McWatters Family origins

[edit]

Hello Finlay, do you have any knowledge on the history of the McWalters family name?

I can see from reading some very interesting articles that you have written, you have a vast knowledge on all things Scottish.

My research into the McWalters (McWatters) name has had varying levels of success.

Some say the name is from Mac Auters ( Norman / Gaelic), or that the name came from Caithness and the family hung around with Clan SINCLAIR. Another variation says it comes from son of Walter. But I believe Walters son ( Walter fitz Alan ) became the royal line of Stewarts?

Hope you give me a lead to any further information on the origins of the surname.

Cheers Steve McWatters - Australia

Reference desk warning

[edit]

I have no real idea where you are coming from - the answer appeared to me to be borderline soapboxing, based on opinion, and without and factual basis. I'll bring this up on the talk page.94.72.205.11 (talk) 16:38, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As I said, you're free to ignore it, not to remove it. -- Finlay McWalterTalk 16:39, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Please read what I've posted on the reference desk talk page. As far as I can tell the answer was pure opinion and possibly soapboxing - is that ok. Why am I the bad guy?94.72.205.11 (talk) 16:49, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Michael Tugendhat

[edit]

Hi, and sorry for never replying to yr message on my talk page w/r/t Judge Tugendhat: i was away travelling when i first saw it and meant to reply when i got back, and then i promptly forgot because the orange message, of course, didn't appear. Thanks for the kind words regarding the article. In truth, i'd pretty much forgotten i'd started it and was quite surprised at how much is there when i saw it again. i shall take yr advice and move it over to the mainspace now. Thanks again! tomasz. 00:10, 30 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that. I've added what little info I had that you hadn't already found, and I think it's a pretty respectable article. Unfortunately we don't have really anything about his legal career for the thirty-some years before he became a judge, but refs are hard to come by. Worse, my contagious interest in Tugendhats has spread again (I came to Michael having read a book about MI5 which mentioned the assassination attempt on his brother). On researching Michael I've come across their father Georg: an Austrian army officer and economist and lawyer who fled the nazis, was suspected of being a German spy despite his jewish background, and founded a successful oil refinery. More research to do... -- Finlay McWalterTalk 11:09, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism on the page "Geography of Spain"

[edit]

"If he removed references, why does your revert of him not restore any references? Why is the entire climate section of this article supported by so few references? There are whole paragraphs claiming climate zones, temperatures, and so forth, with no supporting reference at all. You're calling his removal of File:Climates of Spain.png vandalism, but it has no references either. Why not? If I were to reduce the climate section now to material that's supported by reliable sources it would be two sentences long. Why should any of this unreferenced stuff be trusted? "

Are you sure to have read properly the article ? The reference is clearly indicated (number 2) !!!!

http://www.schweizerbart.de/resources/downloads/paper_free/55034.pdf

This reference is always deleted by the user. I make a new request.--92.161.48.209 (talk) 20:45, 6 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That paper supports the Koppen classification claim. It contains a small blocky picture of the climate regions of Spain, quite unlike the detailed picture you claim is accurate. For the picture to be referenced, references must be on its image page and a heck of a lot more detailed than that. For contended material, which this is, it should be supported by multiple independent reliable sources. -- Finlay McWalterTalk 20:52, 6 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
What are you talking about ? There is a reference, full stop. You challenge it by a question of scale, but the map is correct according to the source. In return, the vandal does not bring any source or reference. Just deletion...Are you trying to protect him ? Do you know this guy ?--92.161.48.209 (talk) 21:00, 6 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You came to ANI to ask administrators' opinions. You got mine. You don't like it: I'll have to live with that, as will you. If you want to prove the other guy wrong, find more and better sources. -- Finlay McWalterTalk 21:10, 6 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
"Find more or better sources" : ie suppressing a source is better than providing a source. Awesome.

CIA world factbook

[edit]

Re http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Miscellaneous#Font_used_in_regional_maps_of_CIA_Factbook.3F

Hello again. I've acquired the fonts you mentioned in your replies, but none of them look to match up with the fonts on the maps. How have you gathered the information about what fonts are used, and is it possible the fonts were already rasterized by the time you fetched said information from the PDF? I look forward to solving this with your help. 88.91.84.31 (talk) 11:47, 25 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

To me it appears Helvetica is the most used for nearly everything, although I struggle to find the correct oblique font. I can not locate the other fonts you specified. 88.91.84.31 (talk) 12:02, 25 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I opened the PDF file in Okular (but other viewers like evince and Acrobat-reader work much the same) and had it list the embedded fonts, which it lists the font file names. I don't know of any easy way to determine the identities of any fonts, if any, that were rasterised rather than embedded. -- Finlay McWalterTalk 13:27, 25 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I can't figure out how to revert it since the image covers up the tabs I'd need to use. Since it was your link at the ref desk that led me there, I thought I'd ask you to help. Dobermanji (talk) 07:52, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed; you may need to clear your cache when viewing an affected page (the template, and its redirect, are linked from ~650 places). I've protected the template and its redirect. -- Finlay McWalterTalk 08:12, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:Wfm lochgellyband 1890 large.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Wfm lochgellyband 1890 large.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy.
