War is an intense armed conflict between states, governments, or societies which is generally characterized by extreme violence, aggression, destruction, and mortality. The common activities and characteristics of such conflicts, collectively called warfare, are primarily conducted by a military, a heavily armed and highly organized force that is typically officially authorized and maintained by the state or government to defend the society or nation concerned against armed threats from the opposition, using both regular forces (usually divided into multiple branches) and irregular forces to accomplish this mission. A country's armed forces may also involve paramilitary groups such as mercenaries, insurgents, or militias. In some cases, warfare may result in massive civilian or other non-combatant suffering and casualties.
