[edit]

There have been two problems identified with this account: the account has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia, and your username indicates that the account represents a business or other organisation or group, which is also against policy, as an account must be for just one person. Because of those problems, the account has been blocked indefinitely from editing.

If you intend to make useful contributions about some topic other than your business or organisation, you may request an unblock. To do so, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:CentralAuth to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy. Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:

  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first. Ks0stm (TCGE) 08:13, 8 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

M WOODS is a non-profit museum making significant contributions to contemporary art practices in China and the scholarship around it. This account is not spam.

Decline reason:

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

The nature of this block seems entirely discriminatory towards Chinese contributors. I intend to use to his account to generate content about contemporary art within the context of greater China. It's notable that the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art has an account, an institution much like our own also based in Beijing. I would know because I've worked for UCCA. These exceptions can only be considered as a form of favoritism, and certainly do not hold with the greater democratic aims of Wikipedia. "Asian" themed content was also targeted last month on the site, so I'm rather clueless as to where we are crossing a line. Museums across the world have their own pages on Wikipedia, and their own accounts for managing the content found on them. Also, the content we have contributed thus far could hardly be construed as advertising because 1) the information provided is objective and 2) the article points away from any supposed benefactor through embedded links which drive users to further explore notions of contemporary art outside of the context of M WOODS, thus defeating any clear intent for advertisement. Simple inclusion within Wikipedia cannot be construed as advertisement--which is what you seem to be postulating. It should also be noted that, MWOODS, the wiki-user, is in namesake entirely different from M WOODS, the museum (with space between M & WOODS).

Decline reason:

I'm declining this request on the grounds that it again completely fails to address the reason for your block - which is having a username in the name of an organization and writing about that organization (and please leave off the disingenuous stuff about there being no space in your username). Ignoring that and instead alleging discrimination is not helping your case. Further, museums across the world do not have their own pages on Wikipedia, or their own accounts for managing the content found on them. Wikipedia has articles about them (the museums do not own the articles), and museums are not allowed to have their own organization/group accounts and are not allowed to manage articles about themselves. Where we find such an account, it is blocked just like this one.

I'll leave your other unblock request, below, open for another admin to review. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 10:21, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for pointing out the UCCA's account; I have blocked them as well per {{Uw-softerblock}}. Ks0stm (TCGE) 05:00, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

The biggest issue with this account seems to be the name, and with the intention of generating greater content about contemporary art in China, I am requesting the name to be changed. I find it a great stretch of the imagination to construe the article on M WOODS museum as falling under the category of advertisement, but to avoid further complications, I think it would be easier, and perhaps be viewed as more ethical, to dissociate this user from the M WOODS museum.

Decline reason:

Your proposed username is ok, but there are still concerns about conflict of interest. In your next unblock request, I recommend you advise that you will not make edits that relate to the museum. PhilKnight (talk) 00:09, 10 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • No, actually, it seams that you don't understand. The "biggest issue" with this account is not the username, but the WP:Conflict of interest. Do you understand our WP:COI policy? Do you agree to respect it (especially the part that says "COI editing is strongly discouraged"). Do you intend to write about your organization if unblock or do you intend to edit something else? Request reason:

I've already stated my intentions for contributing further content on contemporary Chinese art, and I've already very firmly argued that the article created on MWOODS cannot be construed as advertising. There's no need to prolong this argument into another week. User:Vanjagenije is correct to point out the rules regarding conflict of interest, which lie at the core of this issue. If the M WOODS article does pass, which is still yet to be determined, then this account will forfeit any right to editing the page. This will be my last attempt at changing the username.

Decline reason:

The central problem is that you won't acknowledge that the article you wrote was promotional in tone. PhilKnight (talk) 01:42, 19 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I was going to decline your latest unblock request, but I have decided instead to make an attempt to clarify some of the problems, and give you a chance to address them. It is difficult to imagine how anyone who can read a whole page as unambiguously promotional as the one you edited, and then repeatedly deny that it is promotional, can be expected to edit in the neutral, objective way required for Wikipedia. If you honestly don't see language such as "The ambition of the collection is to be truly timeless", for example, as promotional, then you lack the necessary ability to see how your own writing will look from the detached perspective of an uninvolved outsider. Also, although you have now said that you will not continue to edit the page about your museum, you have not indicated in what other ways you expect your future editing to differ from what you did before the block, so that we can be confident that you won't repeat the same sort of mistakes. Perhaps you can give a brief indication of what you think you may do for Wikipedia in the future. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 12:40, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
