  • wrote 3 books, each with their own specific themes. 1.Butchers Crossing (1960) Western 2. Stoner (1995) Academic -as it is takes place at an academy 3.Augustus(1972); historical novel
  • Enjoyed exploring the mendacity when convention starts to control material in the story and problematical characters.
  • Story takes place in the early 1970s,

Mookse and the Gripes:

  • Williams is an overlooked american author, but has picked up a following as years have passed. (pg1)
  • The American Dream and the faults that lie within it pg(2)
  • Young main character goes out to find an origin related to nature after hearing what Ralph Waldo Emerson had to say in a lecture while he was still in college. (pg3)
  • Many references to Moby Dick, Miller (cattle hunter) becomes more like Captain Ahab. In the end looks at all that he has lost over his obsession. (pg4)

Asylum review:

  • Williams considers Butchers Crossing (1960) his first novel, and completely disregards his actual first novel Nothing But the Night (1948). pg1
  • Battles against the landscape, animals, and each other.

Express review:

  • Willaim Andrews (main chracter) comes from the streets of Boston, where he has been studying had Harvard for three years. Decides to drop out and try life in the prairie country of the midwest.
  • Novel takes place in 1870s
  • "An Anti-Western, antidote to heroic tales of bravery in the wild. An American story, but is about the horror of it all and not the heroics." (pg2).
