Lost in the Wikipedia World

Good Samaritan
Hi Airborne,

I am a 69 year old veterinarian and a PhD microbiologist. I wanted to improve some of your pet health articles. I know quite a bit about my profession, but I have been utterly stumped in navigating the Wikieditor world. I am strictly a Dreamweaver HTML code guy and I can not seem to find the right links or key strokes for basic Wikipedia editing. I am also not acquainted with the Jive Talk used in your forums.

For a start, please tell me the proper way to contact you. If you would , tell me in step-by-step fastion and in words your Grandma would be likely to comprehend.

Once I find a way to contact you, all I need for the moment are instructions on the way to insert footnotes and references into a few pet health articles. The references are to articles I have published. I just haven't been able to master the procedure of adding a new reference to reference section of an article or linking to it as a numbered superscript or footnote after the sentence I add to a text. I have read jillions of help topics offered by Wiki and looked for videos on the subject on YouTube. Just cant seem to find an article that gives me directions in using English words that I am familiar with.

My name is Ron Hines. I live in Brownsville , Texas. My email address is yourpetsfriend@gmail.com my phone is (956)621-1432. I am retired so I am generally home. Best wishes CaralampioDos 14:56, 29 September 2012 (UTC)

Hello Dr. Hines. First, thanks for your interest in improving Wikipedia. Expertise like yours is very welcome here.
Second, this is the place to contact me. It is always possible to use the "email" link that should appear on the left side of your screen, but that will almost certainly be slower than contacting me here right now. Just post your questions here and I'll answer them.
Third, I recommend creating a Wikipedia account. It's not required, but recommended.
OK, adding footnotes/endnotes to articles. A key premise here is that the article already exists and has a notes section. If that is the case, the rest is not difficult. There are a few ways to add citations to articles.
The first way is very easy: (1) Select "edit" at the section of an article you want to contribute to, (2) type your passage(s) in the edit box, (3) after the terminal punctuation following the sentence, type the following characters: <ref> </ref>; (4) now, between the <ref> and the </ref>, type the citation in a manner consistent with the article's exiting notes section. You can simply type author, title, date, publisher, etc. When you're done, select "Save page" (I usually hit "show preview" first to look at it) and your citation should appear in the notes section with a superscript indicator after the text in the article itself.
But, if you'd like, you can use citation templates. Take a look at the toolbox on my User Page under "Citing sources." You can choose one of these, copy it, and paste it after the passages you add in an article—such as the characters within the following parentheses to cite a journal article: (<ref>{{Cite journal |first= |last= |authorlink= |coauthors= |year= |month= |title= |journal= |volume= |issue= |pages= |id= |url= |accessdate= |quote= }}</ref>). Then, simply fill in the information after the equals signs in the template, hit "Save page", and the template will do the formatting for you.
Either method will work just fine.
Give it a try. If you have any trouble, please let me know. And thanks again for your interest. --Airborne84 (talk) 17:12, 29 September 2012 (UTC)

Looking for some assistance

Hello, Airborne84, I am an experienced editor but new to Wikipedia. My company, IDEAlliance, helps develop printing and publishing standards and wants to develop a presence on Wikipedia. I've been studying Wikipedia formats and styles but could use some guidance from an experience user. Are you available to help? Chuckl8899 (talk) 20:38, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

In a few days, yes. If you can't wait that long, you'll be better off checking with another editor. If that's not a problem, feel free to list your questions below. Best, --Airborne84 (talk) 07:17, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

Caserma Ederle page

Hi- This is Joyce Costello from the USAG Vicenza Public Affairs Office. I was wondering if I could talk to you about the Caserma Ederle page you had posted information on. I can be reached at editor@eur.army.mil Thank you, Joyce Costello — Preceding unsigned comment added by Costellojk (talkcontribs) 10:48, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Hello Ms. Costello. This is the best place to communicate with me for Wikipedia-related topics. Please feel free to post your question here and I'll respond. Thanks. --Airborne84 (talk) 11:35, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
My interest in the article was only in passing—some minor copy editing. If you have a concern about specific material added, I'd recommend browsing through the article's history to see which editor added it and contacting him/her at their talk page. If you need help with searching the article's history, please let me know below. I'll be happy to help. --Airborne84 (talk) 15:34, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Adopt-a-user

Hi, Airborne84. I found your name in a list of users currently accepting adoptees. I'm a new editor and have run in a little trouble, and was hoping you'd consider adopting me for a short while. --WavesSaid (talk) 05:47, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi Wavesaid. I won't be a good choice for the next ten days or so since I'll have intermittent connectivity. I actually need to pull my info from the adopter page in the meantime. Please accept my apologies and check with one of the other willing editors at the Adopt-a-User page. Best, --Airborne84 (talk) 06:05, 22 November 2012 (UTC)
I understand. Thanks for the speedy reply. --WavesSaid (talk) 08:43, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi, Airborne84, I'm currently copy-editing the above article, as requested at the GOCE Request page by Casprings (talk). I'd like to make you aware of the ongoing copy-edit, during which I'm removing a lot of the existing text which I consider extraneous (I call it 'waffle'). Please feel free to contact me if you'd like to discuss anything about the c/e. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 08:08, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Done; please feel free to contact me if needed, good luck with the GA review. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 00:07, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Got your note. I will question it on WP:RSN. I can get a copy of this dissertation by proquest. However, it carries a copy right so I can't do anything with it on wiki. However, if you have access to the dissertation you could upload it to http://en.wikisource.org. Casprings (talk) 21:08, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

If you are interested in the WP:RSN discussion, it can be found here.

For Good Work on Sentence spacing
Presented by SilkTork

Just read the lead of the Sentence spacing article - very clear and informative. Nice one. SilkTork ✔Tea time 18:05, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Thanks! I got it off to a decent start anyway, I think. I'm sure there will be more to be said on this in the future. Airborne84 (talk) 19:19, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Jesus

You appear to be edit warring on the article on Jesus. The established version has no consensus. You have added a passage you like twice without establishing a consensus. If you continue to edit war, you may be blocked. If you violate the 3RR rule, you may be blocked.
On a side note, this type of editing is not the best way to get results on Wikipedia. Try proposing compromises rather than violating (repeatedly) Wikipedia's policies and insisting on a positions that fall outside of the same policies. Jimjilin (talk) 19:23, 22 December 2014 (UTC)

You're note making any sense at all Airborne84! Jtrevor99 & FutureTrillionaire & I have expressed dissatisfaction with the unaccompanied Russell quote. There is no consensus. You threaten me with blocking for doing the same thing you are doing! lol Please try to make some sense.Jimjilin (talk) 19:23, 22 December 2014 (UTC)

Fairness and compromise would be better than threatening. Instead of constantly threatening me why not respond to my questions.Jimjilin (talk) 19:31, 22 December 2014 (UTC)

Yes, I responded to you on your talk page. You do not appear to understand Wikipedia's policies on this. I recommend you review the relevant policies I listed on your page. By the way, plagiarizing counts on Wikipedia as well. If you're just going to copy and paste my text on my talk page, you might consider attributing it properly, rather than changing a couple of words and replacing my name with yours at the end. Thanks. Airborne84 (talk) 19:41, 22 December 2014 (UTC)

If Jtrevor99 & FutureTrillionaire & I have expressed dissatisfaction with the unaccompanied Russell quote isn't the consensus broken?Jimjilin (talk) 21:38, 22 December 2014 (UTC)

Not necessarily. Consensus isn't a vote. The reasons are also taken into account. And your reason that Russell's position has been proven "false" by the opinions of others carries little weight at Wikipedia. It would at other POV platforms on the web. And you'd need to identify what issue you are talking about. Are you talking about removing the quote itself? If so, Jtrevor did not state that the Russell's position should be removed; he suggested making it less prominent (a more reasonable position). And FutureTrillionaire asked if it should be removed. If you are talking about the rebuttal, there are at least two other editors (one weighed in and I noted the other one in the archive) who appear to disagree with the rebuttal.
If you want the Russell quote removed or changed, why don't you simply make a new comment thread on the Jesus talk page and make a recommendation about it? That won't get you blocked. It's the right way to go about things. To be honest, I wouldn't object to a paraphrasing of the quote (although it is probably worded as a quote better than we can paraphrase it). If you had suggested that, the change might have been made by now. Instead you decided to:
  • Add a POV rebuttal using Christian views in the "other views" section—in a controversial article
  • Edit war on the rebuttal when other editors disagreed
  • Violate WP:BRD by deleting the Russell passage a second time without establishing a clear consensus for change—in a controversial article
I'll refer to my earlier comments about your editing not being the best way to get things done here. Instead of us discussing this on the talk page and coming to an agreement, even a compromise, you have simply violated Wikipedia's policies. I like to assume good faith, but you simply must know the details of edit warring and WP:POV by now. I can only suggest that you choose compromise and working to achieve a new consensus when appropriate in the future rather than the path you have chosen over the past 2 1/2 years, assuming you do not get blocked indefinitely. Airborne84 (talk) 21:58, 22 December 2014 (UTC)

Again I don't understand your criticism Airborne84. Does your opinion alone carry weight at Wikipedia? Do you decide when a consensus has been reached and when a rebuttal is appropriate? Anyway, I think we've reached a compromise. I don't know why you keep threatening me and attacking me with great blocks of ill-considered prose.Jimjilin (talk) 22:44, 22 December 2014 (UTC)

on the article Moral

Hi! I think you added this: "Moral philosophy includes moral ontology, or the origin of morals, as well as moral epistemology, or what we know about morals" a long time ago to the article. I have commented about this in the article's "talk" section. Instead of me rudely deleting it, perhaps you have a reference or comment on it? Any defense of the sentence will make me leave it be. As it is now, I would be grateful for some clarification. Star Lord - 星王 (talk) 05:22, 11 May 2015 (UTC)

@DanielDemaret, thanks for your note. I'm not attached to the way it is outlined, and it is indeed unsourced. That said, I don't think it's inaccurate—it just might be there there is more to be said. For example, Stanford's Encyclopedia of Philosophy lays out moral epistemology. It includes moral ontology as a subset, but people discuss (and argue about) the origins of morals fairly often.
There's plenty of room for improvement, especially a well-sourced outline of what constitutes morality. Please feel free to make improvements. Best, --Airborne84 (talk) 06:42, 16 May 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Kalām cosmological argument, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Michael Martin. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Tertiary source

Dr. Carrier characterizes the sources in the proposal as showing that the methodology is "proven to be logically invalid across the board". See page 21 of "On the Historicity of Jesus".VictoriaGraysonTalk 02:37, 15 September 2015 (UTC)

Thanks. I recommend posting this at the talk page with other supporting sources. If they do not all say the same thing "invalid", you may need to choose more abstract language to accurately encompass them all, such as what I recommended: "methodological challenges" or the like. --Airborne84 (talk) 16:22, 16 September 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process.
