Films
[edit]Since Indian cinema...
- I'm quite a fan of art films (in India, parallel cinema), the realism of which helps one experience the story and connect with it at the emotional level. Shyam Benegal's films are among the greatest, followed by those made by Govind Nihalani, Mani Ratnam, Aparna Sen, among others. But my all-time favourite is Gulzar hands down! I also quite like Ram Gopal Varma, whose unique style I appreciate, as well as his contribution to the horror/thriller genre, which is greatly underdeveloped in Indian cinema.
- Mainstream Hindi films - Raj Kapoor and Yash Chopra - a unique style and a distinctive voice, in part responsible for the establishment of the inimitable culture of Hindi cinema.
- Hrishikesh Mukherjee - great social middle-of-the-road focusing on middle-class people - a kind of blend of art and mainstream cinema. Filmmakers who made films on middle-class lives with a very similar style and with great success include Basu Chatterjee, whose films I equally enjoy revisiting.
Music
[edit]Basically, I enjoy every possible music genre in good measure. I obviously love Indian music, no matter what it is. Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle are world living legends. Although today Indian music faces a great deal of modernisation and is gradually becoming more westernised, I think it used to be very melodious back in time, and that's the style I personally prefer. Among many muic genres, I like middle-eastern music, Spanish music (particularly those rhythmic latin numbers), soul, rock, hip-hop and blues, fifties-sixties, italo disco etc.
