Re: Invite for WikiProject Ethiopia
[edit]Hi Janweh! Thanks for the invite, but I doubt I'll be contributing much Ethiopia content in the foreseeable future: I'm not very active on Wikipedia any more. However, if people have questions about researching Ethiopia/Eritrean history & need help -- or access to pdf files -- I'm willing to help in that way, although I might be a little slow in responding. Best -- llywrch (talk) 22:36, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for the invite! Unfortunately I don't have very much free time to spend on Wikipedia. I'm planning to finish my work on updating Ethiopian administrative divisions and adding data from 2007 census but I'm not sure if I can add much more. There is actually huge work to be done with geography related articles about Ethiopia. I would be happy if you can find some Ethiopians to update some articles of different regions and zones as there are some governmental webpages of these regions and zones which are giving more information on Amharic, Oromia or some other local language. Anyway when I have finished my current work, hopefully for a next spring, I'll check about Ethiopian WikiProject again. Vatse (talk) 21:05, 29 December 2012 (UTC)
Regarding these two edits, you cannot modify the assessment manually. If you feel the article does not meet the good article criteria anymore, you may ask for a reassessment. I don't think it doesn't, however, as I was the one who significantly contributed to get it promoted. Concerning the tags you added to the parent article, both have been reverted, as Wikipedia is not a travel guide to have a detailed description of in-flight services, and the history section is fine the way it is, with a thorough description of the airline's history. Actually, I'm planning to expand it even more in the near future. You should discuss this kind of edits at the article's talk page or at WT:AIRLINE, specially when good articles are involved. Thanks.--Jetstreamer Talk 14:10, 29 December 2012 (UTC)
- I was under the impression each WikiProject had freedom to determine their own standards of quality and importance. Sure the GAR assessment determined it deserves a GA tag. But that tag is in the parent article. What I changed was the quality rating under WikiProject Ethiopia's banner which is used to categorize articles in our project.
- According to Wikipedia:WikiProject_Council/Guide#Article_tagging no-one owns this article. Although, you are correct about my placement of tags on the parent article. You cannot dictate what rating a project you are not a member of assigns to an article.
- I believe the History section is too long in structure and needs to be broken down into sections and expanded much further. The Airline is involved in a training and education program for pilots and engineers that supports airlines from the entire continent which is not even mentioned. The destinations section needs a little more detail and services section you mentioned could still expand without being a travel guide. I simply does not meet our projects standards for such an important article. I did not change the quality rating for any other project. Or remove the GA tag in the parent article. Explain to me why I am wrong to remove the GA assigned under the Wikipedia Ethiopia. አቤል ዳዊት (Janweh) (talk) 15:16, 29 December 2012 (UTC)
- Once an article has been reviewed for GA status, a bot tags it for all the projects involved appearing in the talk page. It's not a manual task. Separately, I never said I own the article. I've been around here on Wikipedia for six years more than you, so please don't try to explain me the basic guidelines and policies, as I'm well aware of them.--Jetstreamer Talk 15:36, 29 December 2012 (UTC)
- Show me a policy that says that a project cannot assign a rating according to the project's quality scale. አቤል ዳዊት (Janweh) (talk) 15:40, 29 December 2012 (UTC)
- I do review articles for GA status. I'm just telling you how things work. The only policies are these ones. All the rest are guidelines.--Jetstreamer Talk 15:49, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

Demographics of woredas
[edit]Regarding your edit I suggest to keep the data from 1994 census on different pages of Ethiopian administrative divisions. It would give the good idea how the size of population, ethnic groups, religion etc have changed during last ~20 years. All the updated articles have kept this data so far. Table sorting (List of ethnic groups in Ethiopia)
[edit]Hi, you could use {|class="wikitable sortable"
instead of {| class="wikitable"
. However I'm not sure if or how this would work where you've split the column headers, i.e. with numbers and percentages. See also Help:Table#Sorting and Help:Sorting. (Also, there are ways of formatting sort keys (like {{Sort}} and {{Dts}}) within each table cell, but I don't think you'd need them for this table.) Hope this helps, -- Gyrofrog (talk) 02:08, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks, I had figured out the first part. But when I used it, the foreign citizens and ethnic groups with missing info messed up the list. I am going to have to use {{Sort}} to make them stay at the bottom. አቤል ዳዊት (Janweh) (talk) 02:22, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Ethiopian Basketball Federation
[edit]Hello Janweh64,
I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Ethiopian Basketball Federation for deletion, because it doesn't appear to contain any encyclopedic content. Take a look at our suggestions for essential content in short articles to learn what should be included.
If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.
You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks, FrankDev (talk) 04:05, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

[edit]I have been on Wikipedia for nearly 7 years, I'm an Administrator, I know how to reference - using the templates as in-line cites is completely acceptable and extremely wide-spread. I cannot see why you cannot accept that. GiantSnowman 11:13, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
- Three reasons:
- It is stupid! Using these incomplete templates as in-line cites does not serve the intended purpose of citations. Websites change and time of access must also be recorded. Now templates like {{cite web}} and {{cite news}} is a different thing. Because they follow a standard form. If we want use a short notations. Then we must include a full citation in a separate references section. See Nikita_Khrushchev#References.
- You are indiscriminately remove carefully cited work.
- Frankly, I am appalled you would even mention that you are an Administrator as an argument. Because you are simply WRONG. Read this section Wikipedia:Citing_sources#Webpages — አቤል ዳዊት?(Janweh64) (talk) 11:26, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
- Response as follows:
- What additional information does your method add as opposed to mine? My method shows title, publisher, accessdate - just as yours does!
- No I am not removing any cited work, please retract that accusation.
- Breaking Wikipedia:Citing_sources#Webpages down, how are any of those applicable for a basic on-line database? My method shows title, publisher, accessdate - just as yours does! GiantSnowman 11:30, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
- Consistent citation style
- You did remove a citation from the lede without looking. here
- This edit removes the access date from two references. It is only here that you add an access date.
- Most maddening is the fact that this article had no established citation style until I started working on it. It contained several bare links. And by this version all that was missing was one retrieved date until you started messing with it oh great ADMINISTRATOR. And that is a violation of WP:CITEVAR: "Adding citation templates to an article that already uses a consistent system without templates, or removing citation templates from an article that uses them consistently"
- And last and funniest is that now, the article contains no External Links. This makes me believe you do not understand what people use that section for. — አቤል ዳዊት?(Janweh64) (talk) 12:07, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
- BTW I am reverting your edits. I plan on expanding this article and I refuse to follow your idiotic and lazy method. — አቤል ዳዊት?(Janweh64) (talk) 12:09, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
- Per WP:LEDE, "Apart from trivial basic facts, significant information should not appear in the lead if it is not covered in the remainder of the article" and it is generally held that the lede should not be referenced - it should be referenced in the body of the article. I strongly suggest you do NOT edit again, instead take it to the article talk page - if you do it could be interpreted as edit warring. You should also retract your personal attack of "idiotic and lazy." You have been here for 1 month - I have been here 7 years. Stow the arrogant attitude and accept that perhaps you don't know everything? GiantSnowman 12:16, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
- I also enjoy how you comment on "Consistent citation style" and yet used the '2013-01-21' accessdate even though '21 January 2013' style was already established. GiantSnowman 12:19, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
- I didn't say my work was perfect. "2013-01-21" is the default format used by WP:REFLINKS. But I had corrected that on many of the references generated by the app. For example, ref#8 and ref#9. Instead of correcting these mistakes what you have done change the whole inline citation. And now, I believe you are threatening me, when I have done nothing that you have not done yourself. Which is edit an article in a manner I believe best. Will you also block yourself? By my count you have already reverted four of my logical and well intentioned edits. Or are you above reproach? — አቤል ዳዊት?(Janweh64) (talk) 12:31, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
- I have not threatened you, and I apologise if it has come across that way. I simply stated that this is something for the article talk page; it is not dieal for you to say you are going to edit in a certain way when there is opposition to that method (just as it would be wrong for me to revert you again). I have not reverted you four times, please stop making baseless accusations. GiantSnowman 12:38, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
- OK about the talk page. But it is not baseless: 1, 2, 3 and 4. Only one of those could perhaps not be considered a revert. But to be honest, I was doing exactly the same. That is why I stopped when I did. But look where that leaves us. If you don't mind, I am going to add the external links back. Leaving the citations like you left them.
- But I still think you are mistaken in their use. I have looked at many articles where they are transcluded and have not found a single instance where they are used as a reference. I believe this is because they hide the url. Unlike a {{cite web|url=http:/www.... from which a bot can read easily retrieve a link. And many apps used to edit and check references relies on an exposed link to work. One of which is the WP:REFLINKS which I was using to verify this article. Take a look here for example. Thierry Henry is a featured article that uses a {{FIFA player}} in its external link but not as a reference, while it does reference both FIFA competition record and NFT. Over and over again you will find the templates used in external links and not as references. Because in the end they were intended as sports external link templates. They are not a substitute for a properly formated citation. A citation not only has all the information required but lists it in proper order and with proper punctuation. It does not use words like at or ndash. It follows a strict standard as found in a guide like MLA. These templates do not. — አቤል ዳዊት?(Janweh64) (talk) 13:51, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
- Keeping the refs as I have them, and also adding them as ELs is a fair compromise. If you want, I can show you hundreds of articles where databases (NFT, Soccerbase, FIFA & Soccerway etc. are used as an in-line cite, there's definitely precedent fot them. GiantSnowman 14:12, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
- I would like to see some. I doubt they have passed peer-review. — አቤል ዳዊት?(Janweh64) (talk) 14:28, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

Kenny McLean is a WP:GA that immediately springs to mind (as I started it). GiantSnowman 14:36, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
- Assuming ref#29 is a mistake that will be fixed, are you telling me having the lone ref#30 out of format is beneficial to the article. It clearly stands out. — አቤል ዳዊት?(Janweh64) (talk) 14:46, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
- How is it detrimental to the article? What actual difference is there between
- Kenny McLean at Soccerbase, retrieved on 21 January 2013
- and
- "Career stats". Soccerbase. Retrieved 21 January 2013.
- Other than, you know, taking much longer to write and taking up more bytes? GiantSnowman 14:53, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
- Besides the reason I have stated above, Aesthetics. But what is gained by not properly formating it?
- Properly it should be:
- "Kenny McLean". Football Stats. Soccerbase. Retrieved 21 January 2013.
{{cite web}}
: External link in
(help)|publisher=
- See how everything on the left column of references looks. You can easily pick out what is not properly formatted on the right:20,22,24,26-30 and 25 is a deadlink BTW. This is the type of stuff people should and do look at when an article is considered for FA. All I was trying to do was begin articles with a consistent format from the beginning instead of having to fix things later, which takes a lot of time. But I have a match to watch can't argue about this all day. If you don't see the difference, a difference that is define in WP guidelines, then there is no point in me try to convince you. — አቤል ዳዊት?(Janweh64) (talk) 15:27, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
- Wikipedia doesn't do aesthetics, hence why WP:MOSFLAG etc. exists. Your referencing is also incorrect e.g.
work=Football Stats
is not accurate. GiantSnowman 15:32, 21 January 2013 (UTC)- Again, what is gained by not formatting properly as per Wikipedia:CITATION.— አቤል ዳዊት?(Janweh64) (talk) 15:44, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
- Again, what is lost by using the templates? You save time and space by doing so. GiantSnowman 15:47, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
- But if I want to take the time to do them properly, why would you change them back?— አቤል ዳዊት?(Janweh64) (talk) 15:56, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
- Don't take it personally. GiantSnowman 16:05, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Contests
[edit]User:Dr. Blofeld has created Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/Contests. The idea is to run a series of contests/editathons focusing on each region of Africa. He has spoken to Wikimedia about it and $1000-1500 is possible for prize money. As someone who has previously expressed interest in African topics, would you be interested in contributing to one or assisting draw up core article/missing article lists? He says he's thinking of North Africa for an inaugural one in October. If interested please sign up in the participants section of the Contest page, thanks.♦ --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:26, 21 July 2016 (UTC)
Hello, Janweh64. I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you started, Judas steer, for deletion because I don't think it meets our criteria for inclusion. If you don't want the article deleted:
- edit the page
- remove the text that looks like this:
{{proposed deletion/dated...}}
- save the page
Also, be sure to explain why you think the article should be kept in your edit summary or on the article's talk page. If you don't do so, it may be deleted later anyway.
You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. TonyBallioni (talk) 00:26, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
- Sounds like moving it to wiktionary is a good idea. Thanks --— አቤል ዳዊት?(Janweh64) (talk)
Invite to the African Destubathon
[edit]Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most geography, wildlife and women articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing, whether it's a river in Malawi, a Nigerian footballer, or a South African civil rights activist, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. For those of you who signed up to the North African contest, that will hopefully be held in the new year. Thanks. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:11, 6 October 2016 (UTC)

Copying within Wikipedia requires proper attribution
[edit] Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from State-owned enterprise into List of government-owned companies of Ethiopia. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution
. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. The attribution has been provided for this situation, but if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, please provide attribution for that duplication. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. If you are the sole author of the prose that was moved, attribution is not required. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 14:15, 12 January 2017 (UTC)

Canadian Base Ball Association
[edit]From page 114 of the journal article: "The exciting news for baseball in Canada that year was the formation of the Canadian Base Ball Association." The rest of the paragraph makes clear that the year in question is 1864, as it refers to a game played on September 22 that was mentioned in an October 1 news account. The link you left on my page (page 104 of Humber) refers to the National Association of Base Ball Players in the U.S. and the National League (which was founded in 1876), but not any Canadian organizations. I don't recall seeing anything in the source about a name change in the organization, and a quick Google search didn't reveal any hits discussing Shuttleworth and the Association of Baseball Players. Since Humber's article is the definitive source on Shuttleworth's life, I'm comfortable that he got the name right. Giants2008 (Talk) 02:14, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

cs1 template data
[edit]You recently edited Template:Cite news/doc, Template:Cite journal/doc, and Template:Cite book/doc. Perhaps you meant to write: "Requires \"http://...\" or \"https://...\" prefixes"?
http://
and https://
is the 'scheme' portion of a url perhaps that is a better term to use. Also, cs1|2 supports the protocol-relative (//
) scheme.
—Trappist the monk (talk) 12:47, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
Thank you, How about "Requires either \"//...\" or \"http://...\" or \"https://...\" schemes". BTW these edits are toward a suggestion here. Trying to help WMF.— አቤል ዳዊት?(Janweh64) (talk) 13:23, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
- One discussion in one place, please.
-
- My only interest is that the template data are technically correct so I leave it to you to make that decision (though I would suggest that the protocol relative scheme be listed last and perhaps somehow include that term 'protocol relative'). It occurs to me to note, that the those three schemes are not the only allowable schemes – some of the other common schemes are listed at Help:CS1_errors#Check_.7Curl.3D_value. Again, I leave it to you to determine how best to write that.
-
- Alas, I have a very low opinion of template data as a documentation tool and of the visual editor itself. Editors who contribute to Help talk:Citation Style 1 have been chastised in the past for editing the template data so many of us will no longer touch that.
-
- —Trappist the monk (talk) 13:57, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
- I will go with Requires schemes of the type \"http://...\" or maybe even the protocol relative scheme \"//...\"— አቤል ዳዊት?(Janweh64) (talk) 14:28, 5 February 2017 (UTC)

- @Winged Blades of Godric: I have made significant changes, addressed your concerns that the references were mere mentions, and found new sources that went into detail on the subject and his work. I listed them in a section in your talk page. I don't know why it was posted there when I asked for a review. I understand though you may be busy.
