Good work on Judith Newman[edit] Thanks for all your work on Judith Newman. Now it reads like an encyclopedia article rather than a press release. But it's obvious that Newman is notable, so I was happy to contribute. BTW, I thought that Newman's article in the NYT was poorly researched, particularly with regard to her statements about paid editors - she obviously did not talk to any really experienced editors here, or they could have explained to her why paid editing is a very bad idea. And, I find it very annoying that journalists like Newman, who have some understanding of our editorial process, and who use Wikipedia constantly, think it's fun to criticize us so broadly, when we get so much right and are putting together one of the greatest free resources in the world. Hi Lisachinny (talk), I moved Cherub to the mainspace, although I deleted that they were associated with MGMT and Chromeo -- I didn't see how they were associated. Please feel free to re-add it if there's a legitimate reason to do so (and it can be sourced). I also changed the wording re: their album from "it will be released" to it is "scheduled" to be released, as release dates can slip. I declined Magic Man. I think it's WP:TOOSOON. Hi Jawillia (talk), I know how you feel -- I've had a few articles repeatedly declined. Try not to be discouraged -- you have done a good job. Creating an article can be difficult, and sometimes it's just a matter of editing, persevering, and editing some more. I'm glad that I've been of some help The problem with the article remains the tone. Try including the band members in one paragraph, and don't include more than a sentence about each of them, and reduce the sentence to relevant points only. When you list the events, consider including only the two most prestigious -- Carnegie Hall and the Tree Lighting Ceremony -- as otherwise it seems like a laundry list of accomplishments. The overall issue is that the article sometimes reads like a press release. Even though it's not your intention, in places the article is written in a promotional style, i.e.: "Having once been laughed at in his audition for the music department at the University of Central Florida, Fernando Varela has now performed in 31 countries across the globe." It may be a fact, but it's got a point of view, and we need to be neutral. Can you go back through the article and rewrite it with your focus strictly on maintaining a straightforward, unbiased perspective? The problem with the article is that his notability needs to be demonstrated through reliable, independent sources that cover David and his career extensively. They can't be in any way related to David. Can you find articles about him in newspapers, journals, magazines, or books? They don't have to be in English - other languages are allowed. The formatting of the article also needs some work, and I'll be glad to help you with that, but we need to get over the notability hurdle first. Ping me when you've had a chance to add sources! Hey again, VerneuilDidier (talk). I think you're still short on notability - the articles are great, but the coverage needs to be more extensive, and IMDb isn't considered a reliable source. BUT - I was looking at David's French article, and there are a lot of citations/sources. I'm not a French speaker, so it's difficult for me to tell for sure -- but will you go through them and see if they provide more than a couple of paragraphs about David, and that they're from reliable, independent sources? Hi Didier (talk • contribs) - once again, apologies for the delay. I just tried to do some clean up on the article, but I'm afraid that I don't know Opera well enough to do it competently. Unless every performance you reference is noteworthy, I would suggest you pick out the most significant to list specifically, and summarize the rest. ("He performed in (country)(country) and (country), and sang roles including (name) (name) and (name)". You're looking to include information that's encyclopedic, so, also -- find the specific locations where the performances were - writing France is too general. So is Florida. Hi TalkEnt (talk, The references need to be from independent sources. The two that you've used aren't independent - one is a press release, and the other is Gary's site. In order to establish notability, you need to show that Gary's been written about extensively by independent, reliable sources. WP:N. Also, since you're writing so much about his life, you need to use inline citations so that the content can be verified. This is particularly important when you're writing about a living person. See WP:VERIFY. Also, please take a look at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons. I'm familiar with Gary, and there's a lot about him online. If you do some digging, you'll find it, and you can construct a great article based on what you find via reliable sources. Good luck! Hi 71.239.108.56 (talk), The press is really important here, because April doesn't meet the criteria for notability per WP:ENTERTAINER: Has had significant roles in multiple notable films, television shows, stage performances, or other productions. Has a large fan base or a significant "cult" following. Has made unique, prolific or innovative contributions to a field of entertainment But..."A person is presumed to be notable if he or she has received significant coverage in multiple published[3] secondary sources which are reliable, intellectually independent of each other,[4] and independent of the subject." You wrote that she's on the cover of the first Canadian Maxim; can you link to that article? (If it was just a cover shot, it's not helpful.) MTV and Viacom aren't independent, since they're writing about a show that airs on their own network. The coverage needs to be extensive, so mentions aren't helpful. Can you do deeper searches and see what else you can find? Feature stories? The format for Melanie Iglesias is fine, but the referencing on her article is pretty weak! To include a photo, you need to be a registered user. If you create an account, you can upload a photo. I writing you in regards to an article I have been trying to add to WikiPedia for some time now. The article is about a band named "The Marshmallow Overcoat."

I purchased one of the CDs at local record store and wanted to learn more about them. I tried WikiPedia and found numerous references to the band on entries for "Barry Sutton," "The Chesterfield Kings," "The Sound Explosion," "Walkingseeds," "A Psychedelic Psauna," and "The La's." Yet there was no entry for the band themselves. So I created the article and it was reject as advertising and having plagerized content. So I rewrote the article trying to mirror the style used for other bands of the same genre. I even contacted the bands record label, Purple Cactus/Garage Nation, to see about adding a release to their pages to allow for WikiPedia usage rights and I was surprised that they did. They even had the founder of the band, Tim Gassen, contact me and he provided me with some press material - it even turned out that he wrote a reference book about these bands called "The Knights of Fuzz" and he graciously sent me a digital copy of the book to help me in my seemingly futile quest.

Would it help if the article was renamed from the proper "The Marshmallow Overcoat" to the casual "Marshamallow Overcoat?" The articles I mentioned above all list the band as just "Marshmallow Overcoat."

Hi Fred (talk), The article's really good. Thorough, informative, neutral, well written. The problem is that notability hasn't been established -- you need multiple independent sources that cover Marshmallow Overcoat extensively. I think if you do some more digging you'll find them. Since the band was active in the late 80s, some of the press might not be available online. Maybe ask Tim or someone at the label if they have the press archives anywhere? References don't have to be available online -- you just need the publication name, the article title, the author, the date, (and the page number, if it's available). If the band's name was Marshmallow Overcoat, you should use that as the title of the article. (Always sounds weird to me when bands don't use "the." But since we're going for accuracy here, Marshmallow Overcoat it is.) Hope I've been of some help. Happy editing, and thanks for working on the article. And yes, it's ok to use the same reference twice, but it should be formatted so that rather than the reference appearing twice, it's noted that it's used multiple times with a,b,c, etc.

I'm not confident that accepting the article would be appropriate -- it's outside my area of expertise --- and having an article deleted is more of a drag than having it declined! I'm going to try and get another reviewer to look at it post haste. Thanks for your patience. Julie

Brand new editor here (so please be gentle :). My understanding of the guidelines for music is that, once an artist has a single on a national chart, notability is established. The original article mentioned this chart position (though the citation didn't point to quite the right place), so I'm puzzled as to why it was declined.

I've taken a first stab at adding release information, fixing links, and combining the declined article with another one for the same band (which got speedily deleted a couple times because it didn't establish notability). Please let me know if there's anything else that should be done to get this article ready for prime time.

Hi Raffishtenant (talk). Nice job given that you're a new editor...any chance you were coached by Lisa Chin (talk)? Um. You seem to have a similar style. Not that it matters -- she's a good editor, as are you. The criteria states that appearing on a national chart indicates the subject may be notable. I don't necessarily think that's true in this case, given that Columbia has a very effective promotion department, and a lot of artists (notable or not) end up on the alternative/Sirius charts. However, there's more press than what you initially included -- can you add a couple more references? For example, this one works: I Know It's Not Cool, But It Helps To Establish Notability. I'm removing Postal Service from the info box - Magic Man don't appear to be associated with the band. They're just compared to them. (Another editing tic ala Lisa Chin! Smiley face.) To me, "associated" indicates a significant relationship -- if you can reference that they've worked together, etc., feel free to add it back. So I'm new to wikipedia and I want to write an article about Mark Macias (I am not him but I know him personally). I originally submitted a draft about his firm MaciasPR but upon reading your feedback I realized his firm isn't notable enough but HE is (btw thanks for that clarification).

So I typed 'Mark Macias' into wiki, it said an article doesn't currently exist for him, so I clicked I wanted to write one, I wrote it, submitted, and it went up instantly without undergoing any review. Isn't there something wrong with that? I thought it needs to be reviewed before it goes up? And right after this happened I got a message saying my account is nominated for deletion.

I'm clearly a novice in the wiki world so maybe I did something wrong unintentionally, but I then submitted a draft for the same article (Mark Macias) that was actually submitted to be reviewed.

Can we take down the unreviewed page somehow? How does the unreviewed article vs. submitted draft thing work out?

@212access: (talk page stalker) First, do not blank other editors' talk pages. In fact, you should not remove your own comments after you make them. The Articles for Creation WikiProject is meant to be used by IPs (unregistered accounts) and new users to draft articles. After four days and several edits, you can make an article like Mark Macias on your own without approval. There's nothing wrong with that. Accordingly, I've declined Draft:Mark Macias because it's now superfluous. You can nominate that draft for speedy deletion or simply abandon it. Be advised, the reviewers at WikiProject AfC help new editors so that drafts stand better than a 50/50 chance in case someone nominates it for deletion. Your new article exists but it could be nominated for deletion so I recommend you continue to improve it, especially by adding more independent and reliable sources so you can make a case for general notability. I searched the subject, didn't find him Bryan Kest, wrote the article based on the prompts, and published it, thinking I was submitting a draft. I panicked until I realized that the article was neutral and properly sourced and wasn't going to get deleted. It probably happens a lot. That said, you should do some more work on the Mark Macias article, as Chris suggested -- the references are weak. The only one that's valid is from KPHO, and you need multiple references to establish notability - I don't think the article would survive a deletion nomination as it currently stands. Hi Liz Emac494 (talk), This issue with the article isn't the verification, it's the notability. Here's the criteria for musicians: WP:NMUSIC. If he doesn't meet the criteria, you can establish notability via multiple, non-trivial, published works appearing in sources that are reliable, not self-published, and are independent from the musician or ensemble itself. It's not a matter of demonstrating notability to me -- I just volunteer at AfC - I have the same authority on Wikipedia as you do. Notability needs to be apparent to readers, and that's done through references that appear as footnotes to the article. (If you decide to stick around and get some experience, Wikiproject AfC is a great way to contribute, and help is desperately needed.) I'd go through his credits and note which of his songs charted - between the verification at AllMusic and the charts (which are generally available) you may be able to establish notability based on this, from WP:NMUSIC: The following factors suggest that a song or single may be notable, though a standalone article should still satisfy the aforementioned criteria. I'm in the process of editing the article for Jon Stokes which you rejected on the grounds that the references were not adequate being not about him specifically, but about the organisations he is associated with. I just wondered what the difference is between this draft article and the one for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Billsberry ? They both work in the same field and I cannot see that Jon Billsberry's references meet your criteria either, and yet his article has been accepted... Is it the fact that he is better embedded into Wikipedia, being listed for example, as an alumni of a particular university?

Hi Sophie, (talk • contribs), I reviewed Jon Stokes article over a year ago - if I were reviewing it today I would have declined it for notability, not for sourcing. There are specific criteria for academics: WP:PROF. Jon Billsbury's article wasn't "accepted" - the author of the article (presumably Jon Billsbury based on user name) didn't go through the review process. He/she published the article him/herself. (It was in 2009.) I've tagged the article accordingly - notability hasn't been established, and the references are inadequate. That said, there are thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of articles on Wikipedia that are subpar -- that they exist means only that no one has noticed and/or had the desire to improve them (or nominate them for deletion if they can't be brought up to standard). Hi Timedborg (talk), I wish I could be of more help, but I'm still not seeing enough coverage to establish that Brielle meets the criteria required. WireImage and Getty ARE great, but they're only photos, and don't provide the extensive coverage that we need. (Yes, I'm familiar with both services.) I did an extensive search, and didn't find any appropriate citations. Another reviewer might find the Post Journal links sufficient, in combination with the other references used, but I think the article on Brielle as it stands right now would be susceptible to deletion. Hey again Tim (talk) and sorry for the delay. I've been off Wiki since last week. There's specific criteria regarding the inclusion of musicians in Wikipedia - see WP:NMUSIC. Valid references need to be independent, from reliable sources, and provide extensive coverage. Specifically, I declined the article because of the following issues with the references. (Please note that 2-3 brief and fluffy paragraphs don't validate notability.) 1. Federal registration doesn't establish notability 2. Post Journal - valid, but local (same article used three times) - Jamestown has a population of 30,000. 3. High school record - not extensive, and doesn't support that she's an entertainer or musician. 4/5: See above re Post Journal 6. Not extensive coverage, and this award doesn't establish notability 7/8/9: The video's inclusion on a music video site doesn't establish notability; virtually every music video site endeavors to include all available videos 10/11: Written by Danielle; not independent 12. Mention only 13. Video post; editorial coverage is trivial 14. Valid 15. Trivial coverage via questionable source 16. Not extensive coverage 17. Interview, not considered independent, trivial editorial coverage 18. Not extensive coverage 19. Not extensive coverage 20/21: Getty references are simply photos. They don't provide extensive coverage, and Brielle's inclusion doesn't establish notability. Getty's business is selling photos -- the images aren't curated and don't involve any kind of editorial process. In some cases, it's because they were never put up for review or were published before the review system existed. Frequently those articles will ultimately be nominated for deletion. One more thing - when you say "we have plenty of social systems in place..." etc. it implies that you're associated with Brielle, and thus have a conflict of interest. Please read WP:COI for guidance. Again, I'm sorry that I can't be of more help. I don't believe she meets the criteria as of yet. But you need to rewrite it so that it's easier to understand, formal in tone, neutral, and referenced (to establish notability and support the assertions of the article). For example, your lead as it currently stands is: "CAVS has not been an overnight success but was actually conceived way back at the end of the 60s by its creator Fran Quigley. So this company would have the longest standing roots of all within the Audio Visual industry now into its 5th decade." To be appropriate for Wikipedia, it should say something more like: "Corporate Audio Visual Services (CAVS) is an audio visual company based in Dublin, Ireland. One of the first companies of its kind, CAVS was founded in (year) by Fran Quigley." Then you need to add a reference which will show why CAVS should be in an encyclopedia, and verify that it was one of the first AV companies. Please take some time with writing a better draft. It'll help you with the construction of the article. But you may first want to look for references -- the article won't be published unless you can establish notability, which can be a challenge. The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

Also, as you suggested, I removed all listings of compilation and re-issue albums from her discography, but with two exceptions: I thought that Deodato's Greatest Hits might be a notable mention, as well as the Stick It movie soundtrack, which even though is credited to "Various Artists" it's not really a compilation album. Also, in the bio section I mentioned a couple of notable compilation albums she is part of because that is one of the criteria for notability listed in WP:Music guideline. Last thing-- in the bio I make several mentions that Camille is credited by her single first name (as opposed to Camille Filfiley). I think this is important because there is a Wikipedia listing for a Camille (singer) who is French but became notable well after the Camille I'm writing about. Just trying to establish that Camille Filfiley should be listed with the title Camille (vocalist).

Hi..appreciate your getting to the article (I know you all are swamped). Will you help me in y he area of what needs certification? And can it be done with youtube videos of certain events/info stated? Plus...info I have done phone interviews with band mates and those Watson worked with and gotten verification and information may that be used as certification? These are events...many from almost 40 years ago before the information age and youtube or computers. I have seen some articles on the Internet regarding some of the information..may the be referenced and used to certify? Also..I looked in the records on line for the songs that were composed or co written by this gentleman. ..may the copyright library be used to verify as well?

Also if some info is removed will that help? This man is about 65 years old...and playing in some hotel and a restaurant...so he is not even in main stream music right now... his other band mates have articles that were published with much less information ... this man seems to have gotten lost in the credits..but has musical history..he's even worked briefly with Prince (saw vid on line)... which I think would be interesting to know for those who would even care...lol. Should I take out the kids and ex wife...is that dangerous to add... I learned this guy even slept with Chaka Khan (which I thought was interesting and helped get her on stage many nights when she was too high to perform)... of course that is tacky information and I feel not honoring to anyone to be on wiki. ..

Hi Poekneegurl (talk), First! I'm not a sir! My name is Julie. (Nice to meet you.) You can use any reliable source to verify information. Read WP:SOURCE for details, but in general, the source needs to have a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy. The material also has to have been published. If you've done interviews, and they've been published via reliable sources, they're valid. YouTube clips are generally not reliable sources - if it's from a valid source, it should appear on a site other than YouTube, with at least partial transcripts. (For example, CNN clips may appear on YouTube, but they live at CNN.com.) If it's online, and it's a valid source, you can use it to support the article! If you can't source your statements, you should remove them. There is a LOT going on in the article! You should simplify it - boil it down to the most significant points. Definitely take out any personal information. Don't even think about adding the Chaka Khan story! Let me know when you've had a chance to edit and I'll take another look. Alex Smith (Entrepreneur) - Articles for Deletion[edit] Hello I am a part of a group in northern Indiana that meets quarterly in person and semi-monthly remotely to discuss and learn Wikipedia and contribute with a focus on Indiana events, persons, companies etc. We are always providing each other with tricks and tips for improving our knowledge base and improve our contributions. This article that I contributed to is being considered for deletion and I see that you and others voted for "Speedy Keep" as it does appear to be a bad faith nomination. My question is, what is the process now moving forward? Does the error message at the top of the article drop off of stay and what is the usual timeline for the voting process on whether or not a contribution should indeed be deleted or not? So cool that you have a group! I'm sorry that the article was nominated for deletion, although it's definitely part of the whole Wikipedia experience. At least you're going through your first deletion AfD on an article that shouldn't have been nominated for deletion based on notability to being with. (I'm somewhat entertained that the nominator now has noted that he's been "working on drafts," apparently unaware that there's a history of every edit he's made, and previous to a couple this morning, his only edits were to nominate the article for deletion and to remove Alex Smith from the list of notable business people from Fort Wayne.) Anyway, important to know that deletion discussions are almost always based on consensus (not a vote), and are closed with a verdict by an administrator. I've seen AfD's closed by non-administrators when there unanimous based on the article has a snowball's chance in hell of being deleted, but I'm not sure exactly when that's appropriate. Anyway, there's no set timeline, but usually the discussions are closed fairly quickly when there's a clear consensus. When an administrator closes the discussion, he/she will remove the tag. Your question was whether I wanted to write about an article about Sytecee/ “Say It Loud It's My News and I am Proud"? The answer is not really. The idea is to present go live feature. I googled the term and it really has many uses. It can be used for something that goes viral (which I tried to present in my article), for some undergoing process etc. I found the article on the Adobe Go Live. I read this article on Wikipedia and this kind of go live is not the go live I had in mind. I wanted to present the feature "go live" which is present in social media apps and platforms (You Tube, Whatsapp etc..) and which is used to upload and stream the video and audio content the moment it is being recorded. One of the editors from the live chat talk has read the article and advised me to stay away from software engines which are embedded into social media porgramming and which enable this feature. I used Wowza engine because their site offered the clearest explanation of the go live and streaming feature. Sytecee is just a mere example.

Hi Scottsdesk (talk), Thanks for making that change. But you need to go back through the article and delete all of the statements which aren't strictly factual and/or specific. For example, "Upon departing from Evil Beaver, Laura has been involved in many things." What are the many things she has been involved with? Do you have citations for them? "Since Laura's departure from the band Evie has used Evil Beaver as her own artistic vehicle" isn't clear - what does "her own artistic vehicle mean"? Perhaps you should write that Evil Beaver became a solo project after Laura left the band. Be clear, specific, and neutral, and include only what is relevant. (You need to go through the entire submission -- there are other statements in need of editing.) Take a look at the articles for other artists. It will be easier for you to write the article if you structure it chronologically. For example, look at Joan Jett or Liz Phair. Hi, JSFarman!! Thank you for reviewing my Draft:Dimitris Paraskevas!! I read your review comments and I cannot understand the reason why you rejected my article. In my opinion, it meets the criteria Wiki sets for a living person's biography, as Dimitris Paraskevas held an important position in Greece as a Secretary for Privatisations (especially given the recent events in Greece this position influenced the political scene quite a lot) and is also a well known international business lawyer, who has been interviewed by BBC, Financial Times etc. Is it possible that you re-review it? If not, could you kindly explain me specifically what my article lacks of, so that I can work it out? The previous reviewer (Sulfurboy) told me that the article would be good if I fixed a minor citations' problem, which I did, and I was quite suprised to see it declined once again. I am looking forward for your response! Thank you for your time!

Hi there IdaValloMorris...there is definitely something off with the URL. I don't think it's either of us! But the problem remains with the references. It can be difficult for companies to establish notability (as Wikipedia defines notability), and it's even more difficult for media companies. I just did a search for MNI Targeted Media references and couldn't find them. You need indepndent references from reliable sources and the refs that are used on the current revision aren't sufficient. (They're not independent and/or don't provide in depth coverage.) I wish I could be more helpful, but I just spent some time searching for coverage on Joseph York that would confirm his notability and didn't come up with much. AllHipHop.com, Rolling Out, HipHop Enquirer aren't reliable sources, and the reliable sources here (The Source, WSJ, New York) don't provide extensive coverage. It's tough to search him because search results turn up a lot of content from the gossip sites/blogs. I think you can find the references you need but it will take a lot of digging. Sorry! (See WP:RELIABLE.)

I think you will be more successful if you narrow the scope of the article. Instead of saying he is an "entrepreneur, marketing professional, event promoter, talent manager, film producer and music producer" you can just say he's an entreprenuer, music and film producer. You can break down his career into those areas and the article will be much more manageable. BUT...you have to establish notability. Given his background I'd think that it can be done.
