notability
[edit]Hi! Can you take a look at Said Belcadi and tell me if you think he is notable? It appears the article was previously deleted on arwiki under the name "سعيد بلقاضي" but I can't figure out the reasoning. Praxidicae (talk) 13:06, 9 March 2020 (UTC)

- Thank you for replying guys. I'm not sure if there is any issue with the notability, but sockpupptery and undisclosed paid editing is a concern. We normally nuke pages creaetd by socks on En under G5, but no idea how it works on Tr. GSS 💬 08:04, 20 April 2020 (UTC)
Hello User:علاء, I saw your post on User:Cyberpower678 page who I also work with on archive projects, and thought you might be able to help with arwiki. I am working on another project, the Lua template NUMBEROF and have installed it on about 60 wiki languages. I had some trouble installing on the Arabic language. There are two problems: the قالب:NUMBEROF is pending review and needs someone with permission to accept the change. The second problem is on the doc page قالب:NUMBEROF/شرح, the last line about pywikibot is no longer accurate and should be deleted. It should also have added this template {{lua|Module:NUMBEROF}}
at the top of the page. I think that should be all to complete the install. -- GreenC 13:39, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

Please explain the bot shutdown on arwiki
[edit]After having confirmed arwiki's bugs to be fixed, I restarted it. But I see you shut it down again without warning. Why?—CYBERPOWER (Around) 23:55, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
- Hello Cyberpower678, sorry to say, but the bugs still not fixed, I'll put more details to you late today. Also you can see from the logs that I restarted it on 14 August then shut it down after few minutes. Best --Alaa :)..! 15:23, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
- علاء, AFAIK, the only bugs on arwiki were parameter alias issues causing the bot to duplicate values, and a subsequent bug that prompted the bot to put in an illegal value for url-status. Those are fixed. Is there another bug I'm not aware of? —CYBERPOWER (Around) 22:48, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
Hello Cyberpower678, I'm trying to move arwiki comments as soon as possible, but I'm busy those days, so I stopped the bot to avoid any "block", especially when objections raised about IAB edits, and ofc I'll pass those objections/comments when I've time. But as you asking, so per last comments on :ar:User talk:InternetArchiveBot:
- First, Example:
- Before

So still duplicating the original link? Also, users said that on InternetArchiveBot request not include replacement of "Webarchive" template, and this template exist on 303K articles on arwiki, also this edit shouldn't be alone as it's not an essential task.
- Second, question raised from arwiki bot operators that in arwiki we put
|url-status=dead
, so what|url-status=bot: unknown
mean? (Example; the link works well)
I apologize for the delay in passing these comments to you, and all came out after you ran the bot on 22 August. Thanks on advance --Alaa :)..! 23:39, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
- علاء, I'm investigating the first issue, as for the second, that's the value the bot uses when it can't determine how the user wanted the reference to render. This parameter value suppresses the original URL from being linked at all, unlike url-status=dead. This value is generally used when it converts a standalone archive template, or a bare archive URL to a full cite reference. —CYBERPOWER (Chat) 19:13, 26 August 2020 (UTC)
- علاء, a different, unrelated bug was causing this. This was because the original URL was missing the scheme and a rare bug was causing it to get ignored, thus making the bot thinking the webarchive template was a standalone. This should be fixed in v2.0.6. —CYBERPOWER (Around) 16:58, 27 August 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks Cyberpower678 for your investigations, and when v2.0.6 will be alive? (FYI @جار الله and FShbib:) --Alaa :)..! 19:25, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

- علاء, *sigh* —CYBERPOWER (Around) 18:29, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
- علاء, After a thorough investigation, this is not a bot bug here. This is a human error. The original URL, and the webarchive URL are different. If you look in the path of the URL, you will notice that a slash is missing between uefa and files on the original URL, while it is present in the archive URL. As such the bot considers these to be different sources and are handled appropriately. As such, the Webarchive template was treated as a stray template and was, in turn, converted into a stand alone cite template. It would seem the original link is only broken because it is mistyped in the article. Fixing this will prevent the bot from touching the webarchive template. —CYBERPOWER (Chat) 21:59, 2 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi. During my NPP tour today, I noticed that you had put this article back in the NPP queue and marked it unreviewed? I was curious as to why. As a World Heritage Site, it's pretty much a lock on notability. It does need some more references to cover the uncited material in the article, but the article has existed since 2004. Was there something specific that I should be looking for? Onel5969 TT me 21:29, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
- Hello Onel5969, sorry but I don't know about what you are talking, I only mereged duplicate arwiki items on Wikidata. Also merged ar:محمية الأكاب للحيوانات البرية with ar:محمية أوكابي للحياة البرية. Best --Alaa :)..! 08:32, 19 October 2020 (UTC)
- It's not a big deal, but yesterday Okapi Wildlife Reserve appeared at the beginning of the NPP queue. I mostly work on the oldest articles, so I was curious as to why a 2004 article popped up. If you look at the log page for the article, you see that it lists you as adding it to the queue, then unreviewing it. Based on what you said above, it must have something to do with an automatic function occurring when you did that merge. Regardless, I've never seen it before, so I wanted to make sure I hadn't missed something. Thanks for taking the time to respond. Onel5969 TT me 12:33, 19 October 2020 (UTC)

Correct Arabic translation of Oil soldiers?
[edit]Hi Alaa; I tried to write this on the talk page of ar:جنود الزيت but I struggled with the right-to-left formatting and whatever I tried, my text got broken, so here it is:
Sorry for writing in English, as I don't speak any Arabic. Im interested in this article because it appears to be a translation of English Wikipedia's article, which I translated from the German article, of which I'm also one of the main authors. When I feed this Arabic version to Google Translate, it translates to "This resulted in the death of 74 soldiers and 10:20 civilians". This might be a mistake by Google, but just to be sure: The poisoning was grave and led to irreversible health damage such as paralysis of the legs in several cases, but it wasn't lethal. Maybe you could check the translation? Many thanks! Pinging User:DR Amany Awad as translator and User:علاء as you checked my typo edit :-) Gestumblindi (talk) 19:37, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
Hello Gestumblindi, thanks a lot for your efforts! I am so glad you followed the article and checked the text! Yes, it's a translation from English to Arabic. You are correct about "death" point, and fixed it. Also, I read the whole article and fixed grammars and translation mistakes. I'll ping @دنيا: (Donia) as user:DR Amany Awad is one of her student on Wikipedian Editor Project. Thanks in advance Gestumblindi, and don't hesitate to reach me at any time! Best --Alaa :)..! 20:25, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot! There's still something strange in the Google translation of the Arabic text back into English: Instead of "coolant for machine guns" it says "refrigerant for extrusion machines". This might now be purely a Google Translate error? Gestumblindi (talk) 20:50, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
- Gestumblindi, yes, google translation not that perfect with Arabic, as one word can have wide range meaning, and if you add one diacritic, will change the meaning significantly. About "مبردة" word, can use as "coolant" and "refrigerant", but you can understand the meaning from the context. Google translation can't understand the "context" --Alaa :)..! 21:03, 30 July 2021 (UTC)

- Following an RfC, extended confirmed protection may be used preemptively on certain high-risk templates.
- Following a discussion at the Village Pump, there is consensus to treat discord logs the same as IRC logs. This means that discord logs will be oversighted if posted onwiki.
- DiscussionTools has superseded Enterprisey's reply-link script. Editors may switch using the "Discussion tools" checkbox under Preferences → Beta features.
- A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
- Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
- The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.
- Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.

It looks like you are keeping track of sockpuppets of this editor and I wanted to let you know that they came to my talk page asking for help, under the User:Turkish Man AAS and User:The Turkish Man accounts. Both of them have been blocked but you might want to add them to your 200+ sockpuppet list. Invitation to take part in a survey about medical topics on Wikipedia
[edit]Dear fellow editor,
I am Piotr Konieczny, a sociologist of new media at Hanyang University (and User:Piotrus on Wikipedia). I would like to better understand Wikipedia's volunteers who edit medical topics, many associated with the WikiProject Medicine, and known to create some of the highest quality content on Wikipedia. I hope that the lessons I can learn from you that I will present to the academic audience will benefit both the WikiProject Medicine (improving your understanding of yourself and helping to promote it and attract new volunteers) and the wider world of medical volunteering and academia. Open access copy of the resulting research will be made available at WikiProject's Medicine upon the completion of the project.
All questions are optional. The survey is divided into 4 parts: 1 - Brief description of yourself; 2 - Questions about your volunteering; 3 - Questions about WikiProject Medicine and 4 - Questions about Wikipedia's coverage of medical topics.
Please note that by filling out this questionnaire, you consent to participate in this research. The survey is anonymous and all personal details relevant to your experience will be kept private and will not be transferred to any third party.
I appreciate your support of this research and thank you in advance for taking the time to participate and share your experiences! If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me at my Wikipedia user page or through my email listed on the survey page (or by Wikipedia email this user function).
The survey is accessible through the LINK HERE.

WikiProject Medicine Newsletter - August 2022
[edit]- Issue 18—August 2022
- WikiProject Medicine Newsletter
Back (for now) by popular demand, it's the WP:MED Newsletter! Pardon the 9-month hiatus. This month features a catch-up list of promoted GAs since the last newsletter, and some calls to action for those looking to add to their todo lists. I hope this finds you well. Enjoy.
Since last newsletter (Nov. 1, 2021) |
Thiamine nom. David notMD |
WP:MED News
- Since last newsletter, frightfully few medicine articles have passed through our main content review processes, Good Article and Featured Article. While we can agree there's more to editing than chasing bronze stars and green blobs, it would be nice to see the catalog of "Good" and "Featured" medicine articles growing rather than just aging. If you're interested in taking on a project but would like some light guidance or a helping hand, feel free to post your plans at WT:MED and you may find others willing to join.
- An ongoing effort seeks to review/update our oldest featured articles. Major depressive disorder, Lung cancer, and Schizophrenia are next on the chopping block (so to speak). If you're interested in helping to update any, please post at WT:MED or at those articles' talk pages. If you're new to the FA process, I'd encourage you to enlist the help of someone(s) who has been through the process before, as they can help clarify expectations and save you time.
- Got a minute? Running low on inspiration/motivation and need a simple task? Check out the 247 medicine articles tagged as citing no sources!
News from around the site
- The Reading/Web team has rolled out a new skin called "Vector 2022" that will soon become the default. Opt-in in your Preferences to try it out. As with any visual update, it'll take some getting used to. If you hate it, don't panic; once it becomes default you'll still be able to opt-out in your Preferences.
- The folks who brought us the nifty "Reply" button have now rolled out a "Subscribe" button to be notified of comments in a particular thread. I believe it's turned on for everyone now. Try it on a busy talk page (e.g. WT:MED).
- Voting is open for the community nominees to the WMF Board of Trustees, until September 6th.
Newsletter ideas, comments, and criticisms welcome here.

Administrators' newsletter – October 2022
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2022).
- Following an RfC, consensus was found that if the rationale for a block depends on information that is not available to all administrators, that information should be sent to the Arbitration Committee, a checkuser or an oversighter for action (as applicable, per ArbCom's recent updated guidance) instead of the administrator making the block.
- Following an RfC, consensus has been found that, in the context of politics and science, the reliability of FoxNews.com is unclear and that additional considerations apply to its use.
- Community comment on the revised Universal Code of Conduct enforcement guidelines is requested until 8 October.
- The Articles for creation helper script now automatically recognises administrator accounts which means your name does not need to be listed at WP:AFCP to help out. - Remedy 8.1 of the Muhammad images case will be rescinded 1 November following a motion.

- The second phase of the 2021-22 Discretionary Sanctions Review closes 3 October.
- An administrator's account was recently compromised. Administrators are encouraged to check that their passwords are secure, and reminded that ArbCom reserves the right to not restore adminship in cases of poor account security. You can also use two-factor authentication (2FA) to provide an extra level of security.
- Self-nominations for the electoral commission for the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections open 2 October and close 8 October.
- You are invited to comment on candidates in the 2022 CUOS appointments process.
- An RfC is open to discuss whether to make Vector 2022 the default skin on desktop.
- Tech tip: You can do a fuzzy search of all deleted page titles at Special:Undelete.
