If, for some reason, you are unable to fix a problem yourself, feel free to ask someone else to do it. Wikipedia has a vibrant community of contributors who have a wide range of skills and specialties, and many of them would be glad to help. As well as the wiki community pages there are IRC Channels, where you are more than welcome to ask for assistance.

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. The only thing that's changed is that you will no longer have them marked as minor by default.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you are familiar with the contents of WP:MINOR, and believe that it is still beneficial to the encyclopedia to have all your edits marked as such by default, then this discussion will give you the details you need to continue with this functionality indefinitely. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

@Animalparty: Thank you for the assessment. I created the page after finding that Word document as a citation I used in the U.M. School of Law article, which had an unsourced 20,000 square feet (1,900 m2) figure (the source states it’s actually 20,060 square feet (1,864 m2)).
I, too, disprefer citations to Word documents and to unnecessary secondary sources. I likely wouldn’t have considered using it if it weren’t (i) published by a law school; (ii) published for compliance with American Bar Association regulations; and (iii) the only source I found for the library’s size after a reasonably thorough search.
Please do let me know if I’d missed a better citation, and thank you again for your feedback.

@Animalparty: I just noticed that {{convert}} thought that 20,000 ft² was an approximation: the larger figure of 20,060 ft² actually displays a smaller converted figure (1,864 m²) than the original did (1,900 m²). (!)

Concerto

Hi LLarson,

Regarding your recent edits of that article, I suggest that instead of editing the article as a whole, you begin by pruning and toning down overblown language in the article, of which there is a lot, as you noticed.

On issues regarding the appreciation of individual composers and pieces, I suggest that you be cautious. For example, it's really true that one of Bruch's violin concertos (No. 1) is overwhelmingly more popular than the other two. If in doubt, you could look up specific WP articles.

If in a version you edit I see a relatively small number of places I disagree, I will re-edit those myself by hand. If there are too many , I hope not, I'd have to revert again. Marlindale (talk) 01:42, 12 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ideas for HTwiki articles: New York City Department of Education

One of the articles I'd really like to see started on HTWiki (not a full article, a stub will do) is the New York City Department of Education (Haitian name: ht:Depatman Edikasyon vil Nouyòk) - It's an important agency for any New Yorker with children, and the NYCDOE has a Haitian Creole website for immigrant families. Queens Library also posts info in Haitian.

If you want I can get a list of schools with large Haitian populations. Maybe having HTwiki articles on these topics will attract US-born Haitians to HTWiki.

Do you know enough Haitian to start these on HTwiki? If not, do you have friends who can? WhisperToMe (talk) 08:32, 24 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

On Saturday April 30, 2016, in conjunction with a global campaign, the Guggenheim will host its fourth Wikipedia edit-a-thon — or, #guggathon — to enhance Wikipedia's coverage of modern and contemporary artists from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and to counter geocultural systemic bias on Wikipedia.

The Guggenheim aims to further the goals of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative, and build on the model of campaigns like the Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the Guggenheim: Women in Architecture, Wikipedia Asian Month, and Art+Feminism.

New and experienced editors are welcome. The event will include a training session for participants who are new to Wikipedia and Wikipedia specialists will be on hand to provide basic instruction and editing support.

Hi, and sorry for the seven-month-late reply; it's been a long time since I last logged in.

Regarding what you asked in this message, I applied the rules stated on the Arcaicam Esperantom article and its Esperanto-language version:

  • The verbal ending for present tense and second person singular is -as, so "Patrom nosam, cuyu estas in Chielom", not "Patrom nosam, cuyu estu in Chielom". Estu (singular only; the plural is estuy) means the same as in actual Esperanto, so that line would be commanding God to be in Heaven, rather than claiming that He is there.
  • The case used to express direction of motion is the dative, not the accusative, so "nosin ned conducu in Tentod", not "nosin ned conducu in Tenton". You can find this rule on the aforementioned Esperanto version of the Arcaicam Esperantom article:

Hi LLarson, you were right on the border for the guidelines on this, but I think you can use this responsibly. Please keep in mind, that you should always seek consensus and be willing to revert (or accept a revert) for anything slightly controversial on protected templates or modules. The hardest part of that is when YOU are the person who wants a change, knowing when and where to just do it vs discuss it first. One of the best ways to help is to patrol and watchlist the TPERT table linked above - where you can help process other's edit requests. Cullman Education and Research Building at the Museum of Modern Art, 4 West 54th Street, on Saturday, March 11, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for an all-day communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to art and feminism. There will be childcare, snacks, multiple trainings and panel discussions. People of all gender identities and expressions welcomed and encouraged to attend.

This year’s edit-a-thon kicks off at 10:00 a.m. with a conversation about information activism with writer Joanne McNeil and Data & Society Research Institute Fellow Zara Rahman, moderated by Kimberly Drew, the social media manager for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, creator of the Tumblr “Black Contemporary Art,” and the person behind @museummammy on Instagram. The Met is excited to make available over 375,000 images of public domain artworks for contribution to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse collection onsite and remotely. The event is a key marker too of The Metropolitan Museum of Art's first Wikimedian-in-Residence program, with resident Richard Knipel (User:Pharos), along with Wikimedia NYC. Join us for an evening of social Wikipedia editing at the Museum of Modern Art Library's third annual Wiki Loves Pride Edit-a-thon, during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to LGBT art, culture and history.

All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required.

Themes for this event include art related to HIV/AIDS activism and on LGBTQ artists of the African Diaspora as part of the Black Lunch Table project.

Hello, LLarson. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Upcoming changes to wikitext parsing

There will be some changes to the way wikitext is parsed during the next few weeks. It will affect all namespaces. You can see a list of pages that may display incorrectly at Special:LintErrors. Since most of the easy problems have already been solved at the English Wikipedia, I am specifically contacting tech-savvy editors such as yourself with this one-time message, in the hope that you will be able to investigate the remaining high-priority pages during the next month.

There are approximately 10,000 articles (and many more non-article pages) with high-priority errors. The most important ones are the articles with misnested tags and table problems. Some of these involve templates, such as infoboxes, or the way the template is used in the article. In some cases, the "error" is a minor, unimportant difference in the visual appearance. In other cases, the results are undesirable. You can see a before-and-after comparison of any article by adding ?action=parsermigration-edit to the end of a link, like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Foss?action=parsermigration-edit (which shows a difference in how {{infobox ship}} is parsed).

@TonyBallioni: I appreciate your taking the time to address this, and I understand how it could seem like I’m reverting Beyond My Ken on different pages, the history you mention looks damning, but I edited the passage after receiving an email about this revision, the first in a week.
However, because Beyond My Ken (i) reverted my edit, which I restored, because (ii) it is their revisions now standing at both Bir Tawil and Commissioners’ Plan of 1811, and because (iii) Beyond My Ken’s edit summaries are aggressive (“stop fucking around”) and tangential to their preferences (“Better before” or “previous wording was better”), it is I who feels bullied.
The reason I’ve gone elsewhere to edit, rather than back to the Commissioners’ Plan Talk page, is because I wasn’t being heard. I had no idea Beyond My Ken edited, and felt proprietorship, over an article – Bir Tawil – that I’ve been editing for years.
In addition to hiding from Beyond My Ken’s reversions of mostly uncontroversial (but completely policy- and guideline-compliant) edits on the Commissioners’ Plan article, I feel that I’m effectively being asked to check each article’s history before I edit it.
More, Beyond My Ken didn’t assume good faith when they reached out to you and accused me of harassment after my lengthy edits on the Commissioners’ Plan Talk page, and they didn’t assume good faith when I recently reached out to them there for their opinion on a specific subject, and then repeated my request, but wasn’t answered. This occurred at the same time I was being accused of harassment on this Talk page above.
Beyond My Ken, who in a recent reversion said that “choices that [Beyond My Ken] made in writing the article are now precedent, and stand”, engages in behavior incompatible with consensus-building. Meanwhile, Beyond My Ken has failed to assume good faith by referring to my work as “entirely stupid, pedantic, and picayune”. At Wikipedia, we are implored to treat each other professionally. Beyond My Ken’s characterization that they’re being victimized, while engaging in bellicose editing and with careless summaries, makes Wikipedia worse for everyone. If Beyond My Ken feels goaded by their edits being undone, I would respectfully request that they consider using the undo tool more judiciously and with more summary than “better before” and “stop fucking around”. Perhaps they could consider partial reversions?

I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus, rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Points to note:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made;
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.
