The State of Mecklenburg (German: Land Mecklenburg) was a subdivision of Nazi Germany from 1934 to 1945. In was formed after the Nazi Party's rise to power by merging the free states of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Strelitz. The state was effectively under control of Reichsstatthalter Friedrich Hildebrandt who was also Gauleiter of the territorial congruent Gau Mecklenburg. It lost the exclaves of Mecklenburg-Strelitz to the Prussian Province of Schleswig-Holstein as result of the Greater Hamburg Act in 1937. In return, it received some surrounding municipalities of the Free City of Lübeck but lost the former exclaves of Mecklenburg-Schwerin Rossow and Schonberg to the Prussian Province of Brandenburg. With the end of the second World War it became under Soviet control who reconstructed the state as part of their occupation zone.
