@Aldnonymous: Thanks for noticing! It's always good to get positive feedback. I will correct you, however, I don't hate paid editors, rather it is paid editing that is hateful. It is tearing down a wonderful structure that has been built up by many volunteers, that provides good information to whoever has access to the internet. If that information is poisoned, and people can't trust us, then the whole structure may collapse.

Your post reminded me of a news story from a couple of decades ago. After the fall of the Soviet Union people started cutting down and selling copper cable from high power electrical transmission systems (nominally still in use). I don't hate those folks who cut down the cable - they were doing what they had to do to survive. I did hate the fact that the transmission systems were being destroyed. It just seemed like there must be a pretty simple enforcement system that would stop the destruction. Everybody likely knew who was buying the cable - these folks could be stopped fairly simply if anybody took the obvious steps. Similarly, most people likely knew who was cutting the cable or where to look to stop folks from cutting more. So the system was messed up, but the parts of the system that led to the destruction of the cable could easily be fixed. The actual folks who cut the cable, in my mind, were less responsible than the authorities who couldn't be bothered to take a few minimal steps. That's my reading in any case.

Pictures

At first I wondered why you'd use the horse sign in the township article, because it's not particularly representative, but now that I see that it has a farm and municipal building picture, I agree with it. It adds some local color and is mildly humorous. As far as the sign, I have just one idea: radioactive elements like technetium, rutherfordium, and dubnium are transition metals, and this church is apparently in the transition Metal Township between the mountains and the southeast...yes, yes, it's lame, but I can't think of any real explanation. Curiosity

Hi Smallbones. I noticed your comments at Jimbotalk and was a little confused - I've racked my brains over recent cases but I can't think of a case where ArbCom have overruled the TOU on undisclosed paid editing (I rather hope we haven't, since I issue blocks for precisely that reason on a fairly regular basis). Please could you point me in the right direction? It may be that our interpretation of an ArbCom decison is different, in which case some clarification may be needed. Please see Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Wifione#Paid_editing which says in part:

"6) The Committee has no mandate to sanction editors for paid editing as it is not prohibited by site policies. The arbitration policy prevents the Committee from creating new policy by fiat."

which just seems silly to me. Having a policy on "undisclosed paid editing" (and it is definitely a policy, see WP:TOU) is definitely a (limited) policy on paid editing, but apparently ArbCom disagrees. Note that any policy we have on anything is "limited" in some way, if only by WP:IAR. I asked ArbCom to reconsider (see here) this dictum (it had no bearing on the case since Wifione did his undisclosed paid editing before the change in the TOU).

The vote was 4 to 6 against removing the principle with the reasoning of the six being IMHO all over the place, ranging from (my reading) "this policy has to be reconfirmed by the community before it becomes policy" to "we could never enforce this policy, so just ignore it." Given the 4-6 split and the IMHO illogical reasoning of the six, I don't think that ArbCom will ever try to say this again, but they did say it once. Dog breed

I stumbled upon the page on Mongrels, and saw the picture of (what I can understand) your own dog. [3] It did peak my interest since it lacked any information on what type of mix it is; google seems rather futile in this particular case since plenty of time has gained naught. I do have to apologize in advance if making this edit in your talk page is not the way I was supposed to do it: new user. But, I just have to know since she(?) is an absolutely magnificent dog.

Recant your accusation of Paid editing immediately

You recently made an accusation of Paid editing on my Talk page, disguised as a polite question. ('May I ask if you are a car thief?' is an example of a polite question with obvious accusatory intent.) Not only does this exhibit a lack of good faith but constitutes a personal attack on me specifically, both of which are contrary to Wikipedia standards of civil behavior.

When I first saw your message on my talk page, I was so unprepared for its intent, that I completely mistook your meaning, and assumed you were making me an offer to do paid editing for you, and took you to task about it as a violation of WP guidelines. However, upon further examination of your recent contributions I learned the truth. You had made a minor edit at Vemma at 06:31 2 Oct 2015. Within the hour, you had made very similar entries (7:07 and 7:31) on the talk pages of two users who had previous edits there, namely, Mathglot (last Vemma edit: 2013), and Amsterdad, in both cases asking "politely"—to be sure—whether we engaged in paid editing. Had it been only a single entry on my Talk page, I could perhaps have imagined some kind of screw-up or mistake on your part, but given that you separately edited two User Talk pages and made similar accusations, I cannot see that it could have been a simple error on your part.

There can be no reason whatever for you to have made an accusation, or even to have posed a question to me however politely on this topic. You and I have never interacted before, to my knowledge. As you are an editor with autopatrolled status, ten years seniority and over 35,000 edits, you must know WP policies and guidelines far better than I do. I am utterly unable to account for your rash behavior.

I condemn your harassment and personal attack on my reputation as a Wikipedia editor in the strongest possible terms. I demand you recant and formally apologize to me on my Talk page immediately with a very clear statement of error on your part, or else be prepared to back up your accusation of Paid editing.

I cannot speak for @Amsterdad:, but I call their attention to this comment.

This is a second request for you to recant and apologize.

Were I the subject of a WP biography, your barely-veiled implication about paid editing in the form of a polite question would have been rapidly reverted due to the policies covering biographies of living persons, in particular, contentious material that is unsourced or poorly sourced, as you offered no source or evidence whatever. I realize this policy doesn't cover editors, but I am nevertheless a living person, and I strenuously object.

Let's not make a big deal out of this—errare humanum est—just admit your mistake and apologize on my Talk page, and we can move on, no hard feelings. Just to be clear what you're apologizing for: I have no hurt feelings; my reputation as an editor has been damaged by an entry on my talk page implying that I may be a paid editor. You made that entry, so you are responsible for the (ongoing) damage. That's what you're recanting and apologizing for.

Advice

Can you take a look at Palace Theatre (Marion, Ohio)? I originally went there to fix an issue with the NRHP infobox (based on the articles with infobox problems tracking category) then fixed some other issues. The article looked pretty good, so I started to look at it to clean it up for GA. In doing so I saw some overlaps with the text and the much referenced Hoffman book (and, d'oh, its pretty obvious now), it turns out the author of the article was the author of the book. I saw it had some COI issues, and maybe even a user name issue with the "Atmospheric theatre" user name and http://www.atmospherictheater.com/, and then, well, see my final comments on the talk page. Since I've put in some work on the article, and made some recommendations as to how to proceed with the original writer, I'm too close to it now to be objective as to how much cutting must be done. Re: Punishment

Neelix made some awful mistakes, he's been punished.

Many people, including myself, strongly disagree. There has been no punishments. Neelix is still free to edit Wikipedia, which is indicative of a lack of punishment. I'm sorry you feel that way. Please consider his standing in the community - he's been shamed - that his real name is well known, and that there have been multiple articles written about him in real newspapers saying what a great Wikipedian he is. This must be a terrible blow to him - of course we can say "it's all his fault". I don't think that dragging his name through more mud will do any good. I don't know him or have any stake in this, but I think we can leave it here. If he comes out defiant and starts attacking others for his problems, that would be another matter, but I don't think that's going to happen. Let me offer a quote that you likely will remember "In this world, hatred has never been defeated by hatred. Only love can overcome hatred. This is an ancient and eternal law." It's been pointed out to me by one very senior editor, admin, sittng Arb, and very close friend in RL, that my answers to your questions may have been too short. I have therefore greatly expanded my answer to your first question and I expect the courstsy that you will read it. The second question however still leaves me deeply offended. One of the problems on Wikipedia for which I have been spearheading a campaign for years to get abolished, is the notion that elections are a free for all for people to make personal attacks with impunity. One of the days, comments like yours will not only cause me to withdraw from an election, but also to retire from Wikipedia completely. 1. You have not included your guide in the [[Category:Wikipedia Arbitration Committee Elections 2015 voter guides]]. I have no opinion about that. But, if you change your mind, I would prefer that you protect this category by a pair of <noinclude>...</noinclude>
2. You are using second level sections, i.e. ==xxx==, in your guide. After transclusion, the TOC looks bad. If you were using third level sections, i.e. ===xxx===, the TOC would look better. I found a document from the Pennsylvania state government that proves that Federal Street School is Andre Jackson School, so I renamed and expanded Andrew Jackson School (Philadelphia). One thing I am doing is focusing on the whole school and not only the building. Of course the architecture gives the notability and there should be info on that, but also having stuff on the catchment area, the school's history and culture, the student body, etc. is important too. Misogyny

No, I won't drop it, not just yet. Some people seem to think that RfA and election time are an opportunity to break every rule of decency in the book, and the community is happy to sit back and let it go with impunity; then you all complain that we don't get enough candidates for special office. Making leading questions to blatantly accuse candidates of misogyny is beyond the pale. In general, this community empathises with women's issues, and I do too, but it has no need to tolerate gratuitous behaviour from supporters of feminine issues and the use of Wikipedia and its elections as a platform for aggressive or any other kind of socio-political platforming - this has already been demonstrated by Arbcom cases. You might wish to take another look at my syntax and the questions I was asked. One user clearly asked me to identify myself as either 1) a crank, 2) a villainous bully, and 3) a pederast. Binary options, what happened.

You asked what happened with binary option regulation. See Talk:Binary_option#UK_regulation_changing, where I just wrote up an explanation with links to reliable source. There was a big loophole in binary option regulation. The EU allows a financial service to be offered cross-border within the EU. Cyprus allows binary options brokers of the bucket shop type (where the counterparty is the broker), such as Banc de Binary, which most financial regulators do not. The UK regulates binary options as gambling. This allowed Banc de Binary to sell binary options in the UK without being regulated by either the UK's Financial Conduct Authority or the UK's Gambling Commission.

To close this loophole, the FCA, the EU financial regulators, and the UK gambling authorities all had to get together and change the rules to make binary options a financial product. That was a big deal, but it's happening. See page 39 of [5] for the official UK government position. Once this is effective, binary options brokers will come under the regulation of the FCA when selling to UK residents. This provides much stronger consumer protection for UK buyers. (In the US, the CFTC and the SEC shut down Banc de Binary's operations. The FCA may do the same.)

This has not yet taken effect. The final rules are supposed to be published on 3 January 2016, to take effect on 3 January 2017. The binary options article probably should be updated early in 2016, when the new rules are out. John Nagle (talk) 20:48, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

Thanks, I was unaware of that case. The way I interpret both that comment and the arbcom case is that Jimmy approves of the removal of comments from his user talk page and the removal of disruptive and unproductive discussion from his talk page. This fits with what I would consider the long term practice for his page.

I do not interpret it as giving you any specific authority to determine if comments should be removed from his talk page. In that light, I think you should tone down your edit summaries, because "Writegeist| not welcomed on this page, take it to arbcom if you disagree" and "Writegeist not welcome on this page" give the impression that these are specific instructions from Jimmy. This comment strongly suggests that you have special arbcom endorsed authority on the page. In that case, removing the material comes with all the weight of a user removing material from their own talk page. It does not give the impression that you are removing disruptive material per the user's request, in which case a consensus that the material is not disruptive could legitimately lead to restoring it. Obviously no such consensus exists here, so I see no need to restore this comment without such a discussion.

I don't want to wade through the whole thing to see if I agree about removing the material. I'm sure you have good judgement based on the arbcom case, and I'm not sure how any more productive discussion can be had on that topic. I just saw the edit summary and was somewhat concerned about the meaning.

I may be incorrect, and Jimbo Wales did intend to delegate his ability to arbitrarily remove any comments from his talk page to you specifically. That is to say, the authority to remove comments regardless of the consensus of other editors that material is disruptive. If that is the case then I think he should post a notice saying that specifically, or at least clarify here. Does this seem reasonable? Prodego ^talk 01:13, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

It is definitely *not* the case that Jimbo needs to specifically approve each deletion or specifically mention each editor who may be removed from the page. In other words, he let's others moderate the page. He did, in this case, make his opinion known enough on the page that I am confident that my judgement about Writegeist's comments will not be overturned by Jimbo. But that is a matter for Jimbo only, no discussion is needed. I also warned Writegeist, and I don't see any reason to back off from that warning. I have no special position on Jimbo's talk page. I've previously removed 2 sets of comments from his page, and both times I was dragged before arbcom, and both times they said that Jimbo has the right to determine his own rules for the page. As a side issue Jimbo said that he agreed with the quality of my moderation. I'll continue to moderate whenever I see something that is beyond the pale. Hello, very nice to meet a new acquaintance on Wiki. No, I don't believe I've seen that painting before, but it IS beautiful. I do enjoy the story of the first Lilith, and many stories from religions and mythos. My name actually comes from this Lilith - I loved the character - combined with my enthusiasm for things English. The way the gents say "ooh, LOVELY!" over various things makes me giggle, so I added that. The double L is due to the popularity of the name online - I had to make it a bit different from the average user. So, there is the unexciting story of my name, but it is kind of you to introduce yourself. I edit when and where I can, as Real Life allows, and it appears we have some similar interests (although the extent of my Russian is limited to a semester's worth), so I expect our paths will cross in the future. Ariconte See WP:UP#OWN "Traditionally Wikipedia offers wide latitude to users to manage their user space as they see fit." ArbCom has made it clear several times that this applies to Jimbo's talk page.

Jimbo says at User:Jimbo Wales "Over 3,000 Wikipedians monitor my user and user talk page via a watchlist, and I trust them to edit and remove errors or attacks." i.e. that others should moderate his talk page.

I've moderated that page about 3-4 times and been dragged to ArbCom about 3 times. Each time they've upheld the right of Jimbo to have others moderate his talk page. And Jimbo has said there that he sees nothing wrong with my moderation. He has specifically said that others need to moderate because some folks are not there to engage in a discussion and that there are trolls who should be removed.

Since Jimbo is involved in most discussions there, I think you can see why it is difficult for him to moderate his page directly himself, and why it is better to have others doing the moderation. Jytdog, as far as I'm concerned Jimbo can do pretty much what he wants on his talk page. I will say that several people now have noted your insult on that page, so do stay away from that (see WP:NPA) and taking a break from the page would be a good idea.

Coretheapple I don't consider anything here to be "outsourcing". I consider Jimbo's talkpage to be an exceptional resource for the entire community, and I do see people who seem to be trying to ruin that. So I am essentially moderating the page for the benefit of the community (IMHO) and even, at least indirectly, for my own benefit so that I can enjoy the page and civil discussion on it. I'm not surprised that more people don't moderate the page, I always get grief when I do it.

Jimbo Wales I agree with Core that you do not always respond to brilliant questions and fine comments (see e.g. [11]). I do understand that now is probably a busy time for you, so you can put it on your reading list :p

Bear versus bull (Biology)

The article I created is the Biological concept of the bear versus the bull, not the Economical concept, it's like the Biological topic of Tiger versus lion. There is the Economical concept of the bear versus the bull, but what I created is the Biological concept, using sources apart from those about Economics, which are useful for the Biological topic of the bear versus the bull, so please do not delete it, it is different to the Economical concept.

For example, these sources show that bears may kill cattle or Bovini-bovinae for food, therefore, come into confrontation with bulls (in this sense, male cattle or Bovini-bovinae).

Interesting. Presumably Reformed Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Synod at one time; it's part of the Presbyterian Church in America, into which the RPCES merged in the 1980s. My denomination's only Philadelphia-area churches are on Lawrence Road, Broomall (just down the road from the Thomas Massey House) and in a residential neighborhood just southeast of Jenkintown in Abington Township, Montgomery County.

Thank you for intervening in the Cheryl Cole (Cheryl Fernandez-Versini) matter. I strongly suspect this article is being plugged by her agents. Cole's whole page reads like a fan website. The trivia there is overwhelming; her misdemeanours are labelled "legal issues", but she narrowly escaped jail and was fined heavily (click here and here) for a violent drunken assault on a black female toilet attendant; she cannot sing properly click here but this is omitted in the page. The page must somehow be reverted to read like an article in an encyclopaedia. I've discovered that one of your pictures of Gettysburg appears in Hallowed Ground: A Walk at Gettysburg (illustrated edition) by James M. McPherson, he of the Pulitzer and Battle Cry of Freedom. A cropped version of File:Gettysburg mon 72nd Penna Inf.JPG appears on p. 169. One of mine, File:90th Penna Infantry Monument Gettysburg PA1.jpg (cropped) appears on p. 81, and one of Carptrash's images File:11th PA Infantry monument.jpg on p.45. The illustrated version was published in 2015. Images are more or less properly credited, one could quibble about compliance with CC-by-SA text requirements. Connection request

I am a Wikipedia Visiting Scholar with the University of Pittsburgh and edit in this capacity as Barbara (WVS). I am helping to insert content from the Library's historical archives. I am not certain why I have not coordinated this effort with you and the GLAM project in the past, but I have my hand raised at this time. I have been asked back for 2016-17 and will continue to work with the University Library System in getting their content into the encyclopedia. I differ from other WVSs in that I actually live in Pittsburgh and I am able to conduct some 'training' this summer for librarians so that they can begin to enter information from their own areas of expertise. I saw your last comment related to ruwiki and not sure if anything can be done about it, except developing content on the subject, such as this page. One should realize that any serious contributor for hire by a large organization will look like a good guy who contributes positively to different subjects, except only a few specific things that are most important for his/her employer. Long time ago I read an interview given by a couple of these guys to Novaya gazeta. They worked on social sites/blogs (not wikis) to promote certain products and discredit products by competitors. They said they were doing two very different types of job. One of them was placing certain (dis)information about the products. The second type of the job was getting rid of undesirable contributors by making their life on a site unbearable. Real fun began when two "teams" hired by different employers began to fight. In such cases they sometimes had to come to an agreement. Interestingly enough, this newspaper itself had to close their blogs for a while (after beginning of the Ukrainian campaign) because of people posting huge number of highly inflammatory comments. Perhaps I should spell it out. Consider someone who was paid to edit on behalf of Monsanto, to provide a certain systematic ideological spin on all articles about history and politics of country X, and so on. Will he declare a conflict of interest? No. Will he be telling obscenities as people on the blog of Novaya Gazeta? Of course not because that will get him blocked. He will do only two things: (a) removing all correct, but unsourced or relatively poorly sourced information and images with disputable copyright that presents his employer (government of country X) in a negative light, (b) placing sourced information and providing images about government X that paints it in a positive light, but their "enemies" in a negative light. Of course this is done by selecting certain biased sources and certain biased information from the sources and therefore goes against WP:NPOV, but you will not be able to distinguish such paid contributor from a dedicated volunteer with ideological POV. His important objective will be proving that he is a good guy; he will even create new pages on wiki written for him by other people. Speaking biological language, this is a parasite who does not kill its host and was not rejected by the immune system. My very best wishes (talk) 13:42, 23 June 2016 (UTC)

PS, you may have noted that the back-of-card text mentioned that the library was donated in memorial of a local resident; I'd searched before for the library's history without finding anything (no information on their website, but they host another copy of this postcard), but a quick Google search for the donor's name found a copy of the newspaper out of Carbondale with the dedication date for the library. The only Unionville on Rt. 82 is Unionville, Chester County, Pennsylvania (map). Can you check your source for the coordinates? Sweet Home Chicago

Yes, I agree with the revert, but I believe it best to keep the caption free of a spot to click to start any video, legal or not, avoiding the title containing the video name and the way you have presented it. I did the same thing about 4 years ago. Though it's legal to show events from the White House & Congress, we don't want new editors to think it's OK to display them that way, since most You Tube videos aren't for sure OK. People pull them, or violate copyright when the artists don't get paid for DVDs and music created for sale since one person decides to upload their copy to You Tube and all the other people get to enjoy their product for free. I wonder if there is a more official video from the White House which isn't on You Tube. The other thing that puzzles me is that every year, the President picks 5-6 people or bands to honor in the arts. They begin with small talk from the first couple, receive their medals, & appearances to honor the chosen ones, and then move to the Kennedy Center for a larger, Kennedy Center Honors series of performances with top people in the arts who perform their material. Every year, a national network (CBS, etc.) broadcast it, and after, sell the Kennedy Center concerts on DVD. Two years ago, that changed. You Tube banned any upload in the past two years of the Kennedy Center Honors (and it's always been difficult to find the White House appearances even on You Tube, like "Sweet Home Chicago", which was played again at the Kennedy Center 4 yrs ago before the new rules. So, that's why I began to revert it, but was so sick I ended in the hospital for a week and couldn't give it any thought. Sorry!
