Notes
A • From 1951–58, the point value of a game depended on the teams' frequency of meeting. When teams played each other twice, two points were awarded for a win. When teams met each other four times, one point was awarded for a win. When teams met each other eight times, one half point was awarded for a win. Ties were worth half a win. • From 1959–71, points were not awarded and rankings were determined by win percentage. • Since 1971–72, two points are awarded for a win and one point is awarded for a tie. |
B • In 1960 and 1961, the top four teams qualified for the playoffs. There was one round consisting of a two-game series, and the winner of each series was determined by total goals. The two winning teams are considered WCHA playoff champions and advanced to the NCAA Final Four. • In 1962, the top four teams qualified for the playoffs. There were two single-elimination rounds (including a third place game) to determine the WCHA playoff champion. The champion and runner-up advanced to the NCAA Final Four • From 1963–65, the top four teams qualified for the playoffs. The first round consisted of a two-game series, and the winner of each series was determined by total goals. The two winning teams advanced to the WCHA championship game and the NCAA Final Four. • From 1966–68, all eight teams qualified for the playoffs. There were two single-elimination rounds, and the two winning teams are considered WCHA playoff champions and advanced to the NCAA Final Four. • From 1969–71, the playoff format remained the same, except the games were held at two Regional sites (the home rink of the highest-ranked team in each group). • From 1972–76, the top eight teams qualified for the playoffs. There were two rounds consisting of two-game series, and the winner of each series was determined by total goals. The two winning teams are considered WCHA playoff champions and advanced to the NCAA Final Four. • In 1977, the playoff format remained the same, except a two-game, total goals championship series was added. The winner advanced to the NCAA Final Four, and the runner-up advanced to an NCAA quarterfinal game against the CCHA champion. • From 1978–80, the championship series was dropped. The two second round winners advanced to the NCAA Tournament – the team with the better regular season record to the Final Four, the other to a quarterfinal game. • In 1981, the playoff format remained the same, except the NCAA Tournament was expanded to eight teams and both WCHA qualifiers advanced to quarterfinal series. Other teams were eligible to receive at-large bids. • During Michigan Tech's three CCHA seasons (1981–84), the top eight teams qualified for a three-round, single elimination tournament. The winner advanced to an NCAA Tournament quarterfinal series. Other teams were eligible to receive at-large bids. • In the WCHA from 1982–87, the top eight teams qualified for a three-round tournament consisting of two-game, total goals series. The winner advanced to an NCAA Tournament quarterfinal series. Other teams were eligible to receive at-large bids. |
