[edit]If you intend to make useful contributions instead of promoting your business or organization, you may request unblock and a username change. In your reasons, you must:
- Disclose any compensation you may receive for your contributions in accordance with the paid-contribution disclosure requirement; and
- Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked; and
- Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked; and
- Provide a new username.
To do this, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}}
at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with your new username and replace the text "Your reason here" with your reasons to be unblocked.
Please note that the new username you choose cannot already be taken and in use by another account. You can go here to search and see if the username you'd like to choose is available. If the search returns that no global account with that username exists, that means it is available to be taken.
Appeals: If, after reviewing the guide to appealing blocks, you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal it by adding the text{{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}
at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your reason here" with the reasons you believe the block was an error, and publish the page. Cullen328 (talk) 00:06, 31 January 2024 (UTC)

Request reason:
Hi I am completely new to this, so apologies. I have not been paid to make any contributions. When I originally set up the account it was with a view to making minor edits. (I didn't really think through the username - it was just where I started and didn't realise that it would have an issue of perception. Thanks for pointing that out. The field of Emergency Management and Disaster Management is growing and I'd like to contribute to the wide body of information held on Wikipedia including knowledge and lessons from past disasters, techniques for disaster management, assessment and relevant organisations (where they are notable). I am also passionate about art and would like to contribute there. I had thought that because the Institute of Civil Protection and Emergency Management had been listed in several existing Wikipedia pages including Emergency Management, Post Nominals and Pracademics that it would be useful to have an article on them in Wikipedia. Also, I had anticipated that there would be dialogue with Wikipedia admins about how to make this better etc. rather than being blocked. However, following communication from yourselves I understand that 1) legacy information on Wikipedia is not necessarily up to the standard required in Wikipedia these days. 2) that an organisation should be notable. I probably included too many links to the organisation website rather than to independent sources such as the websites of others where they are mentioned, other publications and journals and non-digital sources such as books. I also understand that there are places to discuss content and take advice, I hadn't appreciated that and fully intend to use these in the future, rather than going straight to 'publish'. Thank you for taking the time to read this request.

- The problem is the promotionality of your edits and your WP:conflict of interest What edits would you make outside this conflict of interest? Thanks -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 15:45, 31 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks Deepfriedokra. It was not my intention to promote the organisation. There were some error and old references in the existing pages of Wikipedia with regard to the organisation which I tried to update. I would like to make updates generally around disasters, disaster management, planning and preparedness and other areas that I am interested in such as Art ensuring data is informative, accurate and up to date. LaughingGirl1322 (talk) 16:54, 31 January 2024 (UTC)
- You say you weren't paid to make contributions, do you have any relationship with the ICPEM organization at all? 331dot (talk) 09:26, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, 331dot, yes - I volunteer for them and other similar organisations. They are not my employer. They are run solely by volunteers. I did a scan of the internet and where there were old links or outdated information about the organisation (ICPEM), for example on the London.gov.uk website I sought to get those corrected. Similarly there was out of date information on Wikipedia. That was the reason for originally editing the text. As there were quite a few mentions on Wikipedia about the organisation, like other similar organisations I thought it might be helpful to create an article. However, I understand that I can't do that on Wikipedia because it is regarded as a conflict of interest. In future I would only seek to provide useful content and not market or promote any organisation. I completely understand that, and it was never my deliberate intention to do that, although completely understand that is how it could be regarded. AS said above my interests are around resilience in disasters and that is how I would like to contribute to Wikipedia. LaughingGirl1322 (talk) 10:45, 1 February 2024 (UTC)

- Wikipedia's guideline on conflict of interest discourages editors from writing about organisations they are connected to. One of the main reasons for that is that if one is closely involved in a subject, it can be difficult, or even impossible, to stand back from it and see how one's own writing on the subject will look from the detached perspective of an independent outside observer, which means that one's writing is likely to look highly promotional to others, even if one genuinely believes one is writing neutrally. From what you say, that may have happened in your case, rather than your having intentionally set out to promote. Either way, however, I think it unlikely that any administrator will unblock you to continue to write about the Institute of Civil Protection and Emergency Management. Are you willing to undertake not to write about that institute, and instead to contribute on subjects in which you don't have such a personal involvement? If so, I can see an unblock as reasonably likely. Your comments above give me the impression that you will be willing to do that, but it will make the situation clearer if you can give a definite "yes" or "no". JBW (talk) 16:11, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, I commit I will NOT write about the Institute in future. I completely understand how this is viewed. Thanks 82.44.36.145 (talk) 08:59, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
- Please log in to edit -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 10:31, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
- Yes. Administrators usually don't assume that posts made without logging in come from an editor whose account is blocked, rather than from someone else. That may seem pedantic and bureaucratic, but unfortunately there have been incidents where someone has pretended to be a registered editor not logged in for dishonest purposes, so we can't take it for granted that it's you, even if we think it probably is. JBW (talk) 21:44, 4 February 2024 (UTC)

- @Cullen328: There's a lot of reading involved, but is it OK to unblock? Appellant agrees to not edit about ICPEM. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 00:45, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
- Deepfriedokra, I have no objection to unblocking. This editor has the potential to become a productive editor in the emergency services topic area. I hope that happens. I am going to leave a personal message on your user talk page. Cullen328 (talk) 03:38, 14 February 2024 (UTC)

Rename not successful
[edit]"The chosen username is too similar to an existing username or it used to be username of someone else that got renamed." The software won't let me rename to LaughingGirl . Wikipedia and copyright
[edit]Hello LaughingGirl1322! Your additions to Bombings of Paddington and Victoria stations have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.
- You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
- Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
- We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
- If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
- Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 12:35, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
