List of largest rough diamonds

For clarity, I have attempted to list as many alternative names for the stones as possible. Since some stones have inadvertently been given the same name by previous authors, this has resulted in the use of duplicate names. For example, the name 'Great White' was applied at one time or another to two stones, which are better-known today as the Jacob and the Shizuka. Where this happened, I have used Roman numerals to distinguish between them, in chronological order; i.e. the Jacob, discovered in 1884, is referenced as "Great White I" and the Shizuka, discovered over a century later, is referenced as "Great White II". However, this convention has already been applied by earlier authors, and there are several famous diamonds named Victoria or Vitória, and two in particular that were known as Vitória I. I have listed these two particularly problematic stones as 'Vitória I-a' and 'Vitória I-b' for clarity.

Cullinan Cullinan (now Great Star of Africa, plus several other named stones) 3106.00 1905 White D South Africa Cullinan mine (formerly known as Premier mine) 530.20ct pear-shape (Cullinan I or Great Star of Africa), estimated probably D colour and probably potentially flawless after repolishing (has some surface scratches due to wear; grading estimated subject to restrictions as the stone was still in its mounting), plus 8 other large stones (ranging from 317.4ct to 4.39ct), and 96 additional smaller stones. The two largest polished stones from the Cullinan - Cullinan I or \'Great Star of Africa\', and Cullinan II or \'Star of Africa\' - are museum exhibits (Crown Jewels, Jewel House, Tower of London, London, UK). Cullinan I is the largest colourless, polished, gem-quality diamond in the world (though it does not have a modern diamond grading report). http://www.petradiamonds.com/im/press_display.php?Id=2010/26feb10http://gia.metapress.com/content/1556jh6467260727/?p=6fb97f65b9104b17b52f64046c0297d3π=3

Red Cross Red Cross 375.00 1901 Pale canary yellow South Africa Kimberley area 205.07ct The name \'Red Cross\' comes partly from the charity which received money from its sale, and partly from a pattern of inclusions forming a cross when viewed from the face-up direction (according to Bruton and Blakey). Such a pattern is known as a \'star cloud\' or \'stress cloud\' in the diamond industry. Other references appear to have assumed that the \'maltese cross\' refers to the pattern of reflections caused by the pavilion facets. GIA Diamond Dictionary, p.241George G. Cœur d\'Afrique Cœur d\'Afrique / Great Heart of Africa (now Grand Cœur d\'Afrique) 278.00 1982 White G Guinea Alluvial diggings near the Droujba kimberlite pipe, Macenta préfecture? 70.03ct G colour internally flawless heart-shape, 25.22ct F colour heart-shape and a 14.25ct marquise. One source refers to a 270 carat stone being discovered in alluvial diggings near the Droujba kimberlite pipe (near Bounoudou). Another refers to a 278ct stone that was discovered \"approximately 645km East of Conakry\" - although travelling East from Conakry for 645km would appear to mean that you would end up in the Ivory Coast! Droujba is, however over 500km due East of Conakry. Since the Cœur d\'Afrique weighed 278ct and it is unlikely that two stones of such similar weights should be discovered in the same country, within about 150km of each other, in the same generation, it is tentatively assumed that the two stones are the same. famous diamonds page 295https://www.diamondintelligence.com/magazine/magazine.aspx?id=9091http://www.diamonds.net/news/NewsItem.aspx?ArticleID=33399

Although the rough weight of the Du Toit is not known, the fact that it is the second-largest suggests that this list is incomplete, since to make a 244ct polished stone the Du Toit must almost certainly have weighed considerably more than the well-publicised Stewart and the Tiffany. Star of Yakutia Звезда Якутии / Zvezda Yakutia / Star of Yakutia (not 50 лет Аэрофлоту / 50 Years of Aeroflot) 232.05 09.08.1973 Russia Mirny diamond fields, Yakutia The name 50 лет Аэрофлоту (50 Years of Aeroflot) has been applied to this stone by some sources; it\'s also been suggested that two stones with identical weights but different names were discovered in the same year. According to Russian sources, however, the full story is as follows: the stone was provisionally named \'50 Years of Aeroflot\' when the Premier, Alexey Nikolayevich Kosygin, was on holiday. Upon his return, he rejected the proposed name and called it the \'Star of Yakutia\'. A different stone of 65.6ct, found a couple of months later, was subsequently given the name \'50 Years of Aeroflot\'. However, the provisional name for the 232ct stone had already made it into certain texts. http://www.alrosa.ru/diamonds/named/ http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=ru&u=http://www.alrosa.ru/diamonds/named/&ei=GIarS8G9Ftq5jAeizcXHDw&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CBEQ7gEwAg&prev=/search%3Fq%3D%25C2%25AB50%2B%25D0%25BB%25D0%25B5%25D1%2582%2B%25D0%2590%25D1%258D%25D1%2580%25D0%25BE%25D1%2584%25D0%25BB%25D0%25BE%25D1%2582%25D1%2583%25C2%25BB%2B%25C2%25AB%25D0%2597%25D0%25B2%25D0%25B5%25D0%25B7%25D0%25B4%25D0%25B0%2B%25D0%25AF%25D0%25BA%25D1%2583%25D1%2582%25D0%25B8%25D0%25B8%25C2%25BB%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft:en-UShttp://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=ru&u=http://www.business-key.com/object/17834/&ei=GIarS8G9Ftq5jAeizcXHDw&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CBYQ7gEwAw&prev=/search%3Fq%3D%25C2%25AB50%2B%25D0%25BB%25D0%25B5%25D1%2582%2B%25D0%2590%25D1%258D%25D1%2580%25D0%25BE%25D1%2584%25D0%25BB%25D0%25BE%25D1%2582%25D1%2583%25C2%25BB%2B%25C2%25AB%25D0%2597%25D0%25B2%25D0%25B5%25D0%25B7%25D0%25B4%25D0%25B0%2B%25D0%25AF%25D0%25BA%25D1%2583%25D1%2582%25D0%25B8%25D0%25B8%25C2%25BB%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft:en-USGIA Diamond Dictionary, p.104 & 277http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=QxkdL7JJYp0C&pg=PR29&lpg=PR29&dq=fineberg-jones-diamond&source=bl&ots=IVMZiVzWY3&sig=nI87syjvp28STG52RYfh-mrFBl4&hl=en&ei=y6e9S9CLLqD00gSBwvmlCQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CAgQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q&f=falsehttp://www.almazzoloto.com/archive/?mid=47&id=417

Premier stone 1924 Premier stone 1924 over 200 1924 South Africa Cullinan mine (formerly known as Premier mine) It is likely that the following list of stones from the Cullinan/Premier mine includes some entries which are duplicates of stones listed above. Stones which were known to be from the Cullinan mine and which had a known year of discovery have already been de-duplicated and are listed above with a note in the name (e.g. \'Taylor-Burton / Premier stone 1966a\'). If more than one stone was discovered in the Premier mine that year, the first stone was arbitrarily chosen to be the de-duplicated one. Additional comments and suggestions are shown where appropriate. http://www.petradiamonds.com/im/files/p/cullinan_media_visit_22jan09.pdf
