The 2016–17 Formula E season is the third season of the FIA Formula E world championship.

Rule Changes

  • The fastest lap is only awarded 1 point (in the first two seasons it was worth 2 points).[35]
  • The permitted rate of regeneration has been increased to 150 kW (previously 100 kW).[36]
  • Maximum power output remains limited at 200 kW for season three, but will later be increased to 220 kW in season four and 250 kW in season five.[36]
  • The overall weight of the car has been reduced from 888 kg to 880 kg.[37]
  • The maximum weight of the battery cells has been increased from 200 kg in season two to 230 kg for season three.[37]
  • Michelin provides a new tyre.[35]
  • The front wing has been redesigned, but only with "cosmetic effects".[35]

Calendar Changes

  • In May 2015, it was announced that an ePrix had been confirmed to take place in Montreal[41]
  • In October 2015, it was announced that Hong Kong would also have an ePrix[41]. Hong Kong was provisionally on the calendar for the 2014–15 season, but was later dropped.
  • In February 2016, it was announced that a possible race in New York could happen at the end of season three[42]. This was later confirmed in May[41].
  • It was also announced later in February that an agreement had been made to host an eprix in Brussels, signing a five year deal[41].
  • In March, Mahindra Racing asked fans to come up with a design for a street race around the streets of Delhi, after receiving support from the Indian government to host a race[43]. However, no race in Delhi was on the draft calendar released later in May[41].
  • A draft calendar released in May also confirmed the return of the Monaco ePrix (returning after a year's absence), as well as new races in Singapore and Marrakesh, and the withdrawal of ePrixs in London and Punta del Este[41].
  • The FIA approved the calendar in July, but with some changes from the draft calendar. Apart from some adjustments to the dates, there was also the removal of races in Singapore and in Long Beach, with these the identity of the two replacements for these rounds unknown at the time[38].
