Thank you so much! I have been contributing to Wikipedia since 2009 and this is my first barnstar. I'm working on similar maps for each territory, following their evolution through the end of the Second Temple period. I hope to upload them in the next few weeks. Hasmonean family tree

[edit]

Hello DEGA MD, first of all, I would like to compliment you on your efforts creating svg files. The reason I reverted you because you used BC which is against WP:ERA guidelines on your Hasmonean family tree. Consensus to change the era style was achieved here. I personally would not add dates due to academics having different opinions on the length of one's rule, plus, there were five sons of John Hyrcanus; the name of the fifth son is unknown though. Thank you. Jerium (talk) 14:05, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Jerium. Thank you for your feedback. I have no problem changing the era style to BCE in the SVG file. Still, I think it's important to have a chronological reference in order to understand the historical details mentioned in the articles related to the Hasmonean dynasty. I have included the dates source in the file description. I will explore the best way to include the fifth son of John Hyrcanus. DEGA MD (talk) 19:47, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
DEGA MD Dates shouldn't be added, sources differ on reigns. Plus, there might be possible future consensus (WP:CRYSTALBALL) to change the era-style of the page (It's a back-and-forth thing). Here's a good example on what your graph should look like to avoid the issues I just mentioned: File:Genealogy of the kings of Israel and Judah.svg. Jerium (talk) 19:57, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree, dates in the graph serve a similar purpose than the ones in the infobox or in the lead section of each article with the advantage that you can compare them with other dynasty members without going to another page, wich is really helpful when reading a biography. You can find numerous examples of family trees that include reign dates here, here and here.
The family tree you mentioned is hardly comparable given that it appears to be an original research (doesn't provide any source) and dates for most of the period aluded are controvertial, whith a significant amount of scholars doubting about the historicity of the Bible.
Given that I solved the problem you indicated when reverting my contributions, I kindly ask you to restore the file to the articles where it was previously. DEGA MD (talk) 21:39, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You haven’t resolved anything, and dates are not based on infoboxes, they’re based not only on sources but consensus as well. Most family trees you linked are not even being used on the English Wikipedia. I won’t restore, and ANI will be the next corse of action if you decide revert war. Jerium (talk) 22:40, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have never claimed that dates are "based on infoboxes". The purpose of this family tree is to visually summarize dynastic kinship and chronological facts mentioned in articles related to the Hasmonean dynasty. I have intentionally used a high quality contemporary tertiary source that aims to provide a consensus from several primary and secondary sources.
Wikipedia does not have a guideline stating that family trees should not include reign dates. You have not mentioned a single example of a reign date that would be so inaccurate or polemical as to warrant the graph's exclusion from Wikipedia. I will be happy to explore a consensus or include an uncertainty indicator if you provide evidence that there is a specific date in which sources of similar quality disagree with.
