Michael Deacon of The Telegraph called the novel "magnificent" and praises the Victorian style of the novel and Deacon was unimpressed by the television adapation of the novel[1]. January Magazine reviewer David Abrams compared the novel to if Dickens's wrote pornography. Abrams said Faber's writing would leave "readers speechless with admiration", but felt the book faultered towards the end[2]. The New York Times called the protagonist a "glorious teenage heroine"[3].
