At 16:30 GMT on December 15, 2004 I sent the following email to mdoege@compuserve.com:
- Hi.
- Sorry to disturb you in this way, but I am trying to determine the provenance of some photographs which have been uploaded onto Wikipedia. The images in question are:
- The photographs were uploaded by a user called Morn, with comments like 'By mdoege@compuserve.com'. Most, if not all, were uploaded in 2003 or possibly earlier.
- The issue with them is that they are not tagged with any licence information and it is not clear if you are the same person as Morn.
- If you did upload these images, then if you could confirm this, I will mark them with the standard {{GFDL}} tag which applies by default to images uploaded by their authors.
- If you didn't upload these images, but recognise them as your work, please tell me what you would like doing with them.
Here is the reply:
- Hi Chris!
- Yes, those are my images. I am also still active on Wikipedia, but I only log in when I have to, such as for uploading images. Which is why I put the email address there so people can contact me.
- So please go ahead and tag the images as GFDL. I haven't uploaded anything to the English-language Wikipedia for some time as you have correctly observed, but wouldn't it be nice to have a drop-down menu on the upload page where one can select the appropriate licence, perhaps defaulting to GFDL? Then it would be impossible to forget specifying the licence, which is what happened in my case...
- Yours, Martin
So I shall go ahead and do that.
