Thanks!

Thank you for your feedback on the teahouse, I really appreciate people who give me any advice!  Thanks! Geardona (talk to me?) 23:09, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

North Berwick

Just wanted to say thankyou for your deletions. As I said, I'm only trying to keep stuff updated, and in some kind of standard form. Station History is a title, and both should be in Capitals And the flag, well everyone has that, apart now from North Berwick? It would be nice to see some history of you contributing, not just deleting stuff that offends you. Ojsyork (talk) 12:30, 12 January 2024 (UTC)

@Ojsyork: This article just happens to be on my watchlist, probably because I once had to remove some copyright-violating material from it and wanted to make sure that it wasn't readded. I'm sorry if other lifeboat-station articles do things differently, but it's those articles that need to be changed if they're not conforming to WP guidelines. Only the first words (and proper names) should be capitalized in section headings, and flag icons should generally be omitted in infobox entries. Deor (talk) 13:17, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
I suppose what troubles me,
is that there are far too many people nit picking about minor details, the odd space here and there, a capital letter when it should be lower case...while not being bothered that the content is actually valid, or actually making a positive contribution.
I'm concerned with updating, keeping it valid, making it present in the same way as all the other stations to get some consistency. 1000's of updates, new lifeboats, numbers, etc etc. The format might not quite match someones view of what Wiki should be, might not be perfect in every way, but despite everything and everyone, I'm still trying to make it better.
And here you are , You're just going to amend whatever you don't like ad infinitum, regardless of whether it matches 237 other station pages. Just because you can. Which is just ridiculous.
Ojsyork (talk) 14:34, 12 January 2024 (UTC)

Comment from Deletion for Ubiquity: It's the other way around.

I can't seem to get reply to reply directly to your comment, but wanted to copy and paste it here to avoid confusion on the deletion page:

It is actually the other way around:

I was compliant to the recommendation of this being directed to Wiktionary, as one option, and wrote the quotes section for wikt:ubiquitous, in case that becomes the decided option.

Thanks for commenting that out: it was a test, and I should have deleted it after use. — The Anome (talk) 20:15, 7 February 2024 (UTC)

You moved this article even though the majority of the sources use "Lung River" or "River Lung", seldom just the name "Lung", so moving it to a disambiguation title seems wrong. ww2censor (talk) 23:12, 18 February 2024 (UTC)

My main concern was that the previous title "Lung river", with lowercase river, did not conform to WP:NCRIVER. I certainly considered both of those options, and almost decided on "River Lung", but I thought I found sufficient sources using just "Lung" to justify my choice. As WP:NCRIVER says, "When common usage does not include the word 'River', but disambiguation is required (e.g. the river Inn in central Europe), parenthetical, non-capitalized 'river' should be used: Inn (river)." If you think my choice was poor, you're certainly welcome to move the article to the title you think most justified (there would be a couple of double redirects to clear up). Thanks for your edit. Assure you I was going to get around to fixing that shortly (was working the act. approx. Route 571 & 547 coordinates for the infobox in question). Kieronoldham (talk) 02:25, 25 February 2024 (UTC)

Hello Again

Hello Deor This isn't a complaint. More a bit of concern for you. You haven't done anything to upset me, I hope I don't upset you.

I just wanted to say I spent about 8 hours creating the Douglas Lifeboat Page. I thought it was pretty well there, not perfect, needs the odd tweek when I've sat and reflected. For YOUR own wellbeing, may I respectfully suggest that if you are jumping in on a brand new page less than 10 minutes old, just to add minor changes, then you seriously need to re-evaluate where you're heading in life. I appreciate this may be why you get up on a morning, but seriously - IT DOESN'T MATTER THAT MUCH. I worry for you. Please think about it. With very best wishes. MartinOjsyork (talk) 14:02, 6 March 2024 (UTC)

@Ojsyork: You don't have to worry about me. I noticed your article because I've had that title watchlisted since I requested that a previous article at the title be deleted as a copyright violation. I think, however, that you're misreading MOS:INSTITUTIONS; look particularly at the bullet point reading "Generic words for institutions, organizations, companies, etc., and rough descriptions of them (university, college, hospital, church, high school) do not take capitals." You also may want to read WP:OWN. Deor (talk) 16:18, 7 March 2024 (UTC)
I must admit, I find it incredibly frustrating that someone jumps in on a new page after only minutes. I believe it is frowned upon within Wiki, as it only serves to completely annoy the creator. They're right. I would prefer a bit of chat first.
I do worry that some folk are completely obsessed with the minutia, instead of concentrating on the content being right. I feel that if I put "My Cock is 1ft long", nobody would worry about the text, but someone would pull me up for not using a non-breakable space!
As previously discussed with yourself, I'm on a mission to try to improve all the RNLI pages, but I really am at the point where I'm likely to walk away soon, and not continue, as the level of nitpicking is just way beyond what is reasonable.
I've had one guy completely rewrite everything I added on one page - if he's that keen, why didn't he do it first!
Regarding Institution, I completely agree that in general conversation, institution should be in lower case. BUT - when it is used as a shortened form of a Name, then it should be Capitalised. I can't keep putting Royal National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck, and RNIPLS looks naff, so Institution it is. I trust you'll let that one go. Nobody else seems worried.
I can cope with most of the other tweeks, probably quite correct.
MartinOjsyork (talk) 17:00, 7 March 2024 (UTC)
PS. Regarding WP:OWN
I'm quite aware that its not MY page.
But I will defend what I think is right and wrong.
I would like to get all the pages in the same kind of format. 99% are all the same, and then someone comes along, says that's wrong, and just changes that one page. I'm all for collaboration, and refinement to make things better, but some of this minutia detail stuff just seems a bit pointless. Get a life.
I realise I'm not great at Hyphens, as I just can't be bothered typing Alt 0150 every time when I'm mid flow, and I don't have an endash on my keyboard.
Someone set about changing them in all the Station histories, which were ALL the same, right or wrong, that's how it was. Wiki does allow things to be all the same, right or wrong. I think he did seven before he got bored. I know if I go and change them back, he'll revisit and change them all again, but it means 7 are different to all the rest. And Douglas.

Not understanding why you felt the need to change this Archbishop of Canterbury when its an article title? Ojsyork (talk) 17:00, 5 April 2024 (UTC)

@Ojsyork: If you look at that article, you'll see that "archbishop" and "archbishop of Canterbury" consistently begin with a lowercase a. See MOS:JOBTITLE. Deor (talk) 20:09, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
Not understanding why you changed it, I've looked at it in some detail, and, its not consistent.
Some wiki articles have archbishop of Canterbury
Some have Archbishop of Canterbury. Clergy
If you look back at the history of Archbishop of York for example, the name is constantly switched nearly every week. I don't know why? I'm sure this isn't happening for other religious leaders, such as Dalai Lama, Ayatollah, Rabbi etc etc.
So I cannot rely on what is found on Wiki.
As a general rule, I would expect it to be Capitalised, as it is someones Title, much like Prime Minister, President, and in this case, a high status title.
According to Grammarly.
"A proper noun is a specific (i.e., not generic) name for a particular person, place, or thing. Proper nouns are always capitalized in English, no matter where they fall in a sentence. Because they endow nouns with a specific name, they are also sometimes called proper names.
What is a proper noun?
A proper noun is a type of noun that refers to a specific person, place, or thing by its name. Proper noun examples include:
Serena Williams
São Paulo
Lord of the Rings
However, regardless of the rights and wrongs, on which it is likely that we will never agree, the linked article is headed Archbishop of Canterbury, and there is no reason for you to change my reference to this, just as I would not expect you to change Douglas Lifeboat Station.
MartinOjsyork (talk) 20:48, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
I would further add, from MOS:Jobtitle
They are capitalized only in the following cases:
When followed by a person's name to form a title, i.e., when they can be considered to have become part of the name: President Nixon, not president Nixon; Pope John XXIII, not pope John XXIII.
When a title is used to refer to a specific person as a substitute for their name during their time in office, e.g., the King, not the king (referring to Charles III); the Pope, not the pope (referring to Francis).
MartinOjsyork (talk) 20:52, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
@Ojsyork: Every Wikipedia article title by necessity begins with an initial capital letter; that has nothing to do with capitalization in running prose. I fail to see the relevance of your most recent addition above, and I wonder why you're xo combative over such minor points of style. Deor (talk) 21:04, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
I hadn't thought I was being particularly combative.
Just trying to discuss with you in a calm manner, why you're changing my work.
But you won't listen, even when someone comes up with a valid reasons supporting what they did.
There is no good case to change Archbishop to archbishop.
There is especially no good case for changing Archbishop of Canterbury to archbishop of Canterbury, when all I have done is copy what is already on Wiki.
If its such a minor point, why go upsetting things in the first place?
But no worries. It's time to move on.
MartinOjsyork (talk) 22:09, 5 April 2024 (UTC)

Why?

Just why? That message was pure WP:NOTFORUM - plus your rollback also reverted my fix of a link that was not working because it was including the closing parenthesis as part of it. – 2804:F14:80C8:4701:7054:6078:F91D:3B4A (talk) 20:27, 26 April 2024 (UTC)

Undoing your deletion of the IP post was my mistake; not paying enough attention, I somehow thought that you had added that post. The addition of a closing nowiki/ tag without a corresponding opening tag, however, did nothing, and the link works correctly for me without it. Sorry about reverting your reversion, though. Deor (talk) 20:48, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
It happens, I understand. On the nowiki tag, it's a self-closing nowiki tag, like the documentation of {{Nowiki}} says it does if you provide not parameters to it. And it's probably working because I re-added it. – 2804:F14:80C8:4701:7054:6078:F91D:3B4A (talk) 20:58, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
Better example, though about wikilinks instead: Help:Wikitext#Blend link. – 2804:F14:80C8:4701:7054:6078:F91D:3B4A (talk) 21:08, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
