On the evening of 21 April 2023, a strong and deadly tornado struck the Aung Myin Kone and Tada Oo villages, in the Lewe Township, near Naypyidaw, Myanmar. Thunderstorms located over Central Myanmar formed around 4:30 p.m local time, about an hour before the tornado. Eight people were killed and 128 were hospitalized in the aftermath of the storm.[1]
Background
[edit]Minor tornadoes occur often during the summer and before the monsoon in Myanmar.[1] Major tornadoes have also hit the country before. In July 2009, a tornado hit Kyein Chaung Gyi in the Ayeyarwady Delta, destroying over 30 homes.[2] On 6 April 2015, a tornado killed three and injured five more in Phakant, Kachin State.[3]
Impact
[edit]The tornado caused major damage in both villages it impacted. In Tada Oo, 48 people were injured by the storm, 16 of which in critical condition. Two women were killed and 77 homes were destroyed. Damage was more severe in Aung Myin Kone, where 155 homes were destroyed and four were killed. 61 people were also injured. Several powerlines collapsed around the area. Two Buddhist monasteries and a clinic were destroyed and trees were removed of their leaves. Two others died although their location is unknown.[4][5] Videos showed a cone tornado ripping through homes, launching large debris and tearing off roofs.[6]
Aftermath
[edit]Soon after the tornado, Min Aung Hlaing, the chairman of Myanmar, visited the newly declared as a disaster area, proving aid to residents. Thet Paing Soe, leader of a charity organization, said that the process of rebuilding will take months.[5] The people that were injured were transferred to hospitals in Lei Way and the Zabyu Thiri Township. Rescue efforts were carried out in the affected areas by various groups.[4]
