• Teahouse serves over 700 new editors in six months on Wikipedia! Since February 27, 741 new editors have participated at the Teahouse. The Q&A board and the guest intro pages are more active than ever.

• Automatic invites are doing the trick: 50% more new editors visiting each week. Ever since HostBot's automated invite trial phase began we've seen a boost in new editor participation. Automating a baseline set of invitations also allows Teahouse hosts to focus on serving hot cups of help to guests, instead of spending countless hours inviting.

Adopt-a-user

Hi Charlesdrakew. I'm leaving you this message because you have previously been involved as an adopter with Wikipedia's Adopt-a-user program. A clean-up of this program is currently underway, and as part of the process I am trying to find out who is and isn't still interested in remaining an adopter.

If you would prefer not to be part of the adoption program anymore, you need do nothing; when the overhaul of the project is completed your name will be removed from the list of active adopters. However, if you have current adoptees, an active adoption school or an interest in adopting in the near future, then please let us know by signing here.

If you want to remain in the project and can currently take on more adoptees, there is a serious backlog at Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user; it would be enormously helpful if you could take on one or two of the users there. Hi, you recently removed my contribution on how to see the British Museum citing that the BM page is not a guide. Hello Polojam. As you are new around here you will not know that being "useful" is not enough reason to include external links in this encyclopedia. You may find it helpful to read What Wikipedia is not and WP:USEFUL. As there is no indication of who publishes the linked site I assume it is self-published which also makes it ineligible under WP:External links.--Charles (talk) 13:32, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

Post Deletion

Hi there

I was just curious as to why you deleted my factual edit of the Dorking Wikipedia page. Well for a start you deleted most of the "about" template at the top of the page. Then you added unsourced and trivial material lacking any coherent grammar, capitalisation or puntuation. It is not my job to look into the Dorking records but it is your responsibility to provide reliable sources for any fact you add to Wikipedia. Other than that it is hard to see how the presence of a homosexual man would be notable.--Charles (talk) 22:08, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Hey

If you check out my photo Uploads on commons you'll find I'm in your backyard (not literally, at least I hope not) probably won't get a chance to meet in real life before I leave on Friday but thought it would be polite to let you know. Ironically the first thing related to my editing on Wikipedia I saw in Sussex wasn't Butlins but was the Coastliner 700 and seeing it has done little to convince me of it's notability. Hi Stuart. i don't want to reveal too much about my back yard on here but I have e-mailed you. Good old Butlins. We took the children there some years ago to their Tropical Water World or some such name. The water temperature turned out to be rather subtropical though. As for those boxes on wheels with seats and an engine it astonishes me how involved some people get in them. Lengths listed to the nearest cm etc. Not that I have anything against them as public transport. Pease Pottage

Hi,

I was browsing the Pease Pottage page entry and made some changes to the links, deleting one that was invalid, one that was irrelevant, re-ordering them and adding a couple more interesting links. You have deleted them all, including most of those that were there before my amendments, with the comment "rv self-published sites per WP:EL". Can you explain what this means? As it happens, the one link that remains, to the Pease Pottage page on the Mid Sussex District Council website, is hopelessly out-of-date!

Hi Pottager. Yes I deleted the links because they did not meet Wikipedia's strict criteria for external links which you can read about here. Specifically they were self-published sites without cited sources or any editorial oversight, which makes them unreliable by Wikipedia standards. For a site to be linked it would also need to add something which would not already be covered in a Good Article.

Highland Cattle

Hi

You undid a correction to a picture of a Highland Cow which was captioned "A Highland Cattle" on the grounds that cattle can be singular or plural and it being impossible to tell its gender. Could I ask the basis for these assertions as according to Chambers:

I have been around cattle markets since I could walk and heard it used as both singular and plural although the singular usage may be uncommon. Wiktionary has it as usually plural but does not say it is exclusively so. I do not know of any other gender neutral singular word for bovines other than bovine. This is not Simple English and I think it adds to the richness of the project to include some more unusual and interesting terms.--Charles (talk) 20:03, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

I had explained "personal sites aren't used as sources" on his talk page, and his response was more or less "there's another website that I think is personal being used as a source, take that down or I'll continue to add mine." Worcester

Hi Charles,

I believe you have edited Worcester has an approximate population of 100,000 and changed the figure to 94,000. You will see further down the page on the right hand side beneath the population section it states that the mid-2011 estimate for the population of Worcester is 98,700 and therefore 100,000 is a much more accurate approximation than 94,000. The website below is evidence of the 98,700 figure. I'm not sure if I have done this right, but hope it reaches you!

Hi there. That is a useful resource you have linked here. It does however say that the Worcester City population for mid 2009 was 94,700. I had looked at the demography section but not the infobox and the infobox should be in synch with the body of the article. When the 2011 census figures are finally available we will be able to use those. Re. Swaffham

I understand the event was reported in the Eastern Daily Press when it occurred in 1990, but there is no online publication of this. The event remains well recalled throughout East Anglia, and is frequently referenced by Hill himself in current broadcasts of his TV show "You've Been Framed".

A reference does not have to be available online as long as it is genuine. How can we be sure this is not an urban myth propagated by Hill? It may be better to say he claims it happened. His references to the event are regular but oblique: he tends not to explain the events plainly, but make amusing bitter remarks operating as a kind of public in-joke; it is well understood locally. You would have to watch an episode of the show (if you enjoy the amalgamated kitsch and schadenfreude) to see what I mean. It’s currently airing on ITV. Clarify my line if you wish.

Yes, quite remarkable; hence I believe the noteworthiness. Though not enough for me to spend the day going though age old newspapers in some dusty cupboard miles away in Norwich. Understandably however, the event remains famous in local memory, and also is referred to by the subject himself in mass media. Repeating myself now, stop. I don’t contribute enough to warrant an account, but point taken. I’m not a fan of his TV work either, but some people seem to think he’s all that. Funny how that wiki photo makes it like some lost Taj Mahal. For me, one of the most memorable features of it is a duzzy great blackened figure of St. Michael with massive wings and a real whomping sword; he looks down at you over the entrance alongside the road.
