Introduction:

Dr. Pratima Murthy is the Director of NIMHANS.[1], Bengaluru. She is recognized for her extensive contributions to addiction psychiatry and mental health care. Dr. Murthy has over 30 years of professional experience and has been instrumental in the development of advanced mental health services and infrastructure in India.

Early Life and Education:

Dr. Pratima Murthy completed her MBBS from Bangalore Medical College in 1985. She pursued a Diploma in Psychological Medicine (DPM) and MD in Psychological Medicine from NIMHANS in 1987 and 1989, respectively. She joined the faculty at NIMHANS in 1993, marking the beginning of a long and distinguished career in mental health. She is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), Glasgow.

Career:

Dr. Pratima Murthy assumed the position of Director of NIMHANS on 18 June 2021.[2]

She also serves as the Professor and Head of the Department of Psychiatry at the institute. Her major achievements include establishing the Centre for Addiction Medicine at NIMHANS, a state-of-the-art facility for addiction research and treatment. She has been a consultant for international organizations, including the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the International Labour Organisation (ILO), and the World Health Organisation (WHO). She has played a pivotal role in training programs on substance abuse prevention and tobacco cessation, both in India and internationally.

Contributions:

Dr. Murthy is widely regarded for her efforts in improving mental health care standards in India. Her work with the National Human Rights Commission focused on enhancing the quality of care for individuals with mental illness in both institutional and community settings. She is also noted for her leadership in tobacco control, earning recognition for her contributions toward reducing the burden of tobacco use in the country.
