The Bishops of Spain Project is a personal effort to translate and bring most of the current (27 August 2023) Roman Catholics bishops of Spain to B-class. The diocesan system in Spain consists of 69 dioceses and 14 ecclesiastical provinces, plus the Military Archbishopric of Spain.[i] Each ecclesiastical province is headed by an archbishop and each diocese by a bishop. There are 16 titular archbishops,[ii] 14 emeritus archbishops, 51 titular bishops, 10 auxiliary bishops, 24 emeritus bishops and 3 emeritus auxiliary bishops, this equals to a gran total of 118 bishops. Of the 118, only 36 had an article (30,5%) at the start of the project, either stubs or of start class, though all the remaining bishops have a corresponding article on the Spanish Wikipedia.
Mission: His Highness Pope Francis is well-known for its progressive views and as so, he as been electing like-minded churchman to high-rank positions. In 2019, he made structural changes to allow greater transparency regarding sexual abuse cases within the Church, and since then he has ordered studies from independent institutes to investigate and report such cases to the world. By translating and improving these articles we are helping in the reimage of the Roman Catholic Church by providing new, complete, accurate and neutral information. Furthermore, non-anglophone topics are often neglected on the English Wikipedia, and foreign clergy are are not an exemption, so the project is also an attempt to close this discrepancy. Besides helping the free encyclopedia, I chose this topic because I wanted to educate myself more about Catholicism, and Spanish bishops specifically so I could practice my Spanish since practically all sources are in this language.
