You may wish to examine the Manual of Style, particularly the section on national varieties of English. Generally if a topic is tied to a particular English speaking nation, that nation's version of English will be used (so the American Civil War uses American English, the Great Fire of London uses British English, and so on). If it is not tied to a particular English speaking nation, then usually whatever form was used first is used throughout that article.
