Description

The African buffalo is a large cattle-like bovine characterised by its stocky body with strong legs and hoofs. It has a head–body length of around 170 to 265 cm (67 to 104 in) and a height of 106 to 165 cm (42 to 65 in). Male Cape buffaloes typically weigh 700 kg (1,500 lb) and females 550 kg (1,210 lb). Forest buffaloes are smaller, weighing around 250 to 320 kg (550 to 710 lb). The tail measures 50 to 80 cm (20 to 31 in) in both subspecies.
