Manual of Style/GLAM (Draft in Progress)
[edit]Some of the content in this list is already on the Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Visual arts page or the Wikipedia:Manual of Style page, but it would be nice to see these sections either be adapted to also suit GLAM, or, the idea that I like best, create a GLAM-specific page that perhaps draws content from other Manual of Style pages. See MOS directory: Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Contents
GLAM Institution Pages
[edit]When the institution has a Wikipedian-in-Residence it is advised that the WiR make changes to the institutional page rather than another member of the staff. When a WiR is not present it is advised that staff limit their edits to the institutional page and focus on edits about items held by the institution.
Department, archive and institutional library sections
[edit]In general, entries on libraries and archives may be added within institution articles, and in some cases, may be the topics of independent articles.
EX:
Using infoboxes and templates
[edit](include/revise entry in Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Visual arts#Using infoboxes and templates and Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Infoboxes
There are dedicated infoboxes for different types of GLAM institution pages.
Information in an infobox contains basic introductory facts from the article. If something is not substantiated in the article, or would involve over-simplification, it should not be included in the infobox.
Info boxes for artists, artworks There are dedicated infoboxes and some templates for Visual arts articles at Wikipedia:WikiProject Visual arts#Templates, in addition to the standard biography Infoboxes and national/cultural templates. There may be a conflict for space between the need to illustrate visual arts articles and the use of infoboxes. This is decided on a case-by-case basis.
Creating categories for your institution and its collections
[edit]Parent categories for articles about institutions may be created. Other types of categories or subcategories relevant to the institution may able be created, such as "(institution's name) collections"
Other Examples
- Category:Video games of the Museum of Modern Art
- Category:Museum of Modern Art-related articles by importance

Adding Content and References for GLAM Materials
[edit]Describing location and ownership of works that are in museums and collections
[edit]The Manual of Style section on Museums and collections is also useful for this topic.
Creating ‘Highlights of the Collection’ sections
[edit]Lists of collection items, labeled "Highlights of the Collection" are acceptable. In general, the 'Highlights' should be a list of popular or often referenced items in the collection.
Lists of Exhibitions on institution page
[edit]Articles about exhibitions
[edit]Exhibition names may be italicized, capitalized, or put in quotes
Exhibition pages may reference the artists that participated and the artists shown.
Exhibition pages may reference the reception and history of the exhibition.
EX:
Citing Museum catalogs and digitized collections
[edit]Wikipedia does not have a single house style though citations within an article should be consistent. Several citation styles exist (APA style, ASA style, MLA style, The Chicago Manual of Style, Author-date referencing, etc.), and any of these styles may be used so long as they are consistent and provide the necessary information.
Wherever possible, you should include internal links to Wikipedia articles in your citation (for authors, book titles, etc). It is not necessary to use online sources, but it is preferable.
Citations must be done as references not external links within the body of the text.
Citing Internal Documents and Museum publications
[edit]Collection catalogs, and exhibition catalogs are considered published sources and are cited throughout Wikipedia. A link to the catalog can be used as a reference or cited in the External Links section of articles.
Uploading images from your institution into Wikimedia Commons
[edit]Please note that uploads to Commons must be freely licensed, or be in the public domain in both the source country and the United States.
For photographs taken in private any identifiable people in them must consent to publication; for some countries and situations this is also true for photographs taken in public.
If the institution plans to upload more than a few images it is advised that a formal release be emailed to the Wikimedia Foundation.
Copy-fraud Wikimedia’s policy is that if the images or other multimedia items are out of copyright then they are legally allowed to be copied and redistributed even if it is the institution’s policy for people to ask permission before use. Claiming rights over reproductions when copyright has expired is referred to by Wikimedians and like-minded people as “copyfraud”: the foundation does not see itself as under any obligation to delete such content. If the original object is still in copyright then you can mark the file for immediate deletion by contacting Wikimedia.

COI concerns for GLAM-Editors
[edit]See: Conflict of interest editing on Wikipedia page.
Be up front about your associations with the institution on talk pages.
Avoid creating new articles about yourself or people within your institution whom which you are close to.
When in doubt, discuss first on the talk page, or make a suggestion rather than an edit
