Hi Jay, OTRS received a complaint about spam on this page. Apparently since the page was userfied under your userspace, it's been the target of spammers. I reverted to a pre-spam version, but if you aren't actively working on the page, please consider deleting it. Thanks, --Versageek 18:14, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

HTTP 1.2

The HTTP 1.2 stuff mentioned on the current Wikipedia page was a few proposals that never went anywhere. The article I linked discusses a few things that would be very useful in HTTP, and a few more things that may or may not be useful. I would recommend that these ideas be incorporated into any proposed HTTP 1.2 standard. However, there is, as far as I know, no current or proposed HTTP 1.2 spec; thus there is no browser support. There's only three ways forward that I can see:

  1. Someone gets behind the relatively minor changes that I suggested in my article, and pushes it through the IETF/W3C
  2. Some great idea comes along, and there's a big consensus that HTTP needs revision to support it, and the changes I mention get to piggyback on these
  3. Software vendors begin supporting non-standard extensions, and these extensions gain widespread support

Naturally I'm not recommending the third option.

HTH,

Wiktionary

Cbrown suggested I could leave you this text. I'd like to suggest a press release about the double event of last week-end: both en.wiktionary and fr.wiktionary have reached 1 000 000 entries. This release could be along these lines (please, update the xxxxx and improve as needed):

1 000 000!

Wiktionary is a Wikimedia foundation project. Its objective is to define all words of all languagus, with definitions in all languages. It's the language dictionary associated to Wikipedia. Wiktionaries already exist in xxxxxxx languages. Most active ones are the ones in English and in French ("Wiktionnaire"), which both just reached 1 000 000 entries!

Wiktionary needs new volonteers. Everyone interested in words (of any languages) would be welcome.

French version:

1 000 000 !

"Downfall" issues

The paragraph I removed and you reinstated has a lot of problems; besides being clumsily written, it is subjective (who's to say Ganz looks older than Hitler) and it is unclear to me why it is important enough to be included. That said, I apologize for not leaving an editor summary. Treybien 19:35, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

David Blair: Binoculars on the Titanic

Hi Jay, I can't actually remember where I read that information as it's been so long, well over 15 years since I came across it in my Titanic readings. I've read books by Geoffrey Marcus("The Maiden Voyage"), Wyn Craig Wade, and of course Walter Lord not to mention Don Lynch's "Titanic An Illustrated History" as well as Eaton & Haas's "Falling Star", a book about the White Star Line. I've always remembered that Blair 'took' the field glasses with him rather than someone locking the field glasses away and I remembered that Blair owned the field glasses which makes sense for him to take them and Lightoller making note to get a pair in NY. If the field glasses had been consciously locked away, but still on the ship, they could've forced open the locker or drawer etc and retrieved the glasses as they were that important in the navigation of the ship. In a 1994 expedition to the wreck site RMS Titanic, the organisation that has rights to the wreck, brought up a pair of field glasses from the debris field, obviously some well to do passenger had them. But the Titanic's officers would've been too vane to ask rich passengers to borrow a pair of 'nocs because the officers(hence the White Star) were supposed to be running a tight brand new ship. Undated template

I noticed your question on Wikipedia talk:Signatures#Template for timestamp only. I added it there for the benefit of others and here for your benefit, since it's been half a month. {{Undated}} has what you're looking for, if you haven't found it already. I saw it on the "Unsigned Templates" on the right of {{Unsigned}}. Revelian (talk) 14:23, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi. Sorry to bother you --

Hi. Sorry to bother you -- I was wondering if someone, you perhaps, could remove vandalism [[1]]. (I noticed you were active at the article.) Thanks. Bus stop (talk) 13:22, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

Replied here. Jay (talk) 13:34, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
I don't know if I am right, but I don't see any constructive significance to what was added. I am referring to: "someone forgot "us"." In all truth, I don't know what that means. Vandalism might be too strong of a word. I retract that. Bus stop (talk) 13:55, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

Too many power-happy editors here!

I have had my pages for "ewen chia" and "mike filsaime" deleted by someone I feel is just power happy and isn't familiar with the industry I write about. Just because someone isn't familiar with something doesn't mean that it is insignificant. The editor is Andyjsmith. Just look at his talk page to see our discussion. I think this is ridiculous. Is there anything that anyone can do to stop this madness? I could easily go around deleting things just because it is not important to me, but I don't want to be a jerk. Thanks for your time.

StephenHenderson (talk) 19:15, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

I appreciate your professional response. It has cleared up some things for me. I will make use of my user page and get the articles right before trying to create the page.

Image permission problem with Image:Hard Kaur.jpg

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Hard Kaur.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the image (or other media file) agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the image to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the image has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the image's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Images lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. — neuro(talk) 19:55, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

The image was tagged on 11 March 2009 & the OTRS was not received, in fact, it appears that the time was extended on March 26 & April 2 & April 4 - that's why the image was deleted. It will be restored for a short time & if the OTRS isn't received it will be deleted again. Skier Dude (talk) 04:53, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
To see the extensions for OTRS you need to look at the "history" tab of the image. The talk page has been restored. Skier Dude (talk)

Online chats as "evidence"

Online chat messages, even worse than e-mails, are easily faked, and do not constitute useful evidence of permission. Generally, you need to get standard, written permission from rights holders; or the rights holders need to e-mail directly from their easily-verifiable home accounts. --Orange Mike | Talk 01:07, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

I generally make multiple edits for several reasons.

  • I generally edit different sections of the article, and not the same section. I find it too cumbersome to edit the whole article, and thus edit each section, and while inserting new sections, I add them to the end of the previous one, and save it and then go to edit the new one. I find this convinient to do so.
  • There are other reasons, but you may find them silly, so I won't bother with boring you with them.

Thank you for your suggestions, I'll try and preview wherever I can. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 09:32, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

Re: Friends reverts

Ironically, it's because Wikipedia isn't considered to be a reliable source. Otherwise, I could write that Friends has 500 seasons on that page and use it as a source. If you want that information to stay, it would be best to find a reliable external source; idealistically, that very channel's official website. Hope that helped, Corn.u.co.piaDisc.us.sion 11:53, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

Yes, we can use tertiary sources, but we cannot cite ourselves. If you want to re-add the information, you must add a reference which directly says that Channel 111 Hits airs Friends. Corn.u.co.piaDisc.us.sion 04:14, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
Well, I'm glad this worked out. I was hesitant to place a fact tag because Friends is a good article, and I don't want anything unsourced in there, but it may have been a better choice in the short-term. Cheers, Corn.u.co.piaDisc.us.sion 11:54, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Jay, thanks for comment. I'm new to wikipedia. So, in a List of firsts article I edited first "female siblings" on Mt Everest. Sure, "sisters" is realy nice word, I just didn't think about it :)... And, as about your 2nd question, were there any male siblings (brothers :) ) on MtEverest simultaneously answer is: i dont know! Note: A user space copy of this article has been deleted. "I would like to keep the work, even though it does not meet Wikipedias stupid notability guidelines" is not a reason for userfying: in fact it is a reason for not userfying, as an announcement that the user wishes to use userfication to get around deletion, not to work on the article. I think I've fixed it properly now. --Slashme (talk) 06:41, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

You just need to use the right template to indicate its copyright status, and add the required evidence. In this case it's easy, because it's a derived work from a GFDL picture with an OTRS ticket: the original has the required evidence to support its GFDL status, so we refer directly to that. I've also asked the person who deleted it to check the status to make sure that everything's OK. --Slashme (talk) 09:43, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear Jay,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chlopeck (talkcontribs) 22:59, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

Missing documentation of permission to use image

Hi. Could you please try to fix this issue (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Xerces_blue.jpg), because without proper documentation of the museums permission to use this image uploaded by you in 2003, it might be deleted in the future and leave Wikipedia without an image for this extinct species (the only recently extinct North American butterfly). A copy of a mail that includes the permission would be sufficient.--Dr. Günter Bechly (talk) 08:17, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

The article List of scientific constants named after people has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

per WP:LISTN - no indication of topic notability by reliable sources. See also WP:NOT.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. We noticed though that when you edited Shubhendra Shankar, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Orange County (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Request to Save Content From Deleted Submission

Hi Jay, a page I created has already been deleted from Wikipedia, but I want to save the content from it to use for a new draft. It was deleted due to conflicts of interest (I work for the organization) so I'd like to continue from the draft and have an editor proofread the new version. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Above_Average

Thank you!

An RfC that you may be interested in...

As one of the previous contributors to {{Infobox film}} or as one of the commenters on it's talk page, I would like to inform you that there has been a RfC started on the talk page as to implementation of previously deprecated parameters. Your comments and thoughts on the matter would be welcomed. Happy editing!

Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket/List of cricketers, a page you substantially contributed to, has been nominated for deletion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket/List of cricketers and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket/List of cricketers during the discussion but should not remove the miscellany for deletion template from the top of the page; such a removal will not end the deletion discussion. Moorsbus editing

Hello Jay,

Being new to Wikipedia, I managed to get all my edits deleted as a potential conflict of interest yesterday. Would it be possible for you to let me have the deleted material back, please, and I'll see what can be done with it? Thank you very much, (Friends of Moorsbus (talk) 14:19, 22 May 2015 (UTC))

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Regaining access to deleted page Great American Canyon Band

Hi there Jay. I'm hoping to gain access to a page I created under Great American Canyon Band. I'm a new user and this was my first page, I'm just learning the wiki requirements and formatting norms. I was directed to Wikipedia administrators willing to provide copies of deleted articles page that could grant me access to that deleted page - is that possible? I would like to make edits/additions and add more sources so that the band page is shown to be notable under the WP:BAND guidelines. Thanks! Sarahk.odo (talk) 22:34, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for checking in Jay. I'm currently edited the page under my user page where another admin placed it. I would like to save what I have and get help/input on the page before making it public. If I save the 'save page' will that allow admins to edit/advise before deleting the page? Thanks!Sarahk.odo (talk) 17:15, 24 November 2015 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Xerces blue.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Xerces blue.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 19:57, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
