Considering that I've been a member for four years, your welcome comes a bit late. In any event, I believe my edit was entirely constructive, since my edit allowed for the information being presented to be something aggreable to all factions on the debate. To revert it back to its previous status allows the disagreements to return, thus disenfranchising the holders of certain positions in favour of others.

Volunteer opportunity in Bethesda, Thursday, July 16

The Wikimedia Foundation will be conducting an all-day Academy at the National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, Maryland, on Thursday, July 16. The team that will be teaching at the Academy, a mix of paid staff and volunteers, is looking for four more volunteers to be teaching assistants, providing one-to-one assistance in workshops whenever a workshop participant has a problem following the instructional directions. (We currently have two editors signed up as teaching assistants, and are looking for a total of six.)

The NIH editing workshops are only for two hours, but volunteers are asked to meet the Wikimedia Foundation team at the hotel in Bethesda at about 7:15 a.m. (time to be finalized shortly) and to stay for the entire day, which ends at 4:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided. (The full schedule can be found here.)

The team is not necessarily looking for expert editors (though they are welcome), just people who can help novices who might get stuck when trying to do some basic things. If you've been an editor for at least 3 months, and have done at least 500 edits, you probably qualify.

If you're interested, please send John Broughton an email. If you might be interested, but would like further information, please post a note on his user talk page, so that he can respond there, and others can see what was asked.

Move from where?

Where was List of English words that may be spelled with an ash or an ethel moved from? You can't move a page by a cut-and-paste into a new article. Fences&Windows 01:56, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

I see you're getting around a redirect, the article was cut and pasted from http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_words_that_may_be_spelled_with_a_ligature&oldid=330714151, right? See WP:Cut and paste for why you shouldn't do this, you've used material without attributing the source. Fences&Windows 02:01, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

Please don't insert personal commentary into that article based on modern standards of libertarianism, something which many of the members of the 19th-century party would not have been enthusiastic about, or might not have even understood very well. The core constituency of the party tended to be motivated more by purging the United States of sinfulness than by the idea of allowing every individual perfect freedom to go to hell if he so chose. If they had wanted to found the John Stuart Mill party, then they would have founded the John Stuart Mill party, but they didn't... AnonMoos (talk) 16:34, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

I have perused your 29 August 2010 edit of my previous edit, and cannot ascertain precisely what your issue was with my edit. At no point does my edit mention the classical liberal John Stuart Mill, nor does your edit indicate that the "core constituency" of the party wanted to "purg[e] the United States of sinfulness." The closest change you made to that effect was removing the word illiberal and replacing it with moralistic, a change I have no problem with, since the party, beginning in 1848, had become both more illiberal and moralistic.
By no means, therefore, was I inserting "personal commentary" or "modern standards of libertarianism" (emphasis added), the latter of which being more Rothbardian than Millian, anyway, despite my lack of reference to either. The party was never fully libertarian by modern standards, and insofar as it ever was libertarian, its libertarianism was much more inclined to a nineteenth-century standard. In other words, it was libertarian insofar as libertarianism overlaps with classical liberalism. Therefore, while I have no problem claiming on my personal website that it was was one of the first officially-organised libertarian parties in the united states, I would object to anyone claiming that it embodied "modern standards of libertarianism," as you call them.
I would say that any honest appraisal of the Liberty Party would have to note that the party, like all parties, had factions. As it turns out, the Chase faction was more Jeffersonian and libertarian-leaning than the Smith faction, which was more moralistic and tended to embody a weird mixture of liberalism and conservatism. The latter faction historically wanted the world to believe that it was the more radical faction, and that the former was not as concerned as the latter with the plight of the slave; but my own research, which I have done elsewhere, indicates that that view is highly biased and false. Since it was the latter faction that assumed control of the party after the bulk left it to form, along with Barnburners and others, the Free Soil Party, the party can honestly be said to have lost much of its libertarian spirit after 1848.

WikiProject C-SPAN?

Greetings fellow Wikipedia editor -

I am leaving you this note because I have reason to believe that you are interested in C-SPAN. (I may have made this assumption based on your C-SPAN user box, or perhaps for some other reason.) If this is not an interest of yours, please feel free to read no further and delete this message.

If you are in fact someone who is interested in C-SPAN, then let me put forward an idea that I have been kicking around for a while. What if we started a C-SPAN WikiProject?

The parameters of this (potential) project are up for discussion, but it could include some or all of the following (as well as things that may occur to you that have not occurred to me):

  • Creation, maintenance, and improvement of articles and lists directly related to C-SPAN and its programming.
  • Use of C-SPAN programming in citations for various topics
  • Inclusion of unique and targeted C-SPAN video links for various articles. (Doing this with respect for established guidelines at Wikipedia:External links.) (Example: If you are interested in the submarine USS Wyoming (SSBN-742), then having easy access to the eight hours of programming taped while a C-SPAN crew were guests on that submarine could also be of interest to you.)
  • Inclusion of (and possible further creation of) templated links such as {{C-SPAN|laurabush}}, that will easily take article readers to a link of all C-SPAN Video Library links for the person about whom the article is about.
  • What else?

I don't know exactly how far we may want to go, nor in what directions, but I do believe (as I have long noted on my user page) that C-SPAN and Wikipedia are both...

...fantastic vehicles for the free exchange of ideas and information in a non-sound-bite manner, and they both invite the participation of any parties (expert or amateur) who are interested in taking the time to absorb and/or contribute to the ideas and information offered. C-SPAN and Wikipedia go together like peanut butter and jelly, and I want to help give other Wiki users easy access to the great work that C-SPAN has done on a variety of topics.

Now, I should mention that I have never started a WikiProject before, and I do not know the best way to go about it. (Perhaps one of you do?) Let me offer one of my sandbox pages, User:KConWiki/sandbox/Wikiproject C-SPAN?, as a gathering area for comments until such time as we gather enough steam to start our own WikiProject page.

Thanks for reading this far, and I hope that you will give some consideration as to whether this is something we ought to attempt. Please feel free to pass this message on to others you know whom might be interested, and please let me know your thoughts and comments.

I agree the article needs work. (In fact, I said so here|.) But, instead of speedily deleting it, I recommend that you alter the text so as to make it no longer a copyright-infringement issue. After all, I did put a good hour into putting that page together. I look forward to seeing what the article looks like when you've finished altering the text in order to ensure that the article does not infringe upon any copyright laws. Everything in the article was copyright-infringement. The show's description, UrbanTarzan's description and episode descriptions. The deleting admin thought the same way. It would take me longer than an hour to fix it. I do fix articles if a paragraph or two have problems, but not the entire article. It is up to you to write copyright free material, not anybody else. Not everything in the article constituted a copyright infringement. Only three of the four main paragraphs were lifted from the show's website, and all three included citations. The first paragraph was entirely original, and even it included a citation, since it referenced a start date and time I found in an article. If creating blockquotes for the lifted material is not enough of a temporary fix (until such a time as future editors further improve the article), a different temporary fix would have been to delete the offending paragraphs and blurbs entirely, leaving intact the episode numbers, the episode titles, the episode air dates, the article's introductory paragraph, the production company info, the executive producers list, the starring list, the created-by credit, the show's title, the genre, the original channel, the original run, the country of origin, the state in which the show takes place, the language, the number of seasons and of episodes, the external links list, and the categories list—none of which would have violated copyright laws. Granted, the article would be a stub, but future editors could have improved that. It would have only taken me about ninety seconds to remove all copyright infringement, leaving to future editors a stable skeleton upon which they could flesh out a good article. I guess I'm just a little surprised that this "deleting admin" wanted to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Alas, nothing I can do about it, now. I'm on to other things. For whatever reason, picketing relocates to the disambiguation page picket, even though every item on said disambiguation page links to some article called "picket" except for "picketing (protest)." Thank you, DPL bot, for the helpful suggestion. As you noted, such links are "almost always unintended" (emphasis added); in this case, however, it was intended. You see, Three Rivers is a fictional suburb in the show My So-Called Life, and as of right now, there is no article for Three Rivers (My So-Called Life). Moreover, even if such an article were to be created, I don't anticipate it being much more than a stub. In fact, if you go to the Three Rivers page, which you correctly note is a disambiguation page, and scroll down to the "Other uses" section, you will see "Three Rivers, a fictional suburb in the 1994 show My So-Called Life." One can also learn, from reading the disambiguation page, that, in Pennsylvania, "Three Rivers" refers to the "confluence of the Allegheny River and Monongahela River to form the Ohio River." Since the show takes place in the fictional suburb of Three Rivers, Pennsylvania, it is likely that the reason the show's creators chose the name "Three Rivers" is in order to reference that area of Pennsylvania. That's why the link is useful to readers of the My So-Called Life article. At the same time, however, that info cannot be inserted into the My So-Called Life article because that would constitute original research, which, as I'm sure you know, is not allowed on Wikipedia. Wikimedia DC invites you to join us for our next WikiSalon, which will be held from 7 to 9 PM on Thursday, September 5 at our K Street office.

The WikiSalon is an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss the Wikimedia projects and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own. Light refreshments will be provided.
