Harry Welter was born April 24, 1937,He served as Saint Michael mayor from 1987 to 1991. Before that, he was on the city council for ten years between 1977 and 1987. He was also a member of the fire department for 23 years and a Lions Club member for close to 50 years.[2] Harry Welter was struck in his driveway by the sheriff's squad on December 23, 2021
Death
[edit]At about 7 p.m. on Dec. 23, 2021 a Saint Michael deputy was responding to an "unknown" medical call on the 400 block of Main Street North in St. Michael when he hit Welter. According to the sheriff's office's update, the deputy arrived and "did not see the victim on the ground in the unlit driveway," adding the deputy pulled in and "made contact with the victim at slow speed causing injury.[3]
A police report identifies Harry Welter as the man who was struck in his driveway by the sheriff's squad shortly before 8 p.m. Welter was collecting a garbage can from his driveway when he was hit.[4] The exact circumstances of the crash remain unknown.
The State Patrol report said road conditions as snowy and icy at the time of the crash. The involved deputy was wearing a seatbelt and was unharmed. No alcohol was involved.[5]
Investigation
[edit]The crash is under investigation by Minnesota State Patrol upon request by the sheriff's office. The state patrol will be leading the investigation on the request of the Wright County Sheriff's Office. The deputy involved has been with the sheriff's office since September 2020 and was put on paid administrative leave
