Technical news

  • Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.

Hi, I just wanted to dig a little more, but I thought maybe if I added a different link, it would be better? It's fine if it's not.23:50, 20 June 2021 (UTC)23:50, 20 June 2021 (UTC)23:50, 20 June 2021 (UTC)~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jambalaya Hut (talkcontribs)

@Jambalaya Hut: Not unless you can show that the videos are notable, and since your article about them has so far been rejected multiple times for lack of evidence of notability, I'd say no, a different link won't help. General Ization Talk 23:53, 20 June 2021 (UTC)
    • Well, what about the IMDB article? it's not reliable, is it?

On Surfside article

Symonowicz is of Polish origin but his citizenship is Lithuanian, what is mentioned in the article ("As well, there is no information on when did he come to the United States from Lithuania, the country of his citizenship". Per WP:RSBLOG, blogs may be acceptable sources if the writers are professionals. In this case, Voice of Generation is one of the most well-known and professional Substack blogs. Thank you. --90.138.58.126 (talk) 15:45, 25 June 2021 (UTC)

WP:RSBLOG requires that the writer be identified in order to determine their professional status for the source to be considered reliable. The source of this story is only identified in its byline by the name of the blog. Find a reliable source or omit. So far, I can find no mention of Symonowicz outside of WP:SPS, and many of the claims concerning him are highly dubious. General Ization Talk 15:54, 25 June 2021 (UTC)

Emergent Biosolutions Chikungunya vaccine development

Hello General Ization. You didn't give me a chance to finish my edit. I posted a couple of sentences, then had to check another reference and you asked me what's the relevance? Emergent is developing a chikungunya vaccine and a 2-year clinical trial showed good results. I put the two sentences in on the disease to give readers a link and a very brief intro to the problem. I'm pretty new here. Did I do something wrong? Bert Bowler (talk) 15:49, 21 June 2021 (UTC)

@Bert Bowler: Generally, you want to establish the relevance of new content at the same time you make an edit that introduces that content. No one here is a mind reader, and we don't know when -- or if -- you'll return to provide that context. Next time, I'd wait until you have all the information together before adding the content. General Ization Talk 15:52, 21 June 2021 (UTC)
Thanks. Good suggestion. Should I try again?Bert Bowler (talk) 15:54, 21 June 2021 (UTC)
By all means. Also, I did check the NYT citation but found no mention of Emergent there; so an intro to the problem only heightened the need for clarification as to relevance. General Ization Talk 15:55, 21 June 2021 (UTC)
General Ization. You are right. I used the NYT article for background on the disease only and establishing the serious problem it is becoming. I also followed the directions at the top of the "Edit Conflict" response page, re-edited and published changes only to have another "Edit Conflict" appear. Do not know what else to do and I have to sign off for now. I'll save my information and post it another day. Thanks for your interest and the clarity you provide to a new editor. Bert Bowler (talk) 16:12, 21 June 2021 (UTC)
@Bert Bowler: Edit conflict only means that you and I, and/or someone else, were trying to save (publish) changes to the article simultaneously (or more accurately that someone else has saved changes since you started editing it), and only one set of changes can be saved at a time. I am not editing the article, so you should be able to make and save your changes. Generally when I receive an EC notice, I copy my changes to the clipboard, cancel, and try again in a few minutes. You don't need to sign off to clear the condition. General Ization Talk 16:51, 21 June 2021 (UTC)
This is a good reason to not keep the editing window open while you research other changes you may want to make. More than likely, someone else will come along and make a change in the meantime, increasing the likelihood that you will encounter an edit conflict. Either publish your changes in small batches, or wait to make your changes until you have the information ready. General Ization Talk 16:58, 21 June 2021 (UTC)

Thanks, General Ization, appreciate the information. Working in Wikipedia can be complex; the more I experience the more competent (I hope) I get. Bert Bowler (talk) 13:42, 22 June 2021 (UTC)

@Kahlores: I have left the Possible causes section demoted under Background, as it seemed to be working OK there for the time being, and was being frequently updated as new information emerged. Perhaps when and if updates to the section slow down we should reconsider its location. General Ization Talk 16:42, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

National Institute of Agricultural Marketing

Hello !! Hope you are fine and safe.. Kindly write update of the page National Institute of Agricultural Marketing (NIAM) page in Wikipedia since whenever we try to edit its been erased. Last you have also deleted the whole content, I don't no how to update this and This is about a Government of India Institute under Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers welfare. So please update the page since you seem to be expertise on this and add all details offered in the institute like their PGDM Agribusiness management and et all. Boobruh007 (talk) 14:36, 7 July 2021 (UTC)

@Boobruh007: As has been previously explained, any updates to this page will need to be a) non-promotional in nature and b) sourced to published, independent, reliable sources (i.e., not brochures or media releases produced by NIAM). Unless you are affiliated with or employed by NIAM (so have a conflict of interest), you are perfectly capable of doing so if you are able and willing to comply with these policies. If not, the article will remain as it is until someone else, who is, is interested in updating it and does so. I am not particularly interested. General Ization Talk 14:44, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
Also, if you are the same editor as Arun3008, you should immediately stop using one or the other of these accounts, or at least make no edits to that article with this one. Please see WP:SOCK. General Ization Talk 14:47, 7 July 2021 (UTC)

                 Current and upcoming events

September Drive: Our current backlog-elimination drive is open until 23:59 on 30 September (UTC) and is open to all copy editors. Sign up today!

Drive and Blitz reports

June Blitz: From 20 to 26 June, 6 participating editors claimed 16 copy edits, focusing on requests and articles tagged in March and April. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

July Drive: Almost 575,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 24 people who signed up, 18 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

August Blitz: From 15 to 21 August, we copy edited articles tagged in April and May 2021 and requests. 9 participating editors completed 17 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Other news

June election: Jonesey95 was chosen to continue as lead coordinator, assisted by Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis.

New maintenance template added to our project scope: After a short discussion in June, we added {{cleanup tense}} to the list of maintenance templates that adds articles to the Guild's copy editing backlog categories. This change added 198 articles, spread over 97 months of backlog, to our queue. We processed all of those articles except for those from the three or four most recent months during the July backlog elimination drive (Here's a link to a "tense" discussion during the drive).

Progress report: As of 18:26, 24 September 2021 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have processed 468 requests since 1 January and there were 60 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog of articles tagged for copy-editing stood at 433 (see monthly progress graph above).

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Michelle Williams (actress), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Michelle Williams. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Hi, I just wanted to make sure you are aware that User:Green Bruce has ignored your instruction on his talk page and has edited User:Cardei012597's user page three more times since your warning. His repeated bizarre edits to that page, along with his seeming inability to understand article sourcing and image licensing requirements, resulting in almost every one of his article space edits being reverted, makes me wonder if this is a WP:CIR situation. • Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
  • The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.

Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2021 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:07, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

Robert Durst revision

Howdy General Ization. I understand that you were trying to remove an unsupported quote from the article. However, your execution seems odd to me. You revert to my edit has the summation "This quote is not supported by any of the cited sources." Yet I did not add the quote; I fixed a typo (specifically, a space between the end of a word and a comma). I would encourage you to be more precise with where you place reverts, not only to prevent confusion but also to help the editor of your target improve. If you take the time to revise the work of the actual editor, they will undoubtedly benefit from reading your summary/rationale and may become a better contributor for it. Thank you for your contributions and specifically your work to improve this article, and please have a lovely day/night! ifny (talk) 11:37, 6 December 2021 (UTC)

@Ifny: Perhaps you didn't notice that I ultimately reverted the addition of the quote in its entirety, which was the edit made by another editor just prior to yours. It's often a good idea to review the entire page history, including subsequent edits, prior to addressing another editor concerning a specific reversion. General Ization Talk 17:13, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for your thoughtful and prompt response. I did indeed notice this. However, I don't think it is relevant to my questioning of the placement of your edit summary, which appeared on my teensy edit instead of the editor who might benefit. I'm not suggesting action, just that you may wish to take this into consideration in future. Again, thank you for your energy to improve the article, and for having this brief aside with me as well.ifny (talk) 05:53, 8 December 2021 (UTC)

Unless you supply a reliable source for it, your claim is presumed to be a hoax and you are likely to be blocked from editing because of it quite soon. General Ization Talk 03:48, 10 December 2021 (UTC)

I can assure you, that's not going to happen - we should err on the side of caution with these things (Twitter is not known for rational and measured discussion...!) -- TNT (talk • she/they) 04:45, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
Many things in life are ironic, Grasshopper, but this is not likely to be one of them. No one gets to declare someone dead here without citing a reliable source, and this editor cited none. General Ization Talk 04:45, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
Yes, but you both were involved in an edit war with 3 changes against each other in a row, which regardless of who was right or wrong, is an offense that always carries a timeout of 48 hours.Gloern (talk) 04:51, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
You'll find that the provisions of WP:EW3 do not apply to unsourced or poorly sourced biographical information about heretofore living persons, especially declarations of death. Feel free to take it up at WP:BLPN if you doubt me. But first see WP:BLPREMOVE and WP:NOT3RR. General Ization Talk 04:53, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
Yeah, no you are mostly wrong. First off your second link is a mistake, it is only a discussion on living people, not a page about policies. But you are mistaken about the policy, what you should have done after the second since you clearly felt that you were in the right and it was unreliable sourcing was reporting it as it says in the 3RR page where the 7 exemptions are listed and the last one clearly says:

7) Removing contentious material that is libelous, biased, unsourced, or poorly sourced according to Wikipedia's biographies of living persons (BLP) policy. What counts as exempt under BLP can be controversial. Preferably you should choose reporting to the BLP noticeboard instead of relying on this exemption. But I doubt anyone will bother reporting you for 3RR, so you shouldn't have any issue, just be careful, you were technically on the wrong side.Gloern (talk) 05:07, 10 December 2021 (UTC)

Friend, I know what it says. And I also know which "side" I'm on. Thanks for the advice. General Ization Talk 05:09, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
I am not sure how you are able to respond do fast, and I don't think you do know since I literally QUOTED it and it does not agree with you, but there is no way to prove it to you, so I will bow out.Gloern (talk) 05:10, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
I am able to respond so fast, and I am confident in my understanding of Wikipedia policies, because I have been doing this for 15 years and know a little bit about it. Thanks for letting it go. General Ization Talk 05:13, 10 December 2021 (UTC)

Why is stating that Emma Portner uses they/them and she/her as pronouns considered to be poorly sourced when the source is literally Emma's own Instagram profile?

As stated in the question, I would like to know in simplest terms why it's considered poorly sourced? I would just like it if you can help me understand your reasoning. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A00:23C5:A212:3B00:2562:CA2:F578:B36C (talk) 05:49, 11 December 2021 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors December 2021 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the December GOCE newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since September 2021.

                 Current and upcoming events

Election time: Our end-of-year election of coordinators opened for nominations on 1 December and will close on 15 December at 23:59 (UTC). Voting opens at 00:01 the following day and will continue until 31 December at 23:59, just before "Auld Lang Syne". Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

December Blitz: We have scheduled a week-long copy-editing blitz for 12 to 18 December. Sign up now!

Drive and Blitz reports

September Drive: Almost 400,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 27 people who signed up, 21 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

October Blitz: From 17 to 23 October, we copy edited articles tagged in May and June 2021 and requests. 8 participating editors completed 26 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

November Drive: Over 350,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 21 people who signed up, 14 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

Other news

It is with great sadness that we report the death on 19 November of Twofingered Typist, who was active with the Guild almost daily for the past several years. His contributions long exceeded the thresholds for the Guild's highest awards, and he had a hand in innumerable good and featured article promotions as a willing collaborator. Twofingered Typist also served as a Guild coordinator from July 2019 to June 2021. He is sorely missed by the Wikipedia community.

Progress report: As of 30 November, GOCE copyeditors have completed 619 requests in 2021 and there were 51 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog stood at 946 articles tagged for copy-editing (see monthly progress graph above).

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis.

@Ashleygoldxo: See WP:BURDEN. It is your responsibility, not mine or any other editor's, to find and cite sources to support the content you add. If you do not, and it is contentious information about a living person (such as marriage or death), it is our responsibility to remove it. General Ization Talk 01:35, 13 December 2021 (UTC)

In response to "Also, you were adding the organizations to a list article. That is a separate issue from determining whether or not an organization is notable and deserving of an article. General Ization Talk 03:08, 15 December 2021 (UTC)"

The editor who deleted my entry (and numerous others that are properly cited) did so because they do not have articles, which is not a valid reason to delete an addition to a list; especially when the page specifies that links are the only thing necessary. That is why the edit cites WP:NEXIST. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jediwashington (talkcontribs) 03:24, 15 December 2021 (UTC)

@Jediwashington: I assure you that the editor who reverted your edits is much more familiar with Wikipedia policies and practices than you currently are. WP:NEXIST pertains to the evaluation of notability, not to the addition of entries in list articles. Their reversions were correct. See WP:WTAF and WP:BURDEN. (talk page stalker)Even if consensus on that list were to include entries without articles (which has not been the case for many years) you were adding completely unsourced entries. Meters (talk) 03:31, 15 December 2021 (UTC)
