The Federation of India was a proposed state on the Indian subcontinent, made up of British India and Indian princely states.
The proposal was designed by the Conservative Party of the United Kingdom to win the support of Indian Muslims, moderate Indian nationalists and Indian princes, while preventing the Indian National Congress from gaining a significant or absolute majority in the Indian legislature. This was to retain British control of India's military, economy and foreign relations for another generation, as it eventually became a nominal dominion in the British Empire. It was provided for by the in the Government of India Act 1935, and would have been established if at least half of the princely states agreed to accede to the federation. This had not happened before the Second World War, after the outbreak of which the establishment of the federation was indefinitely postponed.
