Re:Vote
[edit]Not a problem, I figured it was the least I could do for your support on the RfA vote :-) Hey, do you think the others would like the scoreboard idea for the election that i've put on my user page? I know it needs a little work and needs to be updated, but it seems like it'd make things so much easier when it comes down to seeing who won. Karmafist 20:47, 7 October 2005 (UTC)
- Almost, the first two are in the long term tranche and the second two are in the short term tranche, although there's a tie for the fourth spot, so I figured I should make that another color. That was the part I figured I'd have to make a key for. Karmafist 21:01, 7 October 2005 (UTC)

Hi there Titoxd, I really like the User Affiliations table you have there on your user page. Do you mind if I use some of your formats for my own? Gryffindor 21:21, 7 October 2005 (UTC)

You can copy the code for the User Affiliations table (although it's really a modification of the {{Babel}} template) or any other thing on the page (like the status templates). Re:Birthday
[edit]Thank you for the birthday wishes, the sign of Wikithanks, and the vote of support on the Advisory Election. I've seen you pretty active around Esperanza, but I hardly ever see you elsewhere. My goal when voting was to try to promote lesser-known, hardworking Wikipedians to positions where they will have a stronger voice in our society. I think you fit that description. :) Acetic'Acid 06:26, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

Macrons
[edit]Just curious, but why would you take the time and trouble to change a bunch of links that point to an actual article title, but display the name with macrons, to links that point to the macron title, but which just redirect to the actual articles anyway? -Jefu 22:49, 10 October 2005 (UTC)
- Now I see what happened. You actually moved Emperor Komyo's article to "Emperor Kōmyō" and then fixed a number of redirects. Unfortunately, there was never any agreement to use macrons in article titles and a number of people were against it. We have now made it through about 100 of the emperor articles, but they're all being moved to "Emperor X", without macrons. This article will probably end up being moved again to maintain consistency, once we get to it. -Jefu 22:56, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

Hi Jefu, I'm afraid I don't quite follow what you meant with your question or are talking about... ? Gryffindor 20:16, 11 October 2005 (UTC)
- Just out of curiosity, who is this mysterious "we"? I have seen japanese articles where macrons are used. However if you want to move it to Emperor Komyo without macrons, I will not stand in the way. I can help with the fixing of the redirects again in that case if needed... Gryffindor 23:02, 11 October 2005 (UTC)
ps: Listen, I just bumped into this Empress Go-Sakuramachi article with double-redirect, like what on earth is going on there? Is it what that Arrigo did back then? Just tell me what the final version is and I'll help you (apparently plural) out with fixing those double-redirects, this is like insane... Is it "Empress Go-Sakuramachi" or "Go-Sakuramachi Empress"? Gryffindor 23:22, 11 October 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, I know. This is the legacy that Arrigo left us. They are being fixed. We have made it through about a hundred and have thirty or so to go. You are welcome to help with circular redirects, but only an administrator can move the articles to the proper titles. Thanks. -Jefu 23:25, 11 October 2005 (UTC)
- Yeah, it's the circular redirects I meant. Maybe I can help fixing the links in each article, and then when the administrator finally moves it, everything will be in place already? But could you tell me what the final status of Empress Go-Sakuramachi is supposed to be? Or maybe I can get in touch with the administrator you are working with and help out in the meantime when you are absent? Gryffindor 09:43, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
- The problem with changing redirects before moving the article is that people tend to quickly notice them and change them back. I haven't run into any other circular redirects so far, other than the Go-Sakuramachi article (the title will end up being "Empress Go-Sakuramachi"), so it probably isn't a huge problem. I need to bug the administrator soon anyway so that we can finish up the rest of the articles. He's been busy working on something else, so I've been trying to leave him alone, but it has been a few weeks since we last moved any so I'll send him an e-mail. Thanks. -Jefu 11:13, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
- Well again, I can get in touch with this administrator of yours (I'm asuming this is User:Jnc) as well and help out with the sorting of these articles. I think we could make this a group project because this work is quite substantial that needs to be fixed. Gryffindor 12:59, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
Lalla Salma
[edit]I have deleted the redirect history of Princess Lalla Salma of Morocco and Lalla Salma of Morocco so you can move the article to either. Please sort out any double redirects if you do. --Henrygb 23:24, 10 October 2005 (UTC)
Wiener Moderne
[edit]Hi Gryffindor and thank you for the flower. I'd welcome some input on the Wiener Moderne article, but I've decided against a straight translation (although this would be quicker!) as I think the de:Wiener Moderne German-language article is a little decontextualised and also lacks a clear structure. I've already mapped out a possible structure on the page, but before I write more I want to do a little background reading and I'm not likely to get that done earlier than this weekend. I am intending to use some content from the German article, so I may have translation queries. Perhaps you might like to add comments on the article talk page as I begin to fill in the blank sections - or, of course, add directly into the article! Valiantis 19:49, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

Letters with diacritic marks in category sorting
[edit]Please do not use letters with diacritic marks in category sorting ([1]) because they are put after the end of the alphabet (e.g. á is put after z!) which results in wrong ordering. Thank you. -- Adam78 23:04, 16 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit]We had a discussion about the spelling of Gauss some time ago. It turns out, in German both spellings are acceptable, and in english only "Gauss" is used. - There are a few ways to get aoi in kanji. But, the color is 青い ja:青. The one you picked (when not in a name) literally means hollyhock, which is bluish in the wikipedia picture, so at first I thought maybe you were using some really old derived etymology. I can't find anything relating the Aoi no Ue name ja:葵の上 to the color Aoi/Blue at all. Can I remove the Aoi link from Aoi no Ue too?

Background color
[edit]Hi Gryffindor. I'm back from my wikibreak now. About your question, notice this code I'm copying here: {| width=100% cellspacing=10 style="background-color: #F8EABA;" |- !style="background:#ECC850; font-size: 130%" align=center|. Notice particularly the part that says "background-color". That's a way of defining the background color of a board or even a page. You'd have to write in the code at the top of the page, and close the bracket only at the bottom, after you've written in between everthing you wanted. However, I'm not exactly the king of codes. There are two safer ways for you to get your user page exactly as you want: 1)You might ask for assistence at the Help Desk; 2) And this is something I do when I see something someone did that I might not know how to do but like: I click the "edit this page" tab, but I never actually edit another user's page (you have to remember to hit the "cancel" bottom later!). I do it so I can see the source for the page, and see what was the code that the user used to get the results I'm seeing on the screen. This can get tricky, because some codes may be complex, and you seldom want an exact copy of another user's user page, and adapting the code to your needs may take time and some effort, but I usually manage. Does that cover it? Regards, Redux 00:22, 29 October 2005 (UTC)

South Tyrol etc.
[edit]Hi, I'll try, but I'm afraid I'm not very good at that sort of thing and I don't know enough about it. I have always found placenames in more than one language rather confusing, and here it's German, Italian and English. Well, I will at least have a look at it tomorrow. All the best, <KF> 00:35, 7 November 2005 (UTC)
- See here. Trentino Alto Adige is the Italian name for it, but I see don't much use it the renaming; a redirect would probably do it. I'll take a look at the discussion. Cheers. Lectonar 09:31, 7 November 2005 (UTC)
- I don't know any Italian so I won't be much help, but FWIW there are 504 Google Print hits for Trentino Alto Adige + Italy (to make sure they're in English) and 37 for Trentino South Tyrol. Google Print means they are printed books. So both are used in English, with the Italian apparently more popular. If that is the case, then this WP:NC quote would be relevant: "Convention: Name your pages in English and place the native transliteration on the first line of the article unless the native form is more commonly used in English than the English form" (the same as at Dresden Frauenkirche). Saint|swithin 19:51, 7 November 2005 (UTC)
Trentino-???????
[edit]Hi Gryffindor, I proposed to assign the correct name (in english or in italian or in deutsch). The denomination correct is "Trentino-Alto Adige" in italian or "Trentino-Südtirol" in german. In english I can found "Trentino-Upper Adige", "Trentine-Upper Adige" or "Trentine-South Tyrol" or "Trentino-South Tyrol", not a clearly denomination. The name "South Tyrol", furthermore, is correct, but there are a lot of discussions in Italy about this denomination: the people of this province names themselves "southtirolers" like the old denomination before 1919, but also the separatists who was very active in the period 1970-1980. It is like "Euskadi" for the Basque Country. For this reason I proposed to use the denomination in italian or in german because the choice to translate in "Upper Adige" or in "South Tyrol" is a position for one point of view and the article can be considered POV by one or by the other ethnic group. In Italy there is this salomonic decision: give a name "Trentino-Alto Adige" to overall region (because the italian people is prevalent) and the name Südtirol to the province because here the german people is prevalent (in Italy the administrative division is region-->province-->commune). In effect this is also the decision that the Swiss takes (I live in Swiss) when there are bilingual cantons like Fribourg.
About the rivers I can accept the mixed denomination i.e. for Eisack-Isarco, or for the towns like Brixen-Bressanone, but not for the Adige also because the tongues in this territory are three (+ladin) and, to be correct, a lot of rivers or towns should have be named with three mixed names. --Ilario 16:32, 7 November 2005 (UTC)

Naming of rivers, cities and so on in South Tyrol
AfD
[edit]I've opened up an AFD for Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Naming conventions (Western nobility). That article was created in effect as an alternative to Wikipedia:Naming conventions (names and titles) and then rewritten by the author, in a cut and paste. I strongly disapprove of someone doing a cut and paste of one article, moving it to a new (badly named) page and editing it without a consensus (or even it would seem an awareness among people that this new page existed), and in the process losing the old article's edit history. As a contributor on the topic of royal and noble naming you might wish to cast a vote on the issue. [[user_talk:Jtdirl]] 00:07, 20 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit]Colours
[edit]Hi! I hope you are as well as I am. Thanks for your note. Remember that there are differences between the various colour systems used in print, on-screens, and online. Important among these are the red-green-blue (RGB) system (used on monitors due to the phosphors in CRTs), cyan-magenta-yellow-black (CMYK), of four-spot (or variant CMY), the Pantone Matching System (PMS) for print, hue-saturation-and luminance (HSL) system, Hex code (online), and the Hostmann-Steinberg, K+E, Schmincke (HKS) system to name a few. (Red-yellow-blue, used by artists, is somewhat archaic as it does not correspond with colours interpreted by the rods and cones in the human eye. Given the various systems, conversions between them are not always precise and can vary.
As you've requested:
- Pantone 032 red, or PMS 032 — corresponds roughly to:
R,G,B=239,43,47
C,M,Y,K,=0,91,87,0
Hex code = EF2B2F
This is also the colour specified on numerous flags, particularly (closer to home!) for the Flag of Canada; a rough approximation in RGB is a For simplicity, onscreen RGB red (R,G,B=255,0,0) is generally used.
- HKS 13 — corresponds roughly to:
R,G,B=250,223,228
C,M,Y,K=3,26,8,0
Hex code = FADFE4
Moreover, various graphics programmes (e.g., CorelDraw) convert colours based on specific algorithms, and there are also online sites that provide rough conversions for colours of note:
I hope this is helpful. Let me know if you've any questions. (I've also been tardy reviewing the name-changes articles you previously mentioned to me, but I'll do so soon.) Thanks! E Pluribus Anthony 18:55, 24 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit]I got vandalised a few hours ago as well. I wonder if we have anything in common. Andjam 11:38, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
Query
[edit]Would you mind having a look at Babel Barnstar for Translation, as you are quite active in this section too. Cheers. Lectonar 12:22, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
- Hmmm, nennt man das jetzt fishing for compliments? Lectonar 13:43, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
Also, nicht beirren lassen. :)) Lectonar 13:51, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
Níðhöggr
[edit]Hi Haukurth, I do have some questions about the Nidhogg. I am a bit concerned that apparently an english version does exist, considering the Google hits. My other question is, and please be honest with me about this, is the version you are suggesting Níðhöggr Old Norse, or Icelandic in reality? Because this is after all the English-language Wikipedia. So maybe you can fill me in on this a little, appreciate it... Gryffindor 13:21, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
- Hi, Gryffindor. Thanks for giving the matter such thoughtful consideration. The form "Níðhöggr" is indeed Old Norse. The Modern Icelandic form is "Níðhöggur". The letter 'ǫ' is frequently replaced with 'ö' when writing Old Norse because the latter is available in many more fonts. See this Old Norse text for example: [4] I would personally be fine with using 'ǫ' on Wikipedia, using 'ö' was an attempt to compromise towards forms that might be more easily available. - Haukur Þorgeirsson 13:52, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
See my most recent comments at Talk:Níðhöggr, they may address some of your concerns. But thank you for your confidence in me, I really appreciate it. - Haukur Þorgeirsson 14:16, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar
[edit]For your patience, politeness, and strong display of courtesy (especially to Wikipedia's newcomers), I award you this Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar. Keep up the good work! 青い(Aoi) 10:46, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
Rosetta Barnstar
[edit]hey there,
I saw your discussion on the proposed new barnstar, did you create that image? It's beautiful, congratulations. I think the general trend seems to be going that way. I really liked the globe one as well, but I think it would be better for geography. the UN one is nice too, but maybe too national with all those flags, maybe for some UN barnstar in future. the one with the tower of Babel is good too but too big I think... how many more votes do we need, are you familiar with the rules for creating new barnstars? great work, keep it up :-) cheers Gryffindor 01:07, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
- Hello! I was just replying to you at Wikipedia:Barnstar and award proposals when you posted the above message. As I mentioned there, this is a straw poll — an informal means of gauging opinion. There is no official number of votes required, and it's become obvious that the proposal will succeed.
- And yes, I did create the Rosetta barnstar image. Thanks very much for your kind words! —Lifeisunfair 01:16, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

Rechinen
[edit]I have been fiddling with your esteemed translation of the article on the Austrian family crown. I can't find anything about the jewels called Rechinen, even in the German Wiktionary. Can you find the chemical formula? J S Ayer 19:11, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
"Spinellen" and the chemical formula help immensely. Thanks! J S Ayer 04:17, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
Penn Station NY images
[edit]They were both from the Library of Congress photo archive. At the time I uploaded them, sources were not required for PD images. —Matthew Brown (T:C) 03:48, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit]Hello Gryffindor. Thanks for the vote of confidence in my RFA. I have now officially received the badge, so I shall try my best to be a good administrator. Thanks again. --TheParanoidOne 22:01, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
Cnwb's RfA
[edit]Professor Gryff,
Thanks so very much for supporting my Request for Admin. The final result was 38/0/0. I'm looking forward to spending my summer holidays shut away in a darkened room, drinking G&Ts and playing with my new tools ;-) Please accept this Tim Tam as a token of my gratitude. Cnwb 22:56, 4 December 2005 (UTC)I'm an admin now!!
[edit]Thanks a ton for your support on my rfa, the final tally was 50-0-0; I'll try and live up to the expectations of others and do my best in maintaining the integrity of Wikipedia. And thanks again for voting twice on my rfa (Ofcourse, you corrected it before I noticed it). Jai Hind!!--Gurubrahma 14:36, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
- Hi, as far as Vijayanagar goes, there were some nice articles on the telugu Wikipedia and I was planning to translate them - the templates and the three articles were translations. Planning to work on the red links some time soon. User:ImpuMozhi and User:TBC have also been working on related articles. The latter is also not an Indian (like you), but is very much interested in history of India. May be you guys can work together on history articles in general? Thanks for your support and encouragement. --Gurubrahma 06:31, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
Thank you, Gryffindor, for your support in my RfA (although I hope that the substance of my edits is as impressive as their number) - I'll do my best as an admin to make the reality of Wikipedia rise to the level of the dream. BD2412 T 02:15, 8 December 2005 (UTC) <--note new "admin gold" sig :-D
Welcome to the Welcoming Committee
[edit]I'm starting to welcome new members to the Welcoming Committee. (Ironic, isn't it?) You should be familiar with helping other users since you're an Esperanzan, so you should have no problem with welcoming newcomers. Remember to customize your welcome messages so that the newbies don't feel like they're being welcomed by a welcome-bot. Have a nice day (or night, since I don't know what time zone you're in). --TantalumTelluride 04:57, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
- That's a nice, unique welcome template. I'm thinking about overhauling mine because it's so similar to {{Welcome}}. I usually try to add a personal touch by looking through the new users' contribs and suggesting WikiProjects and other community pages that they might be interested in. --TantalumTelluride 18:38, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
Princess Royal move
[edit]I noticed that the Princess Royal move proposal was six months old. I've removed it and the subsequent votes (both opposed — yours and mine). I hope that is OK with you. There was no point in leaving a renaming process that had sat there, ignored by everyone, for half a year. FearÉIREANN\(caint) 21:21, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
Liechtenstein
[edit]I am about halfway through. Got to Princess Tatjana, and had to take a break. I will finish when I get home tonight. Right now inserting style infobox in Liechtenstein family. Actually having fun too.Prsgoddess187 21:27, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
Been here a few months. Usually stick to the small stuff, spelling and other minor edits. But saw Liechtenstein (they need a shorter name) family the other day and almost lost it. But working through it. Haven't found any double redirects yet, but I will watch for them. Thanks for the offer of help, always good to know someone has your back. Prsgoddess187 21:35, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for the encouragement!!! Prsgoddess187 21:40, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
I will take care of that. Promise. Prsgoddess187 21:43, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for all of your help today!!Prsgoddess187 02:36, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
I know it has nothing to do with Liechtenstein, but could you check out the style infobox I made for Japan here. Thanks Prsgoddess187 16:55, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
My RfA
[edit]Gryffindor, thanks for your support on my RfA. The final count was 46/0/0. I hope I'll live up to your faith in me in my use of the mop and bucket. Please accept this wikithanks as a token of my gratitude ;) --bainer (talk) 23:54, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
Thanks For The Intervention
[edit]
Yeah, I just assumed that I had lost face and would have to do things that would make me have to leave in order to make things work out and blah, blah, blah. Thanks for the intervention, here's a barn star for your trouble, my friend. Please let me know if I can help out in the future. karmafist 04:54, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
- Actually, there is something you can do, I'm dealing with a positive troll(gnome?) at WP:SFD who's trying to delete {{New Hampshire-stub}} basically just to make things more difficult for people at WP:NH it seems. Please help me out if you can, there's too much invisible red tape as it is around here. karmafist 16:00, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
- I know huh? I just did the same thing with {{United Kingdom-stub}} as a redirect(more or less) to {{UK-stub}}. What's the point in making it harder to stub? I assume i'll have more issues with the cruftinators on this and other redundant stubs for newbies who aren't used to stubs. karmafist 17:22, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
New Hampshire-stub
[edit]From your comment on the vote on this stub redirect I think you may have mistaken what is being voted on there. {{New Hampshire-stub}} is a redirect to the stub template {{NewHampshire-stub}}. Only the redirect is being considered for deletion, not the template. The redirect has been nominated because it contradicts the naming guidelines for stub templates.
