Non-24

SO... any successes in treating it?

As someone with a 28-hour sleep-wake cycle, I'm beyond curious. And it isn't like there's a lot of information available... Aadieu (talk) 18:39, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

  • True, and it isn't even easy to look it up as it has so many names. It's easier to look up DSPS and see if N24 is mentioned. Or search for 'blind' and 'circadian'. Researchers will have to admit soon, I think, that there are more sighted cases than they have been claiming/admitting.
  • I've heard of a couple of sighted young people who are successfully managed by the treatments for DSPS, both being treated by experts. A keyword may be young. One of them uses Rozerem as needed now; he likes it better than melatonin.
  • Among the blind, it seems that those whose natural circadian period is very near to 24 hours are the easiest to treat - with small doses of melatonin. I've not been in contact with any of them. Just read about them, for example in A. Lewy's research.
  • The sighted I know about, aside from those two young ones, haven't achieved anything near a cure, sorry to say. It's possible, I suppose, that some manage it very well and just don't feel a need to tell the world about it.... Good luck!
Speculation, personal experience, or medical profession?

Concerning melatonin: it, much like OTC sleep aids like dyphenhydramine HCL (aka benadryl/dimedrol), creates MASSIVE hangovers (way worse than drinking oneself to sleep) and makes for an 11 hour sleep cycle to be anywhere near rested (vs. 6-7hrs normal). And even if you do wake up rested, you still require massive doses of caffeine to get moving and stop being lethargic. By massive, I mean that I've spent 10% of my income (which was quite good at the time, I might add) on energy drinks before and totally buggered up my digestive system doing that - it was a choice between sleep deprivation to make it to work and hence lowered productivity in a piece-rate translation gig with pay directly proportional to output, decent sleep but no productivity to speak of, or caffeine intake in excess of 1000 mg per day to stay alert. Only sleep aid to work like a charm and without the 'medicinal hangover' was nitrazepam. It supposedly has a long half-life, but for whatever reason, the effects wear off while you're still asleep, and don't bug you in the morning. However, it's got its own issues: A) docs in my country are loath to prescribe it, due to its potential for abuse and its status as a top-schedule drug here. Only reason I know of it at all is that my grandmother loaned me a few unused sleeping pills years ago, when her own prescription got changed to something else. No doctor in Russia is about to prescribe it to a 24yo temporarily unemployed male college student. B) Potential side effects on male virility are beyond scary, especially for an unmarried young bloke without any kids yet, and an admitted womanizer. BTW, vast quantities of sex (3+ times daily, and I mean every single bloody day) do seem to fix the non-24h problem entirely, except for the fact that: 1) few women have a stable libido that high, 2) that does drain a lot of time and energy from hobbies, business, chores, etc., 3)I'm not that good at keeping up stable relationships.

P.S. if I've understood you correctly, and you have some interest in the topic, might I ask - in your opinion, what IQs do the sighted young persons with this issue that you've encountered have? Also, do they seem to have at least mild OCD? From my experience, others with non-24h seem to be IQ 140+ and more than somewhat obsessive-compulsive; personally, I've been clocked at IQ 168 and certainly have a regular subconscious urge to get something accomplished (or just finish some reading or something) that commonly overrides my desire to hit the sack. Perhaps, the entire problem lies in intelligent people with overactive imaginations compulsively overriding their biological urges to get something done?

P.P.S. The IQ 168 part doesn't seem to be BS; 1590/1600 on old SATs and a text translation output of up to 75 pages/day (vs 8-12 pages industry standard) seem to indicate at least some increased processing power on the part of my gray matter =) Aadieu (talk) 17:48, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

  • Not medically trained. I've had DSPS since long before it had a name. You can check out my blog about it if you like. There are some links there, too.
  • I know that some people have hangovers from melatonin. It doesn't seem reasonable to me, if timed right and in a small enough dose (1/2 mg is more than enough). Its half-life is less than an hour. But people do say so.
  • The two young people I referred to are, I believe, bright. I don't know about any OCD. It seems many people with DSPS/N24 have or think they might have ADHD.
  • I think DSPS/N24 are hard-wired. But it seems obvious (to me) that people who are at their most creative after having been awake for well over 14 hours, are not going to want to go to sleep when they want to get something done and aren't sleepy. - Hordaland (talk) 01:29, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

ADHD arbitration case amendment request

Regarding this, I am pleased to say that Scuro has been assigned/found a mentor. In addition, following discussion in other locations, one of the parties to the request has indicated that they are happy for it to be closed. As one of the other parties to that request, could you indicate whether you are happy for it to be closed? Carcharoth (talk) 02:32, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

Replied on your talk page. - Hordaland (talk) 03:12, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

Re: Farthest North

Thanks for catching that - the error was already in the caption, but I did not catch it. I fixed it now, thanks, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:02, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

Fredrik Hjalmar Johansen

Thanks for the nice comment at the Ref Desk. It's fun to help but it's cool to know that the help actually did help - especially since I wasn't sure that was a solid enough reference. Had no luck finding anything official online about the World's Fair competition - that would probably take a newspaper archive. Anyway, thank you for the courtesy. Sleep medicine task force

I replied to your idea on the WP:MED task force discussion page under the formal discussion and thought that I might let you know, since I don't know how often you check that page for updates. Tyrol5 [Talk] 20:49, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

Re: Ooops

No problem. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. After all, patients such as yourself sometimes know much more than anyone. Regards, Tyrol5 [Talk] 19:42, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

It is relevant

You removed the section on Hsu and Perry in the Chronobiology but failed to provide any reason why you deem it not relevant. It is wholly relevant, since the article directly shows how human and climatic events on Earth are linked to the cyclical variations in solar luminosity and the patterns chronicled in the paper directly correlate with the finding of Chizhevsky, who is cited in the Chronobiology article. Therefore I ask you to unremove what was added. I also separated the very long section in that article, into 2 because to make it easier for everyone to read, so there was no need for you to reverse that. Please try to keep Wikipedia a place for constructive editing, not destructive editing. Thank you. Zanze123 (talk) 14:15, 17 October 2009 (UTC)]

You (plural) think that astrology has nothing to do with solar cycles. You forget that solar cycles are governed by the sun which is a STAR. Astrology has everything to do with heliobiology. On the topic of stars and related to this, since things like this at Wikipedia, ultimately comes down to a matter of subjective opinion, listings at Wikipedia such as the Chronobiology one thereby become *nebulous*. You believe the circadian rhythms and solar cycles are 'way off topic' in a listing about Chronobiology, and delete a citation which specifically relates to a solar chronometer for climate on Earth (what the deuce?). I give up wasting my time. [[[User:Zanze123|Zanze123]] (talk) 00:19, 19 October 2009 (UTC)]

Unsolicited advice

Not an impressive response. Informative, yes, but not impressive. Well, at least we know where it stands.

I'd really like to have Scuro avoid the kind of drama that's swirling around Mattisse, and I believe that a little action on Xav's part (at the right time) could at least reduce it, but it looks like neither Scuro nor Xav are making any plans in that direction. Oh, well. WhatamIdoing (talk) 03:44, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

Haven't followed the M-case, and don't want to. :-)
It's early on, and Xav's short and to-the-point entries look ok to me. S/he is seeing what the long, self-centered posts look like and, I think, should be given more time. Meanwhile, L is showing patience worthy of sainthood -- just hope s/he can keep it up...

Thank you for the complimeants! :) I really would like scuro to work things out with us all but I to share concerns with how mentorship is going and I to feel scuro is abusing the mentorship. I do think that if scuro continues on that the mentor will see through all of this. You both could help by adding benzodiazepine drug misuse to your watch list. It has been coming under edit war attack recently and I am struggling with so much drama. Trying to deal with ADHD drama, trying to improve quinolone articles and then edit warring by a suspected sockpuppet or meatpuppet of paul gene/the sceptical chymist is too much. I will not give up though. :)--Literaturegeek | T@1k? 00:32, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

Translation to Norwegian:

Might this translation be acceptable for the Norwegian version of the article: War in Afghanistan?

"En tysk operasjon i Kunduz startet 7.april 2009, dagen etter at 2 missiler landet ved utkanten av leiren som kansler Angela Merkel hadde forlatt 20 minutter tidligere.[1] "

English text: "A German operation in Kunduz started April 07,2009 on the day after 2 missiles landed outside the perimeter fence, 20 minutes after Chancellor Angela Merkel left the base."

P.S. I am not trying imply that you have this-or-that view on the topic.

P.P.S. It seems I have been blocked from Norwegian wikipedia. Maybe something was wrong with my translation, since my last edit was reverted.Hovel mania (talk) 17:39, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

References

I've not visited your links. Comparing the two sentences for content: "outside the perimeter fence" is precise while "ved utkanten av leiren" is vague.

The sentences are not very good; it's not even real clear whether Merkel left on the 6th or on the 7th! Given a choice, I'd turn it into 2 sentences:

  • En tysk operasjon i Kunduz startet 7. april 2009, dagen etter at kansler Angela Merkel hadde besøkt leiren. Bare tjue minutter etter Merkel reiste derfra, hadde to missiler landet like ved leiren.
  • A German operation in Kunduz started on April 07, 2009, a day after Chancellor Angela Merkel had visited the base. Within twenty minutes of Merkel's departure, two missiles had landed outside the perimeter fence.

Hope that helps. - Hordaland (talk) 21:41, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

What happened here? [1] You seem to have removed my comment and added your own. I'm not assuming bad faith, just curious. Regards, --—Cyclonenim | Chat  22:23, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

Interesting haha, oh well no real harm done. I guess stuff like this happens from time to time. I don't know where to file a bug report though. Bugzilla? Regards, --—Cyclonenim | Chat  22:44, 27 October 2009 (UTC)
