Your Eustrombus gigas shell

[edit]

Just wanted to let you know that the shell in your featured image is not in its original condition. The lip has been filed or cut before it was sold in order to make it look neat and tidy. This happens a lot, but it is not the way the lip of a live-collected shell of this species really looks. Take a look at the image here to see how it should look. About your glorious images

[edit]

Hello Llez, thank you very much as always for your really wonderful images, which add so much value to our articles on gastropods! And thank you for placing so many of them into the appropriate taxon article.

I wanted to say that when you place the image in a species article, especially when the species is in a small genus, it is always worth checking to see if there is an image in the genus article already, or not. Very often there is no image in the genus article, and so the exact same image and caption can be inserted into the genus article, which only takes a minute.

By the way, as you may have noticed, I usually always put in a caption that says "Five views of the [[gastropod shell|shell]] of Xxxxxxx xxxxx". I have been placing some more of your images gradually over the last day or two.

Thanks so much again for any help you can give us with inserting the images, as we are short-staffed as usual! :) Invertzoo (talk) 17:03, 25 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Llez for the note on my talk page, and thanks so much for adding your lovely images on more pages. They really add so much value. Although most of our marine stubs are made these days by bot, I have been creating some new stubs by hand so that I can find homes for a few more of your images.

I wanted to say a couple of things: I imagine that you have bought at least some of your shells from dealers, or got some as trades from other other shell collectors? Do you any have favorite books or other sources that you like to use to check on the identifications? I ask because some of the species names for land and freshwater species I could not find using a google search.

I also wanted to point out that named forms of species do not have any taxonomic significance. Subspecies yes, but forms no. if you want to put the name of a form into a caption or description of an image, you need to indicate that it is a form name, otherwise, if you write it as a trinomial name, then it will appear to be a subspecies name. So in the case of forms you need to put Snailus biggus form giganteus, rather than Snailus biggus giganteus. All good wishes to you, Invertzoo (talk) 22:41, 26 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A reflection in the surface of Cribraria cribraria?

[edit]

Helo Llez. I think I see your window and you and your camera maybe, and a picture on your wall, all reflected in the shiny dorsal surface of this cowry. Do you see what I mean? Of course, maybe I am wrong. Best wishes, Invertzoo (talk) 00:28, 29 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Llez, thanks for your note and for the list of books. Well, at least I got the window right! Really it is amazing how shiny some of those cowries are, it's as if they were glassed! :) I am gradually putting more and more of your images into articles. Requesting Some German Translation

[edit]

Hello, I have a friend here on Wikipedia asking for a translation on the radio show Hallo Ü-Wagen, Ü-Wagen short for Übertragungswagen [de]. Using Google Translate, which admittedly isn't the best, Übertragungswagen translates to "radio van". German Wikipedia translates it to "broadcasting trucks". Since it is a radio show, I feel comfortable with "radio van". "Hallo" is easy, that's "Hello". So, I went with "Hello Radio Van". But I want to make for sure. Can you check my work for me, please? Thanks! - NeutralhomerTalk • 12:19 on April 8, 2019 (UTC)

Retusa truncatula image

[edit]

You recently removed an image from the infobox of Retusa truncatula without explanation. I assume there was a reason and it was not an accident, so could you please let me know what the reason was. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 10:26, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The reason was, the picture shows Retusa leptoeneilema and not Retusa truncatula (see e.g. F. Nordsieck: Die Europäischen Meeresschnecken, 1972, Gustav Fischer Verlag, Stuttgart p.34 and plate OV, 10 for differentiation). I put it in the correct category and removed it from the taxbox of R. truncatula. --Llez (talk) 10:45, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Theloderma corticale

Theloderma corticale is a species of frog in the family Rhacophoridae. It is found in northern Vietnam and China, and possibly also in Laos. Its common name, the mossy frog, arises from the fact that its skin is a mottled green and brown that resembles moss growing on rock, forming an effective camouflage. It has large sticky pads on its toes and a soft underbelly, with a snout–vent length of 61 millimetres (2.4 in). The females grow larger than the males and can reach sizes of 8 to 9 centimetres (3.1 to 3.5 in). When frightened, it will curl into a ball and play dead. This T. corticale frog was photographed at Karlsruhe Zoo in Germany.

Bézier curve

A Bézier curve is a parametric curve used in computer graphics and related fields. The curve, which is related to the Bernstein polynomial, is named after Pierre Bézier, who used it in the 1960s for designing curves for the bodywork of Renault cars. Other uses include the design of computer fonts and animation. Bézier curves can be combined to form a Bézier spline, or generalized to higher dimensions to form Bézier surfaces.

Five views of a Haliotis kamtschatkana shell

Haliotis kamtschatkana, also known as the northern abalone or pinto abalone, is a species of large sea snail in the family Haliotidae, the abalones. It is found in kelp beds and in rocky areas in the northeast Pacific Ocean, from Salisbury Sound, Alaska along the coasts of Canada and the United States to Baja California, Mexico. Its distribution also includes Korea. The pinto abalone has an adult shell size of approximately 8 cm (3.1 in) but can occasionally grow as large as 15 cm (5.9 in). The rather thin shell is flattened and ear-shaped. The surface is covered with uneven spiral cords, often almost obsolete, and strongly elevated undulations or lumps. This image shows five views of a H. kamtschatkana shell found in Baja California.

Bala shark

The bala shark (Balantiocheilos melanopterus) is a fish in the family Cyprinidae, and one of two species in the genus Balantiocheilos. It is found around the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo. It has a silver body with black margins on the dorsal, caudal, anal, and pelvic fins. It has big eyes which it uses to find and catch its prey. The bala shark has a maximum length of 35 cm (14 in). Bala sharks are found in midwater depths in large and medium-sized rivers and lakes. They feed on phytoplankton, but mostly on small crustaceans, rotifers, and insects and their larvae. The bala shark is listed as a vulnerable species by the IUCN Red List, having become rare or extinct in many river basins of its native range. However, large numbers of the species are bred in captivity and exported from Thailand for the aquarium trade. This bala shark was photographed at Karlsruhe Zoo in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Chlamys varia, also known as the variegated scallop, is a small bi-valve mollusc in the scallop family, Pectinidae. It occurs in the North Sea, the English Channel, the northeastern Atlantic Ocean and the Red Sea, living at depths of up to around 100 m along coastal rocky areas. It typically lives under boulders or among the holdfasts of seaweeds. The shell of Chlamys varia comes in a range of colours and variegated patterns including white, pink, red, orange, yellow, or purple, and anything in between. Both valves are convex, rounded or oval, and symmetrical except for the ears on either side of the umbo. The shell does not usually exceed 6 cm in length. This C. varia shell, with left and right valves shown, was originally found in the Adriatic Sea near Italy.

Nassarius arcularia

Nassarius arcularia, commonly known as the casket nassa or the little box dog whelk, is a species of sea snail in the Nassa mud snail or dog whelk family, Nassariidae. It is found in tropical and subtropical coastal waters across the world, inhabiting muddy areas close to the shoreline. The shell, which is very common, has a thickness of up to 3 centimetres (1.2 inches) and varies in form – for example, in the elongation of the whorls and the longitudinal folds – as well as in color, with some specimens entirely white while others have brown bands. The young of this species have folds and striae that are much more prominent. This composite photograph shows five different views of a N. arcularia shell, with a length of 2.2 centimetres (0.87 inches), that was collected in Madagascar.

Five views of a Viviparus georgianus shell

Viviparus georgianus, commonly known as the banded mystery snail, is a species of large freshwater snail in the family Viviparidae, the river snails. It is native to North America, generally found from the northeastern United States to Florida and the Gulf of Mexico, and thrives in eutrophic lentic environments such as lakes, ponds and some low-flow streams. The snail has two distinct sexes and reproduces more than once in a lifetime, with females laying eggs singly in albumen-filled capsules. It feeds on diatom clusters found on silt and mud substrates, but it may also require the ingestion of some grit to be able to break down algae. This image shows five views of a 2.1 cm high (0.83 in) V. georgianus shell, originally collected in the U.S. state of Georgia and now in the collection of the State Museum of Natural History Karlsruhe in Germany.
