Michael Phillips (historian)

Here is what happened, and what you can remember in the future. You didn't make a mistake, but there was a complicated situation. You reviewed Draft:Michael Phillips (historian) and decided that it should be accepted, but there was a redirect at Michael Phillips (historian). You tagged the redirect for {{db-afc-move}}, which is often the right thing to do if there is a redirect blocking the acceptance. The problem is that the redirect had non-trivial history. There had been a previous version of a biography of Michael Phillips. I am not entirely sure why the article was then cut down to a redirect to his book. In any case, in the situation that acceptance of a draft is blocked by a redirect with non-trivial history, you need to request technical assistance. The draft needs to be accepted by what is called a round-robin move, which needs to be done by someone who has at least the page mover right, or by an administrator. I will inquire at the AFC talk page as to what the best way is to make that request. Do not tag a redirect for G6 if it has substantive history, which this one did. Normally they don't, but it is a good idea to check the history of the redirect before tagging it for G6. The deleting admin should also check to be sure that the redirect does not have substantive history. Robert McClenon (talk) 23:57, 11 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi BuySomeApples! Thanks for your review of my draft! Could you please provide more details regarding why the current sources are not considered reliable? The sources include from published books' databases, audio streaming providers, official journals of higher educational institutions, a governmental website, and an article on Forbes Women. I also believe that the nature of these sources speaks to the notability of the person. I would highly appreciate more guidance from you. I would also like to point out that the Russian-language version of this page has been live long ago and the English version has more diverse sources. Thank you! Hi @Moonman313: no prob! So, some websites can be "official" and describe something, without indicating notability. Goodreads, Spotify, Vimeo, Discogs and Concertarchives are great websites, but they aren't considered reliable sources and they don't contribute to notability. A person or band's website also doesn't indicate notability and usually isn't considered reliable. The same is true about some reliable sources, that either aren't indepth or aren't independent from the subject. This is the problem with interviews, and brief mentions on things like university websites.

Another problem is that the page has a lot of information that doesn't seem to have a reference, which I notice past reviewers have already explained to you. I really think reading all the reviewer comments and looking at the links in the decline message will help you figure out why your draft keeps getting declined. Resubmitting it without making any changes like you keep doing just wastes your time, and the reviewers'. BuySomeApples (talk) 19:31, 13 July 2022 (UTC)

Help with Draft: Sean Wheeler

Hello. Thank you for the review. I've been really trying my best to have all the necessary information, and sources to have the Sean Wheeler article approved, and up. Would you please help me in doing so? I do not know how the sources need to be cleaned up, like you suggested. I found quite a few sources, that I clearly included as references in the article, including printed sources (like Billboard and Indie Rocks Magazine), as well as online interviews with Sean Wheeler and a lot of the people mentioned in the article. Hi @Cachizalo: it's off to a good start, and sources like Billboard are great. However some of the sources shouldn't be used. IMDb is user generated, and isn't acceptable as a source, but 6 different IMDb pages are used as references. Ditto for Rate Your Music. The websites of Universal Production Music or Kingston Union Mfg also shouldn't be used, because they aren't considered to be independent or reliable. If information can only be cited using sources like these, it's better off being removed. It looks like a lot of the remaining sources are local coverage, but sometimes they be helpful. Look up WP:MUSICSOURCE for more information on what sources to use. I added an WP:AfC template to the top of the page, so once you're done you can submit it for review. Thank you for your reply and help. I used IMDB pages as references for the films and TV show that the artist has been a part of (to show him as part of the cast). Which other source for this part of the article would you recommend I check out/use? The Kingston Union Mfg page is the official page for the product that the artist endorses, and he is mentioned there... how should I reference this endorsement if not through the official product website? And finally, if I remove the information that can only be cited through these sources, will there be a problem with the article for not having enough information about the artist? @Cachizalo: I totally get why you wanted to use IMDb, it's just unfortunately not allowed as a source, ever. The problem with official product websites is that they're not independent. An independent source would look like a magazine article, news article, or book entry for example. If there isn't enough information to create a page without using sources which aren't allowed, then the page is rejected. That's usually how it's decided whether to keep a page or not. If you read WP:NMUSIC, WP:RS and WP:MUSICSOURCE, it'll answer all of your other questions. BuySomeApples (talk) 19:53, 14 July 2022 (UTC)

Thank you very much. I've started editing the article's info to find better sources, and delete the info to which I cannot find better sources. @Cachizalo: No, not really. Usually you should only add the official website or IMDb profile of the subject (ie Sean Wheeler), not a whole bunch of external links to sites or page that mention him. It doesn't add value to readers, and it isn't a good way to get around not being able to use them as sources. Look at WP:external links for more information on do's and don'ts. Hi, I recently tried submitting the above article for publication which was rejected by yourself on the rounds that "This submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article—that is, they do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject (see the guidelines on the notability of music-related topics). Before any resubmission, additional references meeting these criteria should be added (see technical help and learn about mistakes to avoid when addressing this issue). If no additional references exist, the subject is not suitable for Wikipedia."

How much 'coverage' does a person need? The subject of the article already has numerous published features in reliable independent secondary sources. I somehow get the impression that if the subject of an article is a 'performing artist' that unless they are internationally famous by eg, having a hit song, appearing as the main star of a film that was a box office success, are a 'Victoria's Secret Model, etc etc that they will never 'qualify'
