTownsend (talk) 21:29, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
- OK, thanks very much. I will bear the unresolved comments in mind and in particular I will be checking on my use of "teetotal" vs "the teetotaler". I am really pleased that you enjoyed the content as a "story". There is quite a bunch of these people, including one or two women (particularly unusual, at that time, especially in pubs). I've recently created Category:Botanists from Lancashire because the movement was significant and more articles will follow. I like social history even though I really know nothing about botany. If I ever get to Manchester Central Library, which has been shut for a couple of years for refurbishment, then there is a chance that I may take this one to FA. - Sitush (talk) 23:19, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
- yes, these people are quite remarkable. I've run across articles about people like this before. Even Charles Darwin, who had a medical education, seems to have been largely self educated and driven by the pure desire to seek knowledge and his love of nature. I remember especially his Fertilisation of Orchids. MathewTownsend (talk) 23:30, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
- That's a nice article. I am amazed that there isn't one for Culpeper's Herbal, but maybe one day ... - Sitush (talk) 13:52, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

- Sorry, you of course Mathew - but I see you're already onto it. And don't worry about not having any expertise in botany, neither have I - or Sitush for that matter. We just like writing about botanists - oh! and, in my case, self-taught astronomers. Richerman (talk) 17:34, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

Non-free stuff
Hi Mathew, I just saw the thread on WT:GAN. I passed Brushstrokes series a couple weeks back, do you think their is too much non-free content on that? Copyright issues didn't occur to me when I was doing the review, but it is pretty heavy on the quotes. Any thoughts? Mark Arsten (talk) 03:03, 27 June 2012 (UTC)

Please take the GA fail as a opportunity to clarify your thoughts about what you want in the article Unionskirche, Idstein - in fact there may be more than one article on the material e.g. one on the church (building), one on the paintings, one on present day music, etc.
- Also, you can learn a great deal about how to build an article for GAN by reviewing articles at Good article nominations. Doing so makes you think: "hey, what do these GA criteria mean?" Following the GA criteria enables writing a GA. Best wishes, MathewTownsend (talk) 12:40, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
- No, you didn't, add to blackness I mean, it just seemed so fitting ;) I didn't enjoy the appearance of BWV 76 as lead DYK on 7 July 2011 at all, but now - as you hopefully saw - I proudly present it myself. Unionskirche: you are right about many things, please allow some time to act on it. (I thought I had seven days, I really did.) - I do a lot of reviewing for DYK, always trying to improve the articles. GA is too high for my language skills, - but it's my initials ;) - Did you see (on my talk) that you were already part of turning the blackness to brighter when you reviewed Noel F. Parrish? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:57, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
- No, I didn't understand about the blackness (and didn't see Noel F. Parrish on your page), but I'm glad I didn't contribute to it! Without the hold, you don't have to hurry. You'll have time to think. It sounds to me that your interest may be more the paintings and the present day music than the church itself. So you could retitle (or start a new article) on the subject of you interest rather than to learn architecture etc. (If you're not interested in architecture, then learning it could be a chore.) MathewTownsend (talk) 13:30, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
- Possibly "Kirche" doesn't translate well to "church"? The "church itself" (any church) is for me the building + the history + the people + the services + the music, I will improve with that in mind, but not nominate the article for GA again, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:48, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
- If you want to understand the blackness, just click on the contribs of BarkingMoon: BWV 10, BWV 76, so long, - it made me close to leaving myself, but I am happy I didn't --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:58, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
- Could you explain more what the links to BarkingMoon mean? and why it was "blackness"? I think you can write the article any way you want. It's only if it comes up for review e.g. GAN or FAC that questions of organization, compliance with MoS standards etc. arise. Many editors write for their own pleasure and not to collect rewards! MathewTownsend (talk) 14:10, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
- Explain: it's on my user, but I summarize: he promoted the two cantatas to lead DYK, and after the latter one left Wikipedia, just follow the links. His talk tells you a lot, I take care of it ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:54, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry for not understanding. BarkingMoon promoted the two cantatas to lead DYK, but then he asks to be blocked? Why did he ask to be blocked? MathewTownsend (talk) 15:54, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
- You follow his (!) link on "So long", please, and/or browse the talk page from the beginning. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:04, 7 July 2012 (UTC)

well, I did follow a bunch of links and ended up on a page where the last comment made to BarkingMoon was by an admin who is now banned forever, User:Will Beback. I can't say I understand what's going on there. Why doesn't BarkingMoon ask to be unblocked? MathewTownsend (talk) 17:17, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
- Next day, after church (the other one): easy answer, but not too helpful: I don't know. Or, as the one you mentioned above (and "forever" meens 6 months) said: "We'll never know the true story". Trying to unfold a bit: I was a happy content editor, not caring about the background of WP, until Rlevse became a victim of WP:Great Dismal Swamp in November 2010. I couldn't believe it, posted against it, but then shrugged and returned to content. When BarkingMoon appeared in May 2011, enough people thought he was a sockpuppet of Rlevse to make him leave. (You know what SPI means?) - This time I did what I could to fight it. It took a while but was rather successful. Now he could return. But I would not be surprised if he never looked back here. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:26, 8 July 2012 (UTC)
- ps: we miss more than that one, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:30, 8 July 2012 (UTC)
- ps: what you saw on User:Rlevse until 22 June 2012 was that the page had been deleted, - not even a history, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:46, 9 July 2012 (UTC)
