May 2008 - New York And Ottawa Railway

[edit]

Hi, the recent edit you made to New York and Ottawa Railway has been reverted, as it appears to be unconstructive. Use the sandbox for testing; if you believe the edit was constructive, ensure that you provide an informative edit summary. You may also wish to read the introduction to editing. Thanks. treelo talk 20:28, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Treelo. The edit you reverted on the NY&O I put back. The reason I did this is because the map is incorrect or rather incomplete. It only shows 74 miles of the entire 130 mile route, ending at the Canadian-American border. The railway continued into Canada another 56 miles. If a map is going to be included, it should show the entire route, not just a portion. Just doesn't make sense. I may scan one of the timetables I own, showing the full route, and upload that. For now I just wanted to clarify. I had family work on that line, I've studied it for years and have written articles and a manuscript of its history. All I do on that page is either correct what has been falsely posted or add any new information I or my partners have come across that is important.

Thanks for uploading the timetable map (it *is* better than my map), but you should upload it as a different image, and specify different copyright information. RussNelson (talk) 00:50, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Russ, I've uploaded my map in a proper manner and left yours intact, but it is no longer associated with the article.

Bonfire, the map is great, but it doesn't specify a source or a copyright status. Since it appears to have been published after 1923, I fear it probably is under copyright, and eventually, someone will delete it (I could, of course, be wrong). But we could probably get someone to use it as the basis for a free map by requesting it at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Maps. -- Mwanner | Talk 18:29, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If there is a problem, let me know. I likely have others. Funny thing is that if I find an earlier one from another of my timetables, it will be the same one, only a different issued date. But isn't it 75 years back (which would make it 1933 and this 1930 map would appear to be ok).
In Canada it might be 75 years back, but in the US it is 1923 as a fixed date; since Wikipedia's servers are in the US, it's my understanding that it is US copyright law that governs. So if you have a pre-1923 map that shows the complete route, that should do it. Cheers! -- Mwanner | Talk 11:20, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I found an earlier one, pre-1923, but the funny thing is it is the exact same map. Do you recomment that I scan this new one and upload it or just change the descrption of the original? (This comment was left by me but for some reason Wikipedia says it was unsigned)
If it's identical, I don't see why you can't just change the description. As for the "unsigned" issue, you should add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your posts, and the system will replace them with your "signature" and date (just one of dozens of little things we all have had to learn when we got started here). Hang in there! Mwanner | Talk 23:10, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The map has been replaced with a different file, indicating both the date and proper copyright statement. Bonfire34 (talk) 13:46, 14 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And I added a public domain tag. That should make everybody happy (I hope). Cheers! --Mwanner | Talk 11:06, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for Image:Map0001.JPG

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Map0001.JPG. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 19:20, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I did explain it in the description. I have now editted it to explain it further. I hope that will be enough.
I replaced the image with a different one and specified the proper copyright.

Unspecified source/license for Image:Knock Out.JPG

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Knock Out.JPG. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Even if you created the image yourself, you still need to release it so Wikipedia can use it. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you made this image yourself, you can use copyright tags like {{PD-self}} (to release all rights), {{self|CC-by-sa-3.0|GFDL}} (to require that you be credited), or any tag here - just go to the image, click edit, and add one of those. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by MifterBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. --MifterBot (TalkContribsOwner) 19:31, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Feels Like Comin' Home.JPG}

[edit]

Thank you for uploading Image:Feels Like Comin' Home.JPG. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check:

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. Additionally, if you continue uploading bad images, you may be blocked from uploading. STBotI (talk) 13:28, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've explained where the image is from and who did the image in the image's description.

Your uploads

[edit]

Good day. I see that you have uploaded a number of images to Wikipedia. First off, thank you for your contributions. Unfortunately, there are some guidelines that we need to follow with copyrighted images. Specifically, you need to add a source for the image (a link to a website will do), a copyright tag (there are some listed at WP:ICT), and a rationale explaining why we can use a copyrighted image (explained at WP:NFURG). I see that your images fail to include one of these. Please stop uploading images and address the concerns listed above. If you need assistance, you can ask at the help desk. If you do not fix these images, and you continue to make bad uploads, you will be blocked and your images will be deleted. Thanks for your contributions! I have been specifying where I have gotten my images in the description of each file.

Two things. First thing is that just because it's "freely available on the band's website for fans" doesn't mean it's under a free license, which is what really counts here. But the most important thing, and the reason why it was deleted, is that under fair use guidelines, you cannot use a copyrighted image to illustrate the band, which was your main purpose here (with very few exceptions, and as far as I know this is not one of them). Also, even if you do use a non-free image, the image needs a detailed fair use rationale in order for it to remain on Wikipedia. I know it's a lot of hoops to jump through, but it's a necessary step to make the use of copyrighted images as little as possible. —kurykh 04:09, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:Bonfire2009.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Bonfire2009.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Replaceable fair use Image:Bonfire2009.jpg

[edit]
Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Bonfire2009.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. (ESkog)(Talk) 16:38, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image (File:Fur Dich single.JPG)

[edit]
⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Fur Dich single.JPG. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. FileBot (talk) 21:06, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Born Into Darkness requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A9 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a musical recording which does not indicate why its subject is important or significant, and where the artist's article has never existed, has been deleted or is eligible for deletion itself. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for music.

A tag has been placed on Michael Bormann requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. The article Children of the Future (The Sygnet album) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Although made up of members from other bands, this group doesn't have an article and the album itself seems less than notable with little to offer in reliable coverage

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Replaceable fair use File:Bonfire-2012.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Bonfire-2012.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that this media item is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails the first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media item could be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media item is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the file discussion page, write the reason why this media item is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Fut.Perf. 16:26, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, Bonfire34. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places, or things you have written about in the article Pearls (Bonfire album), you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic, and it is important when editing Wikipedia articles that such connections be completely transparent. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, we ask that you please:

  • avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your family, friends, school, company, club, or organization, as well as any competing companies' projects or products;
  • instead, you are encouraged to propose changes on the Talk pages of affected article(s) (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or to the website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Please take a few moments to read and review Wikipedia's policies regarding conflicts of interest, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies. Thank you.

-I am NOT in the employ of the band known as Bonfire or in any way financially connected or work with them in any form. I am only a VERY long-time fan of the group, NOT a member, NOT a former member and NO connection with them at all. I have been a fan of the band for decades though and I am very aware of the situations of the band days after something has happened. My nickname only reflects my admiration of the group and I registered it over 10 years ago, and I use it as an ID for other things (my Yahoo e-mail address for example). I have done other non-Bonfire articles here as well. If you have checked my entire contribution you would have seen that I have other interests other than with one musical band. AngryHarpytalk 11:44, 2 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding your edit summary here: No, I'm afraid it really was never sourced. If you look through the page history, you'll come to the same conclusion. It's also a little, well, eerie, that you'd come back after five years to decline a PROD a mere few hours after it was posted, but I guess that can be explained by the talk page notification.
But to get back to topic, having looked into this a little closer yet, I honestly doubt that any of the articles in Category:Bonfire (band) video albums would hold up at Articles for deletion, since I don't find it likely they'd pass NALBUM or the general notability guideline individually. With this in mind, would you possibly be open to the creation of a List of Bonfire video albums, which the five currently existing entries could be redirected and merged into? I would absolutely be happy to help you with that. AngryHarpytalk 15:52, 2 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I have now created Draft:List of Bonfire video albums; in my opinion, this is a fair solution as it wholly retains the original (and presently, still completely unsourced – we'll have to do something about that) content. The cover images have to stay commented out while in draft space, but I'll make them visible if and once this is moved to main space. The original, individual entries would be redirected directly to their corresponding sections (like this: The Best (video)), so the information would stay just as visible as it is right now.
I'm going to give you a week to respond to this proposal – if you happen to come back to this later, you are of course free to restore the original state of the articles; in this case, I'd formally propose the merge (see WP:MERGE) and invite some community input.
Please let me know what you think, and if you do have any sources to add to the draft, you're more than welcome to do so – thanks! AngryHarpytalk 06:52, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Since it's a slow day at work today, I've taken the initiative myself and added everything useful I could find – it won't win any rewards, but it's presentable. Still, as a fan, if you have access to any offline sources, your contributions would be very welcome. Sorry for inundating you with these messages, take all the time you need. AngryHarpytalk 07:51, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, your draft looks good to me, so please proceed with your idea and thank you for doing this. I have been "around" (never logged in) but have not edited or made updates to anything that I have done previously (all the pages, not just for Bonfire-band) because it seems no matter how much that I would input, information and/or references, that there was always someone proposing to either delete or remove what I had inputted due to "X" reasons. The day someone accused me of being a member of the Bonfire band and demanded my credentials that's when I said enough was enough and I gave up. Besides my home life has become worse health wise for my wife and arguing to have proper information on the very little entries that I put in seems so unimportant now. I only keep an eye on one entry as that has relation to my research and book that I am working to publish in the near future. Again, thank you for this compromise, I appreciate it and your efforts. Bonfire34 (talk) 12:45, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, thank you so much for responding! I'll give myself some more time to see if I can dig up some more citable material – the first two entries in particular are difficult to look up – but with your consent, I'll move the draft into main space as soon as I feel it's ready. Best wishes to you and your wife, I hope it all works out! AngryHarpytalk 12:54, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 03:46, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
