I plan to make watching other people's contributions easier by developing a user script for that. A development version is available, and can be tested by including the following in your monobook.js:

Then go the "User Scripts" tab in your preferences, select the "Contact list" checkbox, and save.

A portlet should appear on the left hand side. Use the "Edit" link to add contacts.

The functionality is somewhat similar to User:Tra's User watchlist, but will definitely work in Gecko browsers, and perhaps in IE. Recent edits are intended to be displayed constantly, as you browse Wikipedia, in a small left-hand-navigation box.
