Statement on Bias

[edit]

Whereas I, unfortunately, have taken recently, after a period of inactivity/lurking, to a habit of participating in discussions on the talk pages of protected articles related to current events (and might also edit them in the future), I wished to make this pro-active/explicit statement of my known biases and/but lack of known conflicts of interest:

  • I am an individual with ~left-of-centre values including upholding as a moral good the broader ideals of Human Rights (extending to notions of social justice and minority rights), multi-culturalism, and global cooperation
  • I am an active ideological opponent of Trumpism and all forms of resurgent right wing extremism/authoritarianism and hyper-nationalism, which I think can be fairly characterized as neo-fascism.
I would probably not self-describe as an ideologue of any political or economic philosophy, but I have since graduating college grown generally more skeptical of capitalism and had growing (theoretical more than meaningfully practiced) sympathies with anarcho-collectivism and/or (somewhat incoherently) a mixed planned/market economy prioritizing the guaranteeing of basic needs AND anti-corruption measures / an open society.
  • I am concerned about the use of Wikipedia articles as a tool for the shaping of propaganda narratives and spreading of misinformation
  • I am not a paid nor volunteer operative of any political candidate, PAC, or other ideological-centered organization.
(Disclosure: I am the child of a former state representative elected under the auspices of the Democratic Party; my parent does not have direct influence nor I believe, as a rule, any knowledge of my activities on wikipedia.)
At the time of writing, I am (for an extended period) self-employed and/or unemployed, and if/when that changes, I do not anticipate allowing anyone to direct my activities on Wikipedia.
(and in the vanishingly likely event such a thing were to take place in the future, I would insist upon: confining such activities to a separate account and/or disclosing that information on the user page of any account(s) used for such)
  • I do not co-ordinate my editing or discussion with anyone (though I might mention it casually as a thing going on in my life to a friend)
  • I do make a best effort attempt to WP:AGF, act in good faith, abide by the ideas of WP:NPOV and other norms of the wikipedia community.
Nevertheless, in a discussion, I may be guilty, like a person (and one with ADHD at that) of digging in or becoming defensive of my position or proposal.

Even more unnecessary addendum: whereas such current event related activities are related to Donald Trump, I would clarify: Donald is / has been since birth my legal and commonly used first name. This coincidence may influence my interests, but it did not influence my username (though it might influence a decision to change it to something else in future)
