Thoughts and input

[edit]

Please post any thoughts or ideas on the video game industry footer here.

I like the more colorful one, even with the white borders around the names. Just a little more delineation than the less colorful one. Interested to see where this goes, nice work. --Syrthiss 15:11, 23 September 2005 (UTC)

I appreciate both the colorful "but imperfect" footer, and the last one, for it being the lowest of them all. Grumpy Troll (talk) 16:59, 23 September 2005 (UTC).

I guess I like the monotone one, but I think it's larger than it needs to be. I made a compacted version and added it to the bottom. It is small enough that it *might* be possible to position elsewhere instead of just being a footer. Might be even better to move it to the right side of the page to reduce white space at the bottom of articles. Play around with it. Tell me what you think. K1Bond007 19:06, 23 September 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for all the input (so far). I like the compact one. I think the biggest change I'd make would be to make it more horizontal. I'd line up all the sections in one row, though they have a different number of entries, so it'd be a bit jagged. I'd also add a little color (hey, I like color). I also like the addition of the list of video games at the bottom. I'll play around with it a bit when I get a chance.
I think I'd like to keep it a footer. I've run across too many "right side of the page" templates which screw up layout. Footers never seem to do that. Just MHO... Frecklefoot | Talk 21:39, 23 September 2005 (UTC)
Added a second horizontal version. I honestly like grey. It's more appealing and it's easy to read. I don't know why everyone wants to go with purple all the time. Whatever, I chose a kind of blue-green "for color". K1Bond007 22:22, 23 September 2005 (UTC)
It looks like you and I were editing it at the same time, K1Bond007.  :-) Mine looks almost the same as your V2, but has a different color (I think it is kinda blue-ish, not purple) and I put the short lists to each side as sort of bookends to balance it out. I think it is near perfect now (the Horizontal Colorful Compact one, based on K1Bond007's compact one), but I'm still open to comments. Anymore suggestions, comments? Frecklefoot | Talk 23:28, 23 September 2005 (UTC)
Still looks like purple to me. The green-blue type looks more appealing, IMHO. But whatever. The placement of the columns doesn't really matter to me either, but admittingly yours does look more appealing in that respect. I thought of doing it with the big cols on the outside, but it was too much copy and paste work :). K1Bond007 01:22, 24 September 2005 (UTC)

Horizontal Compact

[edit]

It looks like CyberSkull developed a horizontal one too, and asked for feedback (on the page itself, instead of here). Personally, I still prefer the "Horizontal Colorful Compact" one, based on K1Bond007's work. But that is just MHO. Why? I don't want to nitpick, but there are several reasons:

  1. The title isn't encased in anything. It's just hanging there.
  2. The List of video games is included under "Types of video games," which a list isn't.
  3. There is an extra space at the bottom that doesn't serve any purpose.

I think the bullets are fine, but serve a whole lot of purpose except making the box longer (which is fine). Of course, all of these could be fixed. But if they were, we'd just be back at the "Horizontal Colorful Compact" one, so what's the point? Of course, this is all just MHO. Peace. :-) Frecklefoot | Talk 18:15, 24 September 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, I pretty much agree. Regardless of color, the first horizontal design still looks better IMO. I really don't like the floating text on v2 and the bullets really don't serve much of a purpose. K1Bond007 19:38, 24 September 2005 (UTC)
I'm not that good with the CSS margin element, so any help you could provide on that would be appreciated. As for the text on the top, I'm using the <caption> feature of the table, I personally think that in many tables it looks better than having a big header row. I don't mind unbulliting them. Comments from the Computer and Video game WikiProject Talk page

[edit]
I like Monotone, though could the blank lines be half height somehow to make it more compact? This may be Pandora's box, but adding the History of computer and video games and Genres would be good, too. Cool idea as part of the overall get-organized effort. Coll7 01:53, 24 September 2005 (UTC)
I think Horizontal Colorful Compact has the best layout, but I don't like the colors. I made a modified version here. I'll also add it to your page if you don't mind. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 07:47, 24 September 2005 (UTC)
Very nice, Frecklefoot! I like the compact layout with CyberSkulls mods. Are you thinking of putting articles like Game play and Computer game genres on a different footer for "Consumers" or something? -- Sitearm | Talk 13:58, 24 September 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for all the feedback! To answer one question, see my feedback on User:CyberSkull's version above. I still like the "Horizontal Colorful Compact" one best, though I wouldn't be opposed to adding bullets like his has. No, I wasn't thinking about making footers for the other articles that you stated (at least not right now), but that shouldn't stop anyone else from creating them. I created this one because I saw a real need—people browsing in some of these articles might find the other articles interesting, but just don't know where to look.

Anyway, I hope to wrap this up soon so I can start adding it to articles. Actually, I guess I could do that before we finalize it and just make changes to the template itself (and it will automagically show the changed version in the articles). I'll post a notice when I post it and we can continue modifications there.

Any more comments? Frecklefoot | Talk 19:14, 24 September 2005 (UTC)

Are you thinking of putting articles like Game play and Computer game genres on a different footer for "Consumers" or something? And how many articles are you going to put it on? Several hundred? -- Sitearm | Talk 21:10, 24 September 2005 (UTC)

I was just planning on adding it to the articles that are listed in the footer. I don't know what you mean by "Consumers." Frecklefoot | Talk 02:29, 25 September 2005 (UTC)

Ahh... The footer said "industry" which I assumed meant the development and design side of gaming. By contrast I said "consumer" to cover things like game play and game articles. But the footer is not for these? I missed something reading your original specification about the scope of the footer... sorry.
But there is still the Computer game genres article... would that go in this industry footer or is it also not in the scope? -- Sitearm | Talk 02:37, 25 September 2005 (UTC)

I guess it could go in there. I don't know. Hmm... What does everyone else think? Frecklefoot | Talk 22:09, 25 September 2005 (UTC)

I checked and there's a whole separate genre footer, so no need. game "Industry" footer on game industry articles, game "Genre" footer on game genre articles. -- Sitearm | Talk 00:32, 26 September 2005 (UTC)
