Jara-Cavani incident
Thanks for the welcome. Let's see if I can produce my first talk. The Jara-Cavani incident is drawing tons of edits on wiki, mostly bad. I am a little concerned that it is actually being downplayed. It was the lead story of the tournament and will likely get Jara suspended and traded, making it very significant in the tournament history and his career.
From Cavani's perspective, if the incident is not properly recorded it will likely be very unfair to him. There is near universal defense of him in the press and on the internet. Without an explanation on his page the incident will likely appear as another where he lost his head on the pitch.
For those reasons I believe it deserves more coverage on both pages and definitely rises to the level of coverage I read about for a BLP.

Speedy deletion declined: Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Diversity IN Leadership Conference
Hello JMHamo. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Diversity IN Leadership Conference, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: not six months yet - created 16 Jan 2014. Thank you. JohnCD (talk) 21:00, 26 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi there JMH, AL "here",
even though your intentions were 100% correct, there is a glitch in the edit there which you reviewed then accepted. Like my summary says, the other user updated 2014/15 stuff and forgot to do the same with the 2013/14 data, hence my reversion.
Happy editing, cheers --84.90.219.128 (talk) 00:35, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

Hello, JMHamo, I wanted to discuss the question of the deletion of Moody's page. I don't necessarily disagree with you re. notability, in fact I added WP:NMOTORSPORT to the list of things it fails. But, I was wondering where (if at all) there is a discussion prior to deletion? Moody reached the top elechons of motorsport in Formula One and Moto GP, but I would agree he was not well known outside the sport and did not receive the sort of publicity that Nigel Stepney, Rob Smedley, Simon Rennie and others have had in their careers. Also I noted sometime yesterday that WordPress had been used as a ref. but note now that you have subsequently deleted it. I would have done so myself but for the writer of the 'blog' being Joe Saward a respected F1 journalist of 30 years experience. Regards, Eagleash (talk) 11:38, 9 July 2015 (UTC)
- @Eagleash: I nominated this for WP:PROD so there is no discussion; if left uncontested for seven days it gets deleted. If you disagreed with the PROD, you could remove the PROD tag to contest it and take it to WP:AFD, where Users would be able to !vote for it to be deleted or kept based on policy. Also, Wordpress is never a Reliable Source because it's user generated content.. see WP:BLOGS. I hope this helps. JMHamo (talk) 09:51, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
- OK, I don't really feel inclined to start a discussion about it. I just feel that perhaps an article should not be deleted without one. Just my opinion. As for WordPress as I said I would have deleted it myself were it not for the fact that it was Joe's page. WP:42 only says 'most' blogs are not reliable. There has to be an exception somewhere. Persondata
Hello. Read Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football/Archive 95#Persondata has been officially deprecated. What I'm doing for the (far too many) articles on my watchlist is making sure the info has been correctly transferred to wikidata and then removing the persondata. There's no need to remove persondata at all. Its presence does no harm to an article, and a bot will be going round removing it as soon as it gets approval, but I take the point made in the WT:FOOTY thread: that leaving it in when the data has been correctly transferred might waste someone else's time. I'm happy enough wasting my own...
But I can understand people not wanting to mess about with wikidata. So long as the persondata content appears elsewhere in the article, like in the infobox, which it ought to, nothing is lost if it's removed. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 12:13, 12 July 2015 (UTC)

Hi there, I'm sure your edits to this page were in good faith, you tagged with 'expanding...' but the only major change you made was to remove his Aston Villa youth honours and include a Hartlepool squad list. Please clarify why you did that? 09:16, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
- @Mountaincirque: I thought it was obvious what I did from this diff. In summary - I removed being a runner-up in a Youth competition because it's non-notable; I added the Hartlepool squad template and missing categories and did some MoS editing. I hope this answers your question. JMHamo (talk) 12:20, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
Kadima Conservatory article
Dear JMH,
Thank you for your reminder. For months I haven't been able to access our draft article: at various times either my login or the article itself was disqualified. (Your various editors didn't coordinate their responses, which essentially locked me out. I know you are all overloaded, so this is understandable.)
In the meantime our program has received additional funding from the city of Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, and state of California, and we are scrambling to expand our services to meet the demand. As a result no one has time to continue working on our Wikipedia entry now. I guess you might as well delete it.

Fraser Franks
Hi, just a note re your reversion of Fraser Franks' infobox stats. Franks made a number of appearances in the 2012-13 season for Welling as they won the Conference South. A fully referenced selection of these stats are available in the 'Career statistics' section. Soccerbase does not record Conference South statistics so please be wary about replicating Soccerbase stats verbatim in a player's infobox, especially if they have played non-League football. I'm not sure what your problem is. "Creative midfielder" (or similar) is a well-known and neutral term used to describe a certain type of player. And of course the statement is unreferenced - it's in the WP:LEDE where references are not normally included - but it's supported by statements in the main text. It's certainly not "unreferenced POV", as you claimed. Ghmyrtle (talk) 17:25, 17 July 2015 (UTC)
- @Ghmyrtle: See WP:LEADCITE - "Any statements about living persons that are challenged or likely to be challenged must have an inline citation every time they are mentioned, including within the lead." JMHamo (talk) 18:17, 17 July 2015 (UTC)
- Umm... yes, but you didn't challenge it, you deleted it! Ghmyrtle (talk) 18:25, 17 July 2015 (UTC)

- I don't have a problem with finding more or better references. What I'm unclear about is what parts of the sentence you believe are unreferenced, POV, or both. And, I'm surprised that you simply deleted the sentence rather than tagging it or raising the issue on the talk page. Ghmyrtle (talk) 17:53, 17 July 2015 (UTC)

http://aliveforfootball.com/blog is not a reliable source per WP:BLOGS JMHamo (talk) 18:41, 17 July 2015 (UTC)
- I didn't suggest it was a reliable site. I was pointing out that the term is widely and neutrally used, with a meaning close to "playmaker". Ghmyrtle (talk) 18:58, 17 July 2015 (UTC)
- Here in response to JMHamo's request: Probably would have been better dealt with at the article talk page, but whatever. I have no problem with the statement being unreferenced in the lead section, as long as it is supported by reliably-sourced and explicit statements in the body of the prose, either integrated into the main narrative or in a separate style-of-play section. At the moment, it isn't. Neither the playing as a creative midfielder bit, nor the playing as a winger early in his career bit, nor the creating goals for others bit. I know Mr Koumas did play both as a winger and as a creative midfielder, so it shouldn't be difficult to sort out some independent sourcing. Might be an idea if some of the stuff in the Cardiff sections was toned down, as well: "incredible super sub cameo" isn't entirely encyclopedic... hope this helps, Struway2 (talk) 18:19, 17 July 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for your considered response. I'll try and get back to the article to improve it - as you say, most if not all of the "contentious" statements can be easily referenced. Ghmyrtle (talk) 18:25, 17 July 2015 (UTC)
- I've removed the peacock terms from Jason Koumas#Second loan to Cardiff City too. Thank you. JMHamo (talk) 18:27, 17 July 2015 (UTC)

Would you care to tell me where it is mandated that a table has a header? It's clear that the table refers to club statistics by the fact that it's in a section called "Statistics" under a sub-section called "Club", so why do we need to say "Club statistics" at the top of the table? – PeeJay 10:23, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

In my opinion, yes. The editor clearly has no intention of making constructive edits, and they operate on what appears to be a rolling IP address, so disciplinary action would have no effect. Freddie Woodman
He plays for the England U-19 national team, he was #2 Goalkeeper at Newcastle for the 2014/15 season. If I'll be honest I'm surprised he hasn't got an article on Wikipedia yet. He has appeared in articles written by BBC, The Daily Mail, and The Journal. If you want me to put in those articles to reinforce notability, I understand, cause I didn't put in a few of them for repetitive reasons, but I guess it's always good to have more reliable sources than not. --Bobtinin (talk) 20:51, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team have been working on mobile phone support. They have fixed many bugs and improved language support. They post weekly status reports on mediawiki.org. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are improving language support and functionality on mobile devices.
Wikimania
The team attended Wikimania 2015 in Mexico City. There they participated in the Hackathon and met with individuals and groups of users. They also made several presentations about VisualEditor and the future of editing.
Following Wikimania, we announced winners for the VisualEditor 2015 Translathon. Our thanks and congratulations to users Halan-tul, Renessaince, जनक राज भट्ट (Janak Bhatta), Vahe Gharakhanyan, Warrakkk, and Eduardogobi.
For interface messages (translated at translatewiki.net), we saw the initiative affecting 42 languages. The average progress in translations across all languages was 56.5% before the translathon, and 78.2% after (+21.7%). In particular, Sakha improved from 12.2% to 94.2%; Brazilian Portuguese went from 50.6% to 100%; Taraškievica went from 44.9% to 85.3%; Doteli went from 1.3% to 41.2%. Also, while 1.7% of the messages were outdated across all languages before the translathon, the percentage dropped to 0.8% afterwards (-0.9%).
For documentation messages (on mediawiki.org), we saw the initiative affecting 24 languages. The average progress in translations across all languages was 26.6% before translathon, and 46.9% after (+20.3%). There were particularly notable achievements for three languages. Armenian improved from 1% to 99%; Swedish, from 21% to 99%, and Brazilian Portuguese, from 34% to 83%. Outdated translations across all languages were reduced from 8.4% before translathon to 4.8% afterwards (-3.6%).
We published some graphs showing the effect of the event on the Translathon page. Thank you to the translators for participating and the translatewiki.net staff for facilitating this initiative.
Recent improvements
Auto-fill features for citations can be enabled on each Wikipedia. The tool uses the citoid service to convert a URL or DOI into a pre-filled, pre-formatted bibliographic citation. You can see an animated GIF of the quick, simple process at mediawiki.org. So far, about a dozen Wikipedias have enabled the auto-citation tool. To enable it for your wiki, follow the instructions at mediawiki.org.
Your wiki can customize the first section of the special character inserter in VisualEditor. Please follow the instructions at mediawiki.org to put the characters you want at the top.
In other changes, if you need to fill in a CAPTCHA and get it wrong, then you can click to get a new one to complete. VisualEditor can now display and edit Vega-based graphs. If you use the Monobook skin, VisualEditor's appearance is now more consistent with other software.
Future changes
The team will be changing the appearance of selected links inside VisualEditor. The purpose is to make it easy to see whether your cursor is inside or outside the link. When you select a link, the link label (the words shown on the page) will be enclosed in a faint box. If you place your cursor inside the box, then your changes to the link label will be part of the link. If you place your cursor outside the box, then it will not. This will make it easy to know when new characters will be added to the link and when they will not.
On the English Wikipedia, 10% of newly created accounts are now offered both the visual and the wikitext editors. A recent controlled trial showed no significant difference in survival or productivity for new users in the short term. New users with access to VisualEditor were very slightly less likely to produce results that needed reverting. You can learn more about this by watching a video of the July 2015 Wikimedia Research Showcase. The proportion of new accounts with access to both editing environments will be gradually increased over time. Eventually all new users have the choice between the two editing environments.
Let's work together
- Share your ideas and ask questions at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback.
- Can you read and type in Korean or Japanese? Language engineer David Chan needs people who know which tools people use to type in some languages. If you speak Japanese or Korean, you can help him test support for these languages. Please see the instructions at mw:VisualEditor/IME Testing#What to test if you can help.
- If your wiki would like VisualEditor enabled on another namespace, you can file a request in Phabricator. Please include a link to a community discussion about the requested change.
- Please file requests for language-appropriate "Bold" and "Italic" icons for the styling menu in Phabricator.
- The design research team wants to see how real editors work. Please sign up for their research program.
- The weekly task triage meetings continue to be open to volunteers, usually on Tuesdays at 12:00 (noon) PDT (19:00 UTC). Learn how to join the meetings and how to nominate bugs at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. You do not need to attend the meeting to nominate a bug for consideration as a Q1 blocker, though. Instead, go to Phabricator and "associate" the main VisualEditor project with the bug.

Sam Patterson
Thanks for the notification on the PROD for Sam Patterson as an "Unsourced BLP" -- however, the article was sourced so I removed the PROD. I don't argue that it could use some beefing up but normally college football head coaches are kept in AFD discussions per essay WP:CFBCOACH. - Despite his somewhat angry demeanor, Aikikai45 has a point: Judo do is not a hoax; it's an actual variation on judo that was invented in Australia and has practitioners in Europe. I do not believe it to be a notable variation, but I do not either believe it to be a hoax. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 17:53, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

- The "hoax" business arose because an earlier version claimed it was an Olympic sport, based on a confusion with Judo. However, the thing itself is not a hoax: it seems from this that there is such a variant of Judo, though whether it is notable or deserves more than a mention under Judo#Related arts and derivatives is not clear. - From the peanut gallery. I originally tagged it as a hoax for some blatantly self-serving untruths including a claim that it was made a co-olympic sport with judo and the implication that it was the European version of Judo (Europeans do Judo not a variation). There was also attempts to associate it with styles of martial arts that have absolutely no connection to it. The olympic claim was dropped but not the association claims. That said the references (primary though they be) indicate that it exists and considers itself distinct. It would fail an AfD I am sure and I was considering that with the last creation.Peter Rehse (talk) 18:24, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

Re this reversion: Aikikai45 has clearly indicated his intention to abandon this effort. In placing a {{db-g2}} on his draft article, he made a mistake: what he really wanted to do was place a {{db-g7}} (author-requested deletion). Rather than revert this change, I think it would have been more helpful for you to have corrected the change and allow the draft to be deleted. As it stands now, the draft will likely hang around for six or 12 months until it is eligible for a WP:CSD#G13 deletion. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 12:21, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

Re-edition of a draft so as to improve it. References, notability. Hi ! I re-edited the draft of The Price We Pay. I hope it's good, It's a big documentary broadcasted in France, in Canada and in USA (in theaters and on Tv). Last week it was broadcasted on ICI Radio Canada TV and the Hashtag #thepricewepay was the second Hashtag in the whole Canada and the 3rd in Québec during the evening. I put very different references and also chose to put french and francophone references so as to show the international impact of the movie. We can consider these references (press, journalist articles including La Presse, Radio-Canada, Imdb and international festival websites including TIFF and Vancouver Film Critics Circle...) as "reliable and independent references" concerning the movie, can't we ? It was selected in Canada Top Ten's in one of the biggest festival in the World in 2014 (TIFF), but also broadcasted in 2015 in the same TIFF, plus it won the Best Canadian Documentary in 2015 in the VFCC and went to several big festivals all around the world.
Please feel free to tell me what to do :) Thanks a lot !

Are you willing to back me up with regard to asking this guy to change his editing methods? I have tried reaching out to the administrators but that's going nowhere. Is there any way this issue can be raised in WikiProject Football, perhaps by establishing a project-specific policy? Eightball (talk) 13:55, 18 September 2015 (UTC)
- Eightball, project-specific policies cannot override project policies such as WP:V and WP:BURDEN. --NeilN talk to me 14:11, 18 September 2015 (UTC)
- NeilN, I'm not suggesting that it should. I'm saying that best practice, when faced with an unreferenced addition or an incorrect timestamp, should be to provide a reference or correct the timestamp. Immediately reverting the edit is an assumption of bad faith, in my opinion. My first assumption would be that the edit is correct, in which case I would attempt to verify the information, add/update the reference, then correct the timestamp. Only if I find that to be impossible would I revert the edit. Blanket reverting these edits without a second thought is not productive in any way. Eightball (talk) 14:15, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

VisualEditor update
- This note is only delivered to English Wikipedia subscribers of the visual editor's newsletter.
The location of the visual editor's preference has been changed from the "Beta" tab to the "Editing" section of your preferences on this wiki. The setting now says Temporarily disable the visual editor while it is in beta. This aligns en.wiki with almost all the other WMF wikis; it doesn’t mean the visual editor is complete, or that it is no longer “in beta phase” though.
This action has not changed anything else for editors: it still honours editors’ previous choices about having it on or off; logged-out users continue to only have access to wikitext; the “Edit” tab is still after the “Edit source” one. You can learn more at the visual editor’s talk page.
We don’t expect this to cause any glitches, but in case your account no longer has the settings that you want, please accept our apologies and correct it in the Editing tab of Special:Preferences. Thank you for your attention, Elitre (WMF) -16:32, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

There are numerous mentions of Al-Hilal FC (نادي الهلال )(Crescent) and Ittihad FC(نادي ) (Union) in it. Also in http://www.alrage.net/vb/t97547.html is the interviewers question:
This is hardly significant coverage, so GNG is not meet in my opinion. JMHamo (talk) 01:35, 25 October 2015 (UTC)
- I'm not arguing WP:GNG (though it's a wide-reaching interview - that's about 2 sentences from the end). I'm simply using that to confirm that this IS the same player who played for both Al-Hilal FC and Ittihad FC; the article dates from February 2008 less than 26 monmths after Ittihad's December 2005 2005 FIFA Club World Championship appearance. I suspect the sum total of those 3-4 articles (though certainly not the one about him retiring) do meet WP:GNG though my familiarity with the Saudi medi isn't strong enough to make that assertion without further research. I'm asserting that WP:NFOOTBALL is met. Nfitz (talk) 02:11, 25 October 2015 (UTC)
- BTW, I haven't confirmed his league appearances, though [2] does confirm that he did score a goal during one league playoff match. Nfitz (talk) 03:15, 25 October 2015 (UTC)
I bow to your judgment on the lead content for this article. I wanted to note that the reason I made the edit was because it seemed very unclear for a neutral that he was no longer manager of Aston Villa. The only clue was the omission from the opening sentence. Surely saying that he was appointed and rescued them from relegation as the final piece of information in the lead is misleading and misses out a key recent development? I don't quite understand why it's not considered significant, it's in the Great Lakes Premier League and most other teams in that league have a Wikipedia page. It says it doesn't "credibly indicate the importance or significance of the subject", I linked to the official website. If you could send me the content of the deleted page and also let me know what additional info would make it more "significant" I would appreciate it. Thanks! - @Cjrobe: See WP:FOOTYN for the relevant club notability guideline. JMHamo (talk) 14:43, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
