Disney Illusion Island received "mixed or average reviews" from critics, according to the review aggregator platform Metacritic.[1]

The game's accessibility mechanics and options were praised and considered to be a satisfactory introduction to platformers or Metroidvania games.[3][7][14] By deeming Metroidvania as one of the most entertaining and confusing genres, PCMag expressed admiration at the effort towards making the style accessible.[15] Digital Trends called it "a welcoming adventure that fits the Disney ethos"[10] and Shacknews classified it as "Baby's First Metroidvania".[8] Although critics saw the game as relatively easy,[16][10] which Nintendo Life sees as the game's main flaw,[11] Destructoid saw the difficulty "ramp up nicely in the second half"[7] and, according to GameSpot, the game becomes "surprisingly" harder as it demands for careful timing towards the end.[6]

Eurogamer and The Guardian perceived the lack of variety between biomes as making it easier to get lost.[3][9]

David Housen's score for the game earned special praise from Game Informer alongside the visuals, voice acting and gameplay.[18]
