Opinions or Reviews about Spellbound
[edit]- Barbara Wallraf of The Wall Street Journal, and author of three books on language, is skeptical about Essinger's 'innocently through-rose-colored-glasses' way of looking at the 'quirks' of the English language in Spellbound'. She expresses the view that Essinger is wrong to dismiss the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) as 'absolutely horrendous', maintaining it is a viable way to reform spelling. She also does not share Essinger's delight in the 'quirks' of spelling, saying "Spelling is the main thing holding our language back from becoming a true global lingua franca."[1]
