Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited 39th Division (United Kingdom), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Battle of the Lys (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Thank you and a late reply

I just saw your comment on the talk of the schools and university projects page. I was there to "clean house" because that page doesn't get used much. I linked your page at WP:Student assignments and by the way, most education discussion happens at the WP:Education noticeboard. That's where I was discussing with User:Mike Cline about using Wikipedia to discuss ways to share the type of knowledge you documented at Wikipedia:Participation by academic projects. Your page is more of a Wikimedia document than a Wikipedia document... hmmmmm.... I wonder what a more descriptive title might be? Maybe "Engaging with Wikimedia platforms as a cultural or educational institution"? I don't know! Anyhow, nice to run across your name on the wiki. Hopefully our paths will cross again sometime. Best regards. Biosthmors (talk) pls notify me (i.e. {{U}}) while signing a reply, thx 08:47, 22 September 2013 (UTC)

Changes to SuggestBot's suggestions

We have changed the number of suggested articles and which categories they are selected from. The number of stubs has been greatly reduced, the number of articles needing sources doubled, and two new categories added (orphans and unencyclopaedic articles). We have also modified the layout of the suggestions and added sortable columns with various types of information about each article. The first two columns are:

Views/Day
Daily average number of views an article's had over the past 14 days.
Quality
Predicted article quality on a 1- to 3-star scale. Placing your cursor over the stars should give you a pop-up describing the article's quality (Low/Medium/High), current assessment class, and predicted assessment class.

The method we use to predict article quality also allows us to assess whether an article might need specific types of work in order to improve its quality. The work needed might not correspond to cleanup tags added to the article, since our method is not based on those. We have added five columns reflecting this work assessment, where a red X indicates improvement is needed. Placing your cursor over an X should give you a pop-up with a short description of the work needed. The five columns seek to answer the following five questions:

Content
Is more content needed?
Headings
Does this article have an appropriate section structure?
Images
Is the number of illustrative images about right?
Links
Does this article link to enough other Wikipedia articles?
Sources
For its length, is there an appropriate number of citations to sources in this article?

SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. We appreciate that you have signed up to receive suggestions regularly, your contributions make Wikipedia better — thanks for helping!

If you have feedback on how to make SuggestBot better, please let us know on SuggestBot's talk page. Regards from Nettrom (talk), SuggestBot's caretaker. -- SuggestBot (talk) 23:36, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

Last-minute Geonotice, sorry!

Hey there! I've just posted a really last-minute Geonotice Request -- sorry about that! If you see it before tomorrow night, I'd really appreciate you running it, even for a single night. If you don't, that's totally fine: it's completely my fault for not getting this thing organized earlier. Thanks! -- Gaurav (talk) 05:06, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

Done! Thanks for the pointer - I probably wouldn't have noticed it before the weekend otherwise. Andrew Gray (talk) 11:44, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

Rewards and Fairies

There seem to be at least three illustrators for this one from roughly 1910; do you know, by any chance, which is original?

Also, I found a book we lack an article on: Soldier Tales. Adam Cuerden (talk) 21:13, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

I think Soldier Tales is a republication rather than one of Kipling's specific volumes, but I'd have to check to be sure. Does it contain a lot of Soldiers Three by any chance?
I think the answer may be "it's complicated". Several were published in magazines (The Delineator, Nash's Magazine) a few months before publication, and it's possible they had alternate illustrators here. The book versions seem to be Frank Craig. Andrew Gray (talk) 21:38, 28 September 2013 (UTC)
It contains the characters, but not any of the stories from that collection, unless I missed one. It contins "With the Main Guard", "The Drums of the Fore and Aft", "The Man who Was", "The Courting of Dinah Shadd", "The Incarnation of Krishna Mulvaney", "The Taking of Lungtungpen", and "The Madness of Private Ortheris". A couple of those are in Plain Tales from the Hills, but not all. Adam Cuerden (talk) 22:59, 28 September 2013 (UTC)
Interesting. The volume was produced by Macmillan in 1896 (so definitely legitimate), and the stories are from 1888 (Soldiers Three), 1888 (Wee Willie Winkie), 1890 (Life's Handicap), 1890 (Dinah Shadd then Life's Handicap), 1889 (Dinah Shadd then Life's Handicap), 1887 (Plain Tales from the Hills), and 1888 (Plain Tales from the Hills) - so all collected elsewhere first. I wonder if this was a repackaging to keep the market interested in a relatively fallow year? He hadn't produced "real" short stories since 1893, if you discount the Jungle Book - which I think quite a few readers did at the time - and Captains Courageous wasn't due out until the next year. It's not just modern publishers who'll try new editions of old content to catch people's interest ;-) Andrew Gray (talk) 21:01, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

Also, I have the Frank Craig illustrations. They're... alright, but not great, but I found evidence of publications in the same year using more Puck-like illustrations. Adam Cuerden (talk) 00:21, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

Unfortunately my Kipling books are elsewhere, so can't chase details, but here's where to look for copies of any other illustrations (taken from the Reader's Guide):
  • A Centurion of the Thirtieth - Strand Magazine (May 1906), McClure's Magazine (May 1906)
  • On the Great Wall - Strand Magazine (June 1906), McClure's Magazine (June 1906)
  • The Winged Hats - Strand Magazine (Jul 1906), McClure's Magazine (Jul 1906)
  • Hal o' the Draft - Strand Magazine (Aug 1906), McClure's Magazine (Aug 1906)
  • Dymchurch Flit - Strand Magazine (Sep 1906), McClure's Magazine (Sep 1906)
  • The Treasure and the Law - Strand Magazine (Oct 1906), McClure's Magazine (Oct 1906)
...a very well-organised syndication campaign! So three possible magazines which might have employed their own illustrators. The Strand is on archive.org; here is the first one, in the Jan-Jun volume. I can't quite make out the signature, but it's not Craig. Neither the LHJ or McClure's seem to have relevant volumes on archive.org. Andrew Gray (talk) 21:01, 30 September 2013 (UTC)
Hm. http://archive.org/stream/rewardsfairies00kipl2#page/n39/mode/2up has different illustrations, by C. E. Brock, although that's from 1960. Frankly, I'd rather do the Brock illustrations than the Craig, but I'll go with Craig if I can't find proof he was early enough. Adam Cuerden (talk) 22:54, 30 September 2013 (UTC)
I've just realised something: I am an idiot. (No news there). You're doing Rewards and Fairies, not Puck of Pook's Hill, and the stories listed above are from Puck not from the later collection. Here's R&F:
  • Cold Iron - The Delineator, Sept 1909
  • Gloriana - The Delineator, Dec 1909; Nash's Magazine, Mar 1910
  • The Wrong Thing - The Delineator, Nov 1909; Nash's Magazine, May 1910
  • Marklake Witches - not previously published
  • The Knife and the Naked Chalk - Harper's Magazine, Dec 1909
  • Brother Square-Toes - The Delineator, Jul 1910
  • A Priest in Spite of Himself - The Delineator, Aug 1910
  • The Conversion of St Wilfrid - The Delineator, Jan 1910
  • A Doctor of Medicine - The Delineator, Oct 1909; Nash's Magazine, Aug 1910
  • Simple Simon - The Delineator, Jun 1910; Nash's Magazine, Jul 1910
  • The Tree of Justice - The Delineator, Feb 1910
Here is The Knife and the Naked Chalk, the only Harper's story; illustrations are by "ESC" (?). Nash's is not on IA, nor is the Delineator. Andrew Gray (talk) 19:44, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 September newsletter

In 30 days, we will know the identity of our 2013 WikiCup champion. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) currently leads; if that lead is held, she will become the first person to have won the WikiCup twice. Canada Sasata (submissions), Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions)—who has never participated in the competition before—and New South Wales Casliber (submissions) follow. The majority of points in this round have come from a mix of good articles and bonus points. This final round is seeing contributions to a number of highly important topics; recent submissions include Phoenix (constellation) (FA by Casliber), Ernest Lawrence (GA by Hawkeye7), Pinniped, and red fox (both GAs by Sasata).

The did you know (DYK) eligibility criteria have recently changed, meaning that newly passed good articles are accepted as "new" for did you know purposes. However, in the interests of not changing the WikiCup rules mid-competition, please note that only articles eligible for DYK under the old system (that is, newly created articles or 5x expansions) will be eligible for points in this year's WikiCup. We do, however, have time to discuss how this new system will work for next year's competition; a discussion will be opened in due course. On that note, thoughts are welcome on changes you'd like to see for next year. What worked? What didn't work? What would you like to see more of? What would you like to see less of? All Wikipedians, new or old, are also warmly invited to sign up for the 2014 WikiCup.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
