Toronto Maple Leafs (2020–2023)
[edit]On October 9, 2020, the Toronto Maple Leafs signed Simmonds to a one-year, $1.5 million contract.[3] Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas had wanted to improve the physicality of his lineup, and Simmonds promised to bring "functional toughness" to his new team.[4] Simmonds opened the 2020–21 season on the Leafs' fourth line,[5] but injuries and his own offensive performance pushed him up to the second line by early February.[6]
