Tokyogirl79 hello I have changed my username with your guidance. Thank you for this. I am just ensuring the right info is out there. I am new to wikipedia. Regarding the Starkillers page I have no connection or contact with the original editors / other editors of the page whatsoever, nor have I contributed towards the page in any way. Whoever edited the page may have failed to meet some of the wiki guidelines. As you suggested I have tried to contact the admin who deleted the page but I havn't heard any response yet. Is there any help from your end the article can recieve? Maybe the original editors did not cite things properly or did not use appropriate language. Kiran chandani (talk) 03:46, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • You just recently posted on his talk page, so we would have to give him more time to answer the post. If he doesn't answer you can petition DRV for article re-creation in the mainspace, although it'd probably be better if you asked for it to be userfied and run through AfC. I might be able to get you an AfC copy, although you'd probably still have to run it through Postdlf or DRV before submitting it to the mainspace, though. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 04:04, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Tokyogirl79 thank you! so when you say re-creation you mean anyone can recreate it and put it up for AfC before it can go to mainspace? Also what is the undeletion process then? Sorry for so many questions new to wikipedia so just ensuring I have all the terminology right!

Starkillers and reliable sources

[edit]

Kiran – following on from postdlf's reply to you on his talk page, I thought I would add my own thoughts here, as it's disrespectful of me to keep butting in on his own talk page. Apart from the guidelines he has already suggested you look at, you might want to check out Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons#Reliable sources as well.

Basically, Wikipedia discourages the use of any self-published source by the person in question for use in an article about them. This includes not just his personal website, but also Facebook, Twitter or other social media that he may use – Wikipedia encourages material from independent third-party sources. Also, the notability guidelines talk about having reached at least one country's official national charts. Beatport, iTunes, etc. are not official national charts and therefore do not meet the notability guidelines – I have numerous DJ friends who have records out on Beatport and who have taken part in DJ competitions, but they wouldn't be considered notable. So in order to prove Starkillers' notability for a Wikipedia article, the sources should not include anything from his website or social media, no non-official charts, and no information from personal blogs or gossip websites. In short, the information would need to come from newspapers, music magazines, independent music websites with an editorial team, and chart positions from national charts. Hope this helps. Richard3120 (talk) 16:01, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Richard3120 (talk) thank you so much for this info this really helps Richard! This is one of his hit tracks right here with its own Wiki page that charted in Belgium: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pressure_(Nadia_Ali_song) I can provide much more 3rd party sources than that to prove his notability. Would you think it would be a good idea for me to put this up on "Articles of Creation" as another admin had suggested me? That way other editors can pick it up and contribute to it.

No, I think postdlf is correct, you can't submit an article for creation a second time once it has been deleted, you have to make a case for it to be reverted. The Belgian chart is the Tip chart, which isn't the main chart: it's the equivalent of the Billboard Bubbling Under chart, i.e. new records likely to make the main chart. I've no idea where that UK chart position comes from either, as the UK chart only goes up to 100.
You should add four tildes after your comments in order to add your signature and timestamp. Richard3120 (talk) 16:20, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Richard3120 (talk) Ok I will build an argument on DRV thank you for your help! Kiran chandani (talk) 16:24, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You may want to use your sandbox to build up your argument and to collect sources – if you are logged in under your username you will see "Sandbox" in the menu right at the top of the screen, towards the right hand side. Clicking on that will bring you to your own personal "play area" where you can try out various things, collect information and work on articles, without altering anything on the main Wikipedia site. Richard3120 (talk) 21:02, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Richard3120 (talk) Hi Richard! Thank you for the info on Sandbox. I have already collected sufficient references and broke it down to the Musician notability criterion based on the Wiki guidelines but yes I will definitely start with Sandbox before posting on main wikipedia so I get all the formatting correct. I will be posting this soon! Thank you! :) Kiran chandani (talk) 21:08, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Las Vegas EDM

[edit]

Looking for sources, my 30-minute assessment is that if you don't come up with something solid in a major magazine or newspaper about Terranova, it may not pass the notability bar when it's reviewed. I think a more fruitful direction may be to focus on the Las Vegas EDM scene, which is most likely notable by Wikipedia's standards, and of which Terranova is indisputably a part. Individual items in a larger article don't have to meet notability criteria, so by this standard Terranova and Crystal Method would likely have their own subsections if it turns out, as I read in one source, that they are the two biggest artists to come out of Las Vegas. Example sources: [1], [2]. — Brianhe (talk) 20:55, 11 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I went ahead and started User:Brianhe/Las Vegas EDM. You're welcome of course to edit there. — Brianhe (talk) 23:58, 11 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Brianhe (talk) Hi Brianhe! This sounds great! So just to clarify we should create Las Vegas EDM first, and then a Starkillers page which is a subsection to Las Vegas EDM? Thank you for starting this! I will contribute my research to it as well. Please let me know if I should still create a Kiran Chandani/Starkillers page based on your comment on your talk page. Thank you! :) Kiran chandani (talk) 00:19, 12 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) Yes, the Nick Terranova section is already there. That's where additional material on him and his music or label can be added. Brianhe (talk) 00:26, 12 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Brianhe (talk) ok! I have references for that researched already. I'm slightly confused so should we create a separate page for him still?

Brianhe (talk) I went through the Las Vegas EDM article its very well sourced. I will do some more research to see if there's other references and pieces of information that can be added. I see that for The Crystal Method you added the page for their Wikipedia, is that the direction we are going with Starkillers page as well? Kiran chandani (talk) 00:25, 12 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I think the right thing is to go ahead and develop it as it stands. Then when we think we're nearly complete, we can decide if Starkillers needs a new article. That would expose the new article to its own notability criteria, which might not be wise. You might want to review Notability guidelines do not apply to content within an article guideline to see what I'm talking about. — Brianhe (talk) 00:29, 12 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Brianhe (talk) oh I see! ok yes that sounds good. I will go ahead and add factual based information along with references for each under the Nick Terranova Section. Thank you for this I will review those guidelines shortly. Please give me a day to add to the Nick Terranova section! I will inform you as soon as I have completed adding all the information that I researched. Kiran chandani (talk) 00:33, 12 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Just as a reminder, we shall be going through the articles for creation (AfC) process next, as is appropriate when you have a relationship wih the subject. Which you do, even though it is an unpaid internship. — Brianhe (talk) 01:14, 12 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Brianhe (talk) Yes absolutely! You mentioned this process previously and it definitely makes sense to go through WP:AFC. Kiran chandani (talk) 01:24, 12 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Brianhe (talk) Hi Biranhe I wanted to ask for your help in terms of editing the references on the Las Vegas EDM page. So as I see there's a specific format followed at the end of the page under references. So for the references that I add, how do I ensure the same format is consistent and connect the information pieces properly to the references section. Please let me know so I don't mess up connecting the references properly :) Thank you!Kiran chandani (talk) 06:24, 12 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Just use the Yardkard tool [3] to turn a URL into a ref, add them at the end of the references section, and in the article body refer to it by author or publication name in plain text. We can worry about getting actual <ref> tags later. This revision has an example of what I mean about not worrying about ref tags at first. Sometimes, getting wiki markup just right gets in the way of content creation. In your case, as tthe subject matter expert, your most important contributions are content, not formatting. There are plenty of wikignomes who can worry about the latter. — Brianhe (talk) 13:28, 12 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Brianhe ok sounds good! I'll go ahead and add content. Thank you! :) Kiran chandani (talk) 22:34, 12 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Brianhe Hi Brianhe I have started adding content under Starkillers section for the Las Vegas EDM draft. I still have to add more content and references please keep the headers in bold under his section that I left incomplete so I can add further content to it! Let me know if this looks ok so far :) Kiran chandani (talk) 01:39, 13 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Careful when you're working on this to be mindful of WP:UNDUE. For instance, the radio show. Does it involve Las Vegas performers? Is it taped in Las Vegas? Are there other EDM radio shows, and how has this one uniquely had an influence on EDM? Are other writers talking about the show? Right now you're veering off again towards PROMO, so try to tie what you're writing back to notable, encyclopedic content. It might end up being necessary to cut some of the details of individual album releases, for instance, to get this through AfC. — Brianhe (talk) 02:56, 13 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Brianhe ok! I will do some more research on the Radio Show to find suitable references, if there are not enough references then I will take the KillerRadio section out. Once I have added all the info on my end, I will do a thorough review to ensure everything is well references and there is no use of promotional language. Thank you! :) Kiran chandani (talk) 03:01, 13 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
One more thing for tonight. It's not just avoiding promotional wording like "he's a really awesome artist" or something that blatant. Just having too much content towards one particular individual, or in this case, his body of work, might be seen as violating WP:UNDUE (undue weight). This is really subjective and I've been hit by it before (here for instance), so my rough advice at this time is to try to balance coverage of each thing relative every another thing. In other words, you might try to expand Crystal Method's place in LV EDM history, or find another artist of similar stature to Starkillers and include a bit more on them before building out the section on Starkillers. I tried to give you some other starting points with the stuff on pool parties and the annual EDC event (hint, are there top billers at EDC who have appeared over several years?). A concrete example from my own work under way: In Draft:Varieties of English I went to Encyclopedia Brittanica to see what varieties they had listed, to check myself and see that the list I developed myself wasn't unbalanced. If I'd listed 20 regional varieties of American English and just one item for British English, that would have been unbalanced, and would have reflected my bias as a speaker of American English. See what I mean? — Brianhe (talk) 03:21, 13 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Brianhe yes absolutely that makes sense! I will add to other sections on the page as well and keep in mind the relativity. Thank you for your advice on this, its really helping me learn a lot about Wikipedia as well :) Kiran chandani (talk) 03:27, 13 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
One more thing and it's back to wikibreak for me. http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/fatboy-slim-on-the-american-edm-scene-the-vegas-side-of-it-really-isnt-for-me-20130319 From Rolling Stone looks like a very good source for why LV scene isn't for everyone (negative comments also contribute to notability). And there's a new movie about LV EDM, search for "edm-sploitation" for some interesting comments. If you're not familiar with American 1970s cinema, it refers ironically to the blacksploitation genre. -- Brianhe (talk) 05:51, 13 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Brianhe Welcome back! I will read the article from rolling stones shortly! I wanted to ask you, if you got a chance to look at these articles about the Starkillers and Avicii controversy that took place over social media fairly recently: [1][2][3][4][5]. I wanted your suggestion on whether this would be appropriate to include in the page. Not sure if it is relevant. Let me know your thoughts on this! Also, I have started adding content under EDC as well. There is a lot of credible sources out there for EDC so it may take me a day or two to finish this section as I want to ensure I do proper research on this. I will then start with The Crystal Method section after. I have yet to finish Starkillers section so you may see some incomplete areas, should I write a small notice that I have yet to complete those areas? I am going back and forth between different sections to switch up the research :)Kiran chandani (talk) 06:14, 13 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Brianhe for his track Pressure alongside Nadia Ali and Alex Kenji that has its own wikipedia page, it has the awards and charts section with the table formatting, is that ok if I pick the formatting from there? Please let me know! Kiran chandani (talk) 03:15, 13 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ive asked for feedback from multiple sources, including WT:WikiProject Music. I hope we'll hear from someone soon. Looking at the current article, I think the discography is unbalanced and they probably will ask for it to be removed or moved to a separate discography list article. — Brianhe (talk) 22:19, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Brianhe! So sorry I haven't been on Wikipedia since the weekend. I will add more content to EDC and The chemical method after class tonight! Please let them Know if you can that I'll still be adding more content to it! Thank you :)

Hey, it looks like you've gone away for a bit. Are you still interested in working on this? By the way you don't have to preface your reply with my username; I'm watching this page. — Brianhe (talk) 05:24, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Brianhe! Yes still working on this, I was away on vacation this past week so I am back now and I will be able to finish it by this week!
Great. In case you missed it, Draft talk:Las Vegas EDM has some feedback for us from a third party. — Brianhe (talk) 17:03, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Justwondering if your internship is still ongoing, and if you still plan to work on Draft:Las Vegas EDM. If not, that's fine. Brianhe (talk) 18:18, 4 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Brianhe! How's it going? Yes I am still continuing my internship. However, this semester I am also enrolled in full time university classes so I've had less time to work on the wikipedia page than I thought I would. Please give me some more time to finish it. I added more to the EDC and pool parties section last week. I will be finishing up the artists section this week! Thanks! Kiran chandani (talk) 20:02, 4 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Want to submit this to AfC yet? Brianhe (talk) 16:21, 24 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Brianhe! Sorry I was away for a bit. I want to revise it once before submitting! Can we submit early next week if possible? Please let me know. Thanks! Kiran chandani (talk) 01:13, 29 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Checking in again. Maybe even if you're busy, it's best to submit it and let other people continue to work on the article? – Brianhe (talk) 10:42, 17 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Brianhe! Seems like I wasn't receiving notifications for this in my email. Finals are in a few weeks so I've been swamped. I will finish it as much as I can in the next few hours and then we can submit it so others can continue to contribute as needed! Let me know if you think this is ok :) Thank you! Kiran chandani (talk) 04:38, 24 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. Good luck to both of us on the AfC. - Brianhe (talk) 09:43, 24 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Brianhe! Hope you're doing well. I see the article got rejected, I will continue to improve it and add more sources before resubmission. However, would it be ok to create a separate article for Starkillers at this time with contribution from other writers too hopefully? Let me know what you think! I can work on both articles.Kiran chandani (talk) 03:27, 9 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Conflict of interest in Wikipedia

[edit]

Hi Kiran. You have disclosed on your User page that you are a volunteer working for Brawla Records and Starkillers. Please be aware that you still have a conflict of interest in Wikipedia; if you read WP:COI you can see that what matters is that you have a relationship external to Wikipedia, and you are here wanting to edit about the entity with which you have a relationship.

The way we manage COI has two steps. Disclosure is the first step, which you have started to do, which is great. It would be ideal if you would add: "Because of my relationship with Brawla, I have a conflict of interest in Wikipedia with regard to them and Starkillers, a band on the label." Once the draft article is created in your sandbox, you should also disclose your COI on the Talk page. Brianhe or I can help you with that, once the draft is started - just ping me.

The second step is a form of peer review. This piece may seem a bit strange to you at first, but if you think about it, it will make sense. In Wikipedia, editors can immediately publish their work, with no intervening publisher or standard peer review -- you ~can~ just create an article, click save, and viola there is a new article, and you can go into any article, make changes, click save, and done. No intermediary. What we ask editors who have a COI to do, is a) if you create an article, submit it through the WP:AFC process so it can be reviewed before it publishes. This is what you have been advised to do b) And if you want to change content in an existing article on a topic where you have a COI (for instance, on the Starkillers article, once it is created) we ask you to propose content on the Talk page for others to review and implement before it goes live, instead of doing it directly yourself. You can make the edit request easily - and provide notice to the community of your request - by using the "edit request" function as described in the conflict of interest guideline.

Will you please complete the COI disclosure on your user page, and agree to follow the peer review processes? Thanks! Jytdog (talk) 01:00, 12 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Jytdog (talk) Hello Jytdog! Thank you the info. I have compeleted the COI disclosure on my user page, please let me know if there is any other information I should add. And yes absolutely Brianhe mentioned the process perviously and I have no problem going though WP:AFC and the peer review processes. I believe this would be good for the page as well to ensure all sources are good enough to back up any information provided. Thank you! Kiran chandani (talk) 01:28, 12 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Beautiful. Thanks for dealing with this graciously. Good luck! Jytdog (talk) 01:49, 12 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Jytdog (talk Thank you! :)
