It was announced in March 2021 that Ed Harris would direct the film from a screenplay he had written. Robert Duvall, Garrett Hedlund, Amy Madigan and Lily Harris were cast to star.[2][3]

Filming began by May 2021, with shooting occurring near Fort Benton, Montana.[4]

When asked about the status of the project in a June 2022 interview with USA Today, Harris confirmed:

In May 2024, the project resumed development now starring Bill Murray, Owen Teague and Nick Nolte, with Duvall and Hedlund no longer part of the cast. Madigan and Lily Harris were still attached to their roles.[6]
